Utility Applications of Smart Online Energy Systems: A case for Investing in Online Power Electronics
The backbone of any power grid, the transmission and sub-transmission networks, should be flexible, robust, resilient and self-healing to cope with wide types of network adverse conditions and operations. Power electronic applications are making a major impact on the present and future state of power systems generation, transmission and distribution. These applications include FACTS (Flexible Alternating Current Transmission), HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) in transmission and Custom Power devices in distribution. FACTS devices are some of the advanced assets that network planners can use to make the transmission grid become more flexible and robust. Many established research ideas to advance operations of these devices have been published in the open literature over the last ten years. The most recent publications in this field are reviewed in this thesis. A critical analysis of literature and existing conditions reveals a range of potentials that are ideal for development in Qatar’s increasingly strained electricity network. As a result of demand surge in Qatar in recent years and the forecast to grow in the same rate, the need for improvement in Qatar Power Transmission System (QPTS) is great and significant. Conventional planning and operational solutions such as conductor up-rating, and fixed series capacitors (FSC) are considered. However there are growing challenges on getting new rights of ways for new overhead lines and even corridors for new cables. Advanced FACTS devices are considered for dynamic control of power flows and voltages, such as TCSC (Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor) and GUPFC (Generalized, Unified Power Flow Controller). The research in this thesis examines the potential for QPTS to improve and develop, with emphasis on increased output through integrated online energy systems, online FACTS and HVDC controllers based on synchrophasor measurements. The devices are modelled in Siemens PTI’s PSS®E software, through steady-state mode case study to investigate power flow control and voltage support. Comparison between similar FACTS technologies, such as SVC and STATCOM, is also presented. The improvement in power flow imbalance between transmission lines with different ratings and lengths is studied. The FACTS devices are tested for voltage support to enhance the network voltage profile and hence increase security and reliability to important industrial customers. Optimization techniques of the FACTS devices allocation and rating are generally discussed considering the voltage improvement and optimal power flow control. The results achieved showing the network improvement with using the FACTS are presented in the case studies. In a separate case study, applying medium voltage custom power devices to convert DC battery storage and photovoltaic energy into AC energy using a power conversion system is discussed. The dynamic mode of the STATCOM is modelled in QPTS in the succeeding case study using the same software and compared with the capacitor banks. This is followed by another case of HVDC analysis modelled with and without STATCOM present. The thesis discussed the real time operation and control of power system physical parameters in QPTS using capacitors, FACTS and HVDC. The key contribution of this thesis is the application and resting of all sorts of FACTS and HVDC in QPTS. The system wide area, coordinated control of FACTS (Online Power Electronics-OPE) is a new concept. Another major contribution is being able to look at a system wide approach for a transmission smart grid application. The results of thesis are presented in international conferences in USA, Hong Kong, France, Portugal, and locally in the Arabian Gulf (Dubai, Oman and Qatar). The thesis’s papers are listed in the ‘References’ section and in Appendix-F
A new supervisory energy managmement control strategy of a modified D-STATCOM configuration and dual DC source in distribution grids.
A microgrid is a state-of-the-art, next generation of electric distribution grid that provides a fundamental paradigm shift from passive grid networks to active networks. Power electronic technologies play a vital role in enabling microgrids to meet their system level requirements of power quality, reliability and demand response capability. A conventional distribution static compensator (D-STATCOM) is a power electronic converter which acts as a reactive power compensator and voltage controller at the point of common coupling in a grid system. However, these devices have limited ability to mitigate voltage fluctuations caused by active power disturbances. By integrating energy storage into the DC link of a D-STATCOM, controllable active power from the storage device can result in enhanced voltage compensating capability. The active and reactive power control between the D-STATCOM and AC power point is achieved
by suitable tuning of the phase and magnitude of the output voltage of the D-STATCOM’s converter.
Recent advances and innovations in energy storage systems such as super-capacitors and batteries allow the combination of battery-supercapacitor hybrid energy storage systems to act as an effective solution for energy management in smart grid operation. However, the concept and control of the hybridisation of energy storage are relatively new, and there are great challenges to the development of control management systems, for example, reduce battery current stresses.
This study presents a novel approach in applying a fuzzy-PI controller to a D-STATCOM based energy storage unit to provide enhanced power quality and voltage stability in distribution grids. Full information is provided concerning the implementation of the system, and the dynamic controls devised during the research programme. A second novel approach is the use of sugeno fuzzy logic controller based
decision making for power management of the D-STATCOM based HESS to achieve a robust and superior performance for voltage regulation. Recent developments in this field have tended to converge on intelligent control as the best approach to achieve an effective strategy for power sharing with HESSs by using a high-power storage unit (supercapacitor) and high energy storage unit (battery) in combination with the D-STATCOM to avoid the drawbacks of a single storage unit. This development is considered one of the main ways to upgrade energy storage technology, with gains of faster voltage regulation and decreased battery current peak value.
Verification of the control designs has been achieved through simulation using MATLAB/SIMULINK based on the derived analytical model in state-space form. Comprehensive simulation results show that the proposed fuzzy controller demonstrates significant improvements over conventional controllers in supporting voltage stability in distribution networksPhD in Energy and Powe
Optimised design of isolated industrial power systems and system harmonics
This work has focused on understanding the nature and impact of non-linear loads on isolated industrial power systems. The work was carried out over a period of 8 years on various industrial power systems: off-shore oil and gas facilities including an FPSO, a wellhead platform, gas production platforms, a mineral processing plant and an LNG plant. The observations regarding non-linear loads and electrical engineering work carried out on these facilities were incorporated into the report.A significant literature describing non-linear loads and system harmonics on industrial power systems was collected and reviewed. The literature was classified into five categories: industrial plants and system harmonics, non-linear loads as the source of current harmonics, practical issues with system harmonics, harmonic mitigation strategies and harmonic measurements.Off-shore oil and gas production facilities consist of a small compact power system. The power system incorporates either its own power generation or is supplied via subsea cable from a remote node. Voltage selection analysis and voltage drop calculation using commercially available power system analysis software are appropriate tools to analyse these systems. Non-linear loads comprise DC rectifiers, variable speed drives, UPS systems and thyristor controlled process heaters. All nonlinear loads produce characteristic and non-characteristic harmonics, while thyristor controlled process heaters generate inter-harmonics. Due to remote location, harmonic survey is not a common design practice. Harmonic current measurements during factory acceptance tests do not provide reliable information for accurate power system analysis.A typical mineral processing plant, located in a remote area includes its own power station. The power generation capacity of those systems is an order of magnitude higher than the power generation of a typical off-shore production facility. Those systems comprise large non-linear loads generating current and voltage interharmonics. Harmonic measurements and harmonic survey will provide a full picture of system harmonics on mineral processing plants which is the only practical way to determine system harmonics. Harmonic measurements on gearless mill drive at the factory are not possible as the GMD is assembled for the first time on site.LNG plants comprise large non-linear loads driving gas compressor, however those loads produce integer harmonics. Design by analysis process is an alternative to the current design process based on load lists. Harmonic measurements and harmonic survey provide a reliable method for determining power system harmonics in an industrial power system
