    Land Cover/Land Use Mapping Using Soft Computing Techniques with Optimized Features

    The chapter discusses soft computing techniques for solving complex computational tasks. It highlights some of the soft computing techniques like fuzzy logic, genetic algorithm, artificial neural network, and machine learning. The classification of the remotely sensed images is always a tedious task. So, here we explain how these soft computing techniques could be used for image classification. Image classification mainly concentrates on the feature’s extraction process. The features extracted in an efficient manner improve classification accuracy. Hence, the different kinds of features and different methods for these extractions are explained. The best extracted features are selected using genetic algorithm. Various algorithms are shown and comparisons are made. Finally, the results are verified using a hypothetical case study

    Off-line handwritten signature recognition by wavelet entropy and neural network

    Handwritten signatures are widely utilized as a form of personal recognition. However, they have the unfortunate shortcoming of being easily abused by those who would fake the identification or intent of an individual which might be very harmful. Therefore, the need for an automatic signature recognition system is crucial. In this paper, a signature recognition approach based on a probabilistic neural network (PNN) and wavelet transform average framing entropy (AFE) is proposed. The system was tested with a wavelet packet (WP) entropy denoted as a WP entropy neural network system (WPENN) and with a discrete wavelet transform (DWT) entropy denoted as a DWT entropy neural network system (DWENN). Our investigation was conducted over several wavelet families and different entropy types. Identification tasks, as well as verification tasks, were investigated for a comprehensive signature system study. Several other methods used in the literature were considered for comparison. Two databases were used for algorithm testing. The best recognition rate result was achieved by WPENN whereby the threshold entropy reached 92%

    Investigation of complex modulus of base and EVA modified bitumen with Adaptive-Network-Based Fuzzy Inference System

    This study aims to model the complex modulus of base and ethylene-vinyl-acetate (EVA) modified bitumen by using Adaptive-Network-Based Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS). The complex modulus of base and EVA polymer modified bitumen (PMB) samples were determined using dynamic shear rheometer (DSR). PMB samples have been produced by mixing a 50/70 penetration grade base bitumen with EVA copolymer at five different polymer contents. In ANFIS modeling, the bitumen temperature, frequency and EVA content are the parameters for the input layer and the complex modulus is the parameter for the output layer. The hybrid learning algorithm related to the ANFIS has been used in this study. The variants of the algorithm used in the study are two input membership functions and three input membership functions for each of the all inputs. The input membership functions are triangular, gbell, gauss2, and gauss. The results showed that EVA polymer modified bitumens display reduced temperature susceptibility than base bitumens. In the light of analysis the Adaptive-Network-Based Fuzzy Inference System and statistical methods can be used for modeling the complex modulus of bitumen under varying temperature and frequency. The analysis indicated that the training accuracy is improved by decreasing the number of input membership functions and the utilization of the two gauss input membership functions appeared to be most optimal topology. Besides, it is realized that the predicted complex modulus is closely related with the measured (actual) complex modulus

The medical image classification systems available today classify medical images based on modality, body part, disease or orientation. Recent work in this direction seek to use the semantics of medical data to achieve better classification. However, representation of semantics is a challenging task and sparse representation has been explored in this thesis for this task

    Mining of nutritional ingredients in food for disease analysis

    Suitable nutritional diets have been widely recognized as important measures to prevent and control non-communicable diseases (NCDs). However, there is little research on nutritional ingredients in food now, which are beneficial to the rehabilitation of NCDs. In this paper, we profoundly analyzed the relationship between nutritional ingredients and diseases by using data mining methods. First, more than 7,000 diseases were obtained and we collected the recommended food and taboo food for each disease. Then, referring to the China Food Nutrition, we used noise-intensity and information entropy to find out which nutritional ingredients can exert positive effects on diseases. Finally, we proposed an improved algorithm named CVNDA_Red based on rough sets to select the corresponding core ingredients from the positive nutritional ingredients. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to discuss the relationship between nutritional ingredients in food and diseases through data mining based on rough set theory in China. The experiments on real-life data show that our method based on data mining improves the performance compared with the traditional statistical approach, with the precision of 1.682. Additionally, for some common diseases such as Diabetes, Hypertension and Heart disease, our work is able to identify correctly the first two or three nutritional ingredients in food that can benefit the rehabilitation of those diseases. These experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of applying data mining in selecting of nutritional ingredients in food for disease analysis

    3D texture analysis in renal cell carcinoma tissue image grading

    One of the most significant processes in cancer cell and tissue image analysis is the efficient extraction of features for grading purposes. This research applied two types of three-dimensional texture analysis methods to the extraction of feature values from renal cell carcinoma tissue images, and then evaluated the validity of the methods statistically through grade classification. First, we used a confocal laser scanning microscope to obtain image slices of four grades of renal cell carcinoma, which were then reconstructed into 3D volumes. Next, we extracted quantitative values using a 3D gray level cooccurrence matrix (GLCM) and a 3D wavelet based on two types of basis functions. To evaluate their validity, we predefined 6 different statistical classifiers and applied these to the extracted feature sets. In the grade classification results, 3D Haar wavelet texture features combined with principal component analysis showed the best discrimination results. Classification using 3D wavelet texture features was significantly better than 3D GLCM, suggesting that the former has potential for use in a computer-based grading system.ope
