A comparative study on global wavelet and polynomial models for nonlinear regime-switching systems
A comparative study of wavelet and polynomial models for non-linear Regime-Switching (RS) systems is carried out. RS systems, considered in this study, are a class of severely non-linear systems, which exhibit abrupt changes or dramatic breaks in behaviour, due to RS caused by associated events. Both wavelet and polynomial models are used to describe discontinuous dynamical systems, where it is assumed that no a priori information about the inherent model structure and the relative regime switches of the underlying dynamics is known, but only observed input-output data are available. An Orthogonal Least Squares (OLS) algorithm interfered with by an Error Reduction Ratio (ERR) index and regularised by an Approximate Minimum Description Length (AMDL) criterion, is used to construct parsimonious wavelet and polynomial models. The performance of the resultant wavelet models is compared with that of the relative polynomial models, by inspecting the predictive capability of the associated representations. It is shown from numerical results that wavelet models are superior to polynomial models, in respect of generalisation properties, for describing severely non-linear RS systems
Applications of recurrent neural networks in batch reactors. Part I: NARMA modelling of the dynamic behaviour of the heat transfer fluid
This paper is focused on the development of nonlinear models, using artificial neural networks, able to provide appropriate predictions when acting as process simulators. The dynamic behaviour of the heat transfer fluid temperature in a jacketed chemical reactor has been selected as a case study. Different structures of NARMA (Non-linear ARMA) models have been studied. The experimental results have allowed to carry out a comparison between the different neural approaches and a first-principles model. The best neural results are obtained using a parallel model structure based on a recurrent neural network architecture, which guarantees better dynamic approximations than currently employed neural models. The results suggest that parallel models built up with recurrent networks can be seen as an alternative to phenomenological models for simulating the dynamic behaviour of the heating/cooling circuits which change from batch installation to installation.Publicad
Chemical and biological reactions of solidification of peat using ordinary portland cement (OPC) and coal ashes
Construction over peat area have often posed a challenge to geotechnical engineers.
After decades of study on peat stabilisation techniques, there are still no absolute
formulation or guideline that have been established to handle this issue. Some
researchers have proposed solidification of peat but a few researchers have also
discovered that solidified peat seemed to decrease its strength after a certain period of
time. Therefore, understanding the chemical and biological reaction behind the peat
solidification is vital to understand the limitation of this treatment technique. In this
study, all three types of peat; fabric, hemic and sapric were mixed using Mixing 1 and
Mixing 2 formulation which consisted of ordinary Portland cement, fly ash and bottom
ash at various ratio. The mixtures of peat-binder-filler were subjected to the
unconfined compressive strength (UCS) test, bacterial count test and chemical
elemental analysis by using XRF, XRD, FTIR and EDS. Two pattern of strength over
curing period were observed. Mixing 1 samples showed a steadily increase in strength
over curing period until Day 56 while Mixing 2 showed a decrease in strength pattern
at Day 28 and Day 56. Samples which increase in strength steadily have less bacterial
count and enzymatic activity with increase quantity of crystallites. Samples with lower
strength recorded increase in bacterial count and enzymatic activity with less
crystallites. Analysis using XRD showed that pargasite
(NaCa2[Mg4Al](Si6Al2)O22(OH)2) was formed in the higher strength samples while in
the lower strength samples, pargasite was predicted to be converted into monosodium
phosphate and Mg(OH)2 as bacterial consortium was re-activated. The MichaelisMenten coefficient, Km of the bio-chemical reaction in solidified peat was calculated
as 303.60. This showed that reaction which happened during solidification work was
inefficient. The kinetics for crystallite formation with enzymatic effect is modelled as
135.42 (1/[S] + 0.44605) which means, when pargasite formed is lower, the amount
of enzyme secretes is higher
Machine Learning for Fluid Mechanics
The field of fluid mechanics is rapidly advancing, driven by unprecedented
volumes of data from field measurements, experiments and large-scale
simulations at multiple spatiotemporal scales. Machine learning offers a wealth
of techniques to extract information from data that could be translated into
knowledge about the underlying fluid mechanics. Moreover, machine learning
algorithms can augment domain knowledge and automate tasks related to flow
control and optimization. This article presents an overview of past history,
current developments, and emerging opportunities of machine learning for fluid
mechanics. It outlines fundamental machine learning methodologies and discusses
their uses for understanding, modeling, optimizing, and controlling fluid
flows. The strengths and limitations of these methods are addressed from the
perspective of scientific inquiry that considers data as an inherent part of
modeling, experimentation, and simulation. Machine learning provides a powerful
information processing framework that can enrich, and possibly even transform,
current lines of fluid mechanics research and industrial applications.Comment: To appear in the Annual Reviews of Fluid Mechanics, 202
NARX-based nonlinear system identification using orthogonal least squares basis hunting
An orthogonal least squares technique for basis hunting (OLS-BH) is proposed to construct sparse radial basis function (RBF) models for NARX-type nonlinear systems. Unlike most of the existing RBF or kernel modelling methods, whichplaces the RBF or kernel centers at the training input data points and use a fixed common variance for all the regressors, the proposed OLS-BH technique tunes the RBF center and diagonal covariance matrix of individual regressor by minimizing the training mean square error. An efficient optimization method isadopted for this basis hunting to select regressors in an orthogonal forward selection procedure. Experimental results obtained using this OLS-BH technique demonstrate that it offers a state-of-the-art method for constructing parsimonious RBF models with excellent generalization performance
