A critical analysis of research potential, challenges and future directives in industrial wireless sensor networks
In recent years, Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks (IWSNs) have emerged as an important research theme with applications spanning a wide range of industries including automation, monitoring, process control, feedback systems and automotive. Wide scope of IWSNs applications ranging from small production units, large oil and gas industries to nuclear fission control, enables a fast-paced research in this field. Though IWSNs offer advantages of low cost, flexibility, scalability, self-healing, easy deployment and reformation, yet they pose certain limitations on available potential and introduce challenges on multiple fronts due to their susceptibility to highly complex and uncertain industrial environments. In this paper a detailed discussion on design objectives, challenges and solutions, for IWSNs, are presented. A careful evaluation of industrial systems, deadlines and possible hazards in industrial atmosphere are discussed. The paper also presents a thorough review of the existing standards and industrial protocols and gives a critical evaluation of potential of these standards and protocols along with a detailed discussion on available hardware platforms, specific industrial energy harvesting techniques and their capabilities. The paper lists main service providers for IWSNs solutions and gives insight of future trends and research gaps in the field of IWSNs

Wireless indoor localisation within the 5G internet of radio light
This thesis was submitted for the award of Doctor of Philosophy and was awarded by Brunel University LondonNumerous applications can be enhanced by accurate and efficient indoor localisation using wireless
sensor networks, however trade-offs often exist between these two parameters. In this thesis, realworld
and simulation data is used to examine the hybrid millimeter wave and Visible Light
Communications (VLC) architecture of the 5G Internet of Radio Light (IoRL) Horizon 2020 project.
Consequently, relevant localisation challenges within Visible Light Positioning (VLP) and asynchronous
sampling networks are identified, and more accurate and efficient solutions are developed.
Currently, VLP relies strongly on the assumed Lambertian properties of light sources.
However, in practice, not all lights are Lambertian. To support the widespread deployment of VLC
technology in numerous environments, measurements from non-Lambertian sources are analysed to
provide new insights into the limitations of existing VLP techniques. Subsequently, a novel VLP
calibration technique is proposed, and results indicate a 59% accuracy improvement against existing
methods. This solution enables high accuracy centimetre level VLP to be achieved with non-
Lambertian sources.
Asynchronous sampling of range-based measurements is known to impact localisation
performance negatively. Various Asynchronous Sampling Localisation Techniques (ASLT) exist to
mitigate these effects. While effective at improving positioning performance, the exact suitability of
such solutions is not evident due to their additional processes, subsequent complexity, and increased
costs. As such, extensive simulations are conducted to study the effectiveness of ASLT under variable
sampling latencies, sensor measurement noise, and target trajectories. Findings highlight the
computational demand of existing ASLT and motivate the development of a novel solution. The
proposed Kalman Extrapolated Least Squares (KELS) method achieves optimal localisation
performance with a significant energy reduction of over 50% when compared to current leading ASLT.
The work in this thesis demonstrates both the capability for high performance VLP from non-
Lambertian sources as well as the potential for energy efficient localisation for sequentially sampled
range measurements.Horizon 202
Challenges and Opportunities of Optical Wireless Communication Technologies
In this chapter, we present various opportunities of using optical wireless communication (OWC) technologies in each sector of optical communication networks. Moreover, challenges of optical wireless network implementations are investigated. We characterized the optical wireless communication channel through the channel measurements and present different models for the OWC link performance evaluations. In addition, we present some technologies for the OWC performance enhancement in order to address the last-mile transmission bottleneck of the system efficiently. The technologies can be of great help in alleviating the stringent requirement by the cloud radio access network (C-RAN) backhaul/fronthaul as well as in the evolution toward an efficient backhaul/fronthaul for the 5G network. Furthermore, we present a proof-of-concept experiment in order to demonstrate and evaluate high capacity/flexible coherent PON and OWC links for different network configurations in the terrestrial links. To achieve this, we employ advanced modulation format and digital signal processing (DSP) techniques in the offline and real-time mode of the operation. The proposed configuration has the capability to support different applications, services, and multiple operators over a shared optical fiber infrastructure
Low power design of a versatile analog mixed Signal sensor module
The development of space electronics especially for launcher such as Ariane 6 has to fulfill space standards and space requirements provided by the space industries. The standards of the European Cooperation for Space Standardization (ECSS) are used extensively to ensure a development process that meets the space requirements. This standard covers space project management, space product assurance and space engineering. The ECSS is a cooperative effort of the European Space Agency, national Space Agencies and European Industry Associations for the purpose of developing and maintaining common standards. The work presented in this dissertation was carried out to fill the gap of developing wireless sensor network for Ariane launchers. The development process follows the space requirements that demand the sensor node to survive the environmental condition inside the launcher. This makes the work uniquely compared to commercial wireless sensor network development. The versatile analog mixed signal module proposed in this work consists of infrared transmitter, VLC receiver, power management, data processing with digital/analog sensor interface unit and solar cell as energy harvester. The sensor module is used to build wireless sensor network inside the Vehicle Equipment Bay (VEB) of Ariane 5

Meanwhile, visible light communication (VLC) using light devices such as light emitting diodes (LEDs) has been deemed to be a promising candidate in the heterogeneous wireless networks that may collaborate with radio frequencies (RF) wireless networks. In particular, light-fidelity has a great potential for deployment in future indoor environments because of its high throughput and security advantages. This paper provides a comprehensive study of a novel positioning technology based on visible white LED lights, which has attracted much attention from both academia and industry. The essential characteristics and principles of this system are deeply discussed, and relevant positioning algorithms and designs are classified and elaborated. This paper undertakes a thorough investigation into current LED-based indoor positioning systems and compares their performance through many aspects, such as test environment, accuracy, and cost. It presents indoor hybrid positioning systems among VLC and other systems (e.g., inertial sensors and RF systems). We also review and classify outdoor VLC positioning applications for the first time. Finally, this paper surveys major advances as well as open issues, challenges, and future research directions in VLC positioning systems.Peer reviewe
In-body Communications Exploiting Light:A Proof-of-concept Study Using ex vivo Tissue Samples
This article presents a feasibility study on the transmission of information through the biological tissues exploiting light. The experimental results demonstrating the potentials of optical wireless communications through biological tissues (OCBT) are presented. The main application of the proposed technology is in-body communications, where wireless connectivity needs to be provided to implanted electronic devices, such as pacemakers, cardiac defibrillators, and smart pills, for instance. Traditionally, in-body communications are performed using radio and acoustic waves. However, light has several fundamental advantages making the proposed technology highly attractive for this purpose. In particular, optical communications are highly secure, private, safe, and in many cases, extremely simple with the potential of low-power implementation. In the experiments, near-infrared light was used, as the light propagation in biotissues is more favorable in this part of the spectrum. The amount of light exposure given to biotissues was controlled to keep it within the safety limits. Information transmission experiments were carried out with the temperature-controlled ex vivo samples of porcine tissue. The tissue temperature was found to be significantly affecting the light propagation process. Communication performance with respect to the biotissue thickness and light direction was assessed. The results showed that optical channels to and from the possible implant are nearly reciprocal. Communication links were established to the deepness of more than four centimeters, and the data rates of up to 100 Kbps were obtained. The encouraging results of this study allow us to anticipate the potential applications of the proposed light-based technology to communicate with the various electronic devices implanted at different depths in the human body

No entanto, as ligações
The proliferation of different mobile devices, bandwidth-intensive applications
and services contribute to the increase in the broadband connections
and the volume of traffic on the mobile networks. This exponential growth
has put considerable pressure on the mobile network operators (MNOs). In
principal, there is a need for networks that not only offer low-complexity,
low-energy consumption, and extremely low-latency but also high-capacity
at relatively low cost. In order to address the demand, MNOs have given significant
attention to the cloud radio access network (C-RAN) due to its beneficial
features in terms of performance optimization and cost-effectiveness.
The de facto standard for distributing wireless signal over the C-RAN fronthaul
is the common public radio interface (CPRI). However, optical links
based on CPRI interfaces requires large bandwidth. Also, the aforementioned
requirements can be realized with the implementation of free space
optical (FSO) link, which is an optical wireless system. The FSO is an appealing
alternative to the radio frequency (RF) communication system that
combines the flexibility and mobility offered by the RF networks with the
high-data rates provided by the optical systems. However, the FSO links are
susceptible to atmospheric impairments which eventually hinder the system
performance. Consequently, these limitations prevent FSO from being an
efficient standalone fronthaul solution. So, precise channel characterizations
and advanced technologies are required for practical FSO link deployment
and operation. In this thesis, we study an efficient fronthaul implementation
that is based on radio-on-FSO (RoFSO) technologies. We propose closedform
expressions for fading-mitigation and for the estimation of channel
capacity so as to alleviate the system complexity. Numerical simulations
are presented for adaptive modulation scheme using advanced modulation
formats. We also consider schemes like hybrid RF/FSO and relay-assisted
transmission technologies that can help in alleviating the stringent requirements
by the C-RAN backhaul/fronthaul. The propose models not only
reduce the computational requirements/efforts, but also have a number of
diverse merits such as high-accuracy, low-memory requirements, fast and
stable operation compared to the current state-of-the-art analytical based
approaches. In addition to the FSO channel characterization, we present
a proof-of-concept experiment in which we study the transmission capabilities
of a hybrid passive optical network (PON)-FSO system. This is
implemented with the real-time receiver that is emulated by a commercial
field-programmable gate array (FPGA). This helps in facilitating an
open system and hence enables interoperability, portability, and open software
standards. The hybrid schemes have the ability to support different
applications, services, and multiple operators over a shared optical fiber
infrastructure
