    Control of a non-isothermal continuous stirred tank reactor by a feedback–feedforward structure using type-2 fuzzy logic controllers

    A control system that uses type-2 fuzzy logic controllers (FLC) is proposed for the control of a non-isothermal continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR), where a first order irreversible reaction occurs and that is characterized by the presence of bifurcations. Bifurcations due to parameter variations can bring the reactor to instability or create new working conditions which although stable are unacceptable. An extensive analysis of the uncontrolled CSTR dynamics was carried out and used for the choice of the control configuration and the development of controllers. In addition to a feedback controller, the introduction of a feedforward control loop was required to maintain effective control in the presence of disturbances. Simulation results confirmed the effectiveness and the robustness of the type-2 FLC which outperforms its type-1 counterpart particularly when system uncertainties are present

    Frequency Control of Microgrid with Renewable Generation using PID Controller based Krill Herd

    The main of this paper is to provide optimal control of a state microgrid system. The proposed configuration composes of renewable generation systems such as solar photovoltaic system and wind turbine generator with a Diesel Engine Generator and Fuel-Cell. An Aqua electrolyzer and other energy storage systems such as battery and flywheel are also used in the proposed microgrid. A standard PID (Proportional Integral Derivative) controller scheme is introduced whose its parameters are determined using different optimizations algorithm such as Algorithm Genetic, Particle Swarm Optimization, and Krill Herd algorithm for minimizing frequency and power deviations, in order to enhance the operation of this system. The PID controller gains are optimized by resolving an objective function. The simulation results are shown, and given that the Krill Herd algorithm improves the performance of the system in comparison with GA and PSO based on PID. The efficiency of the system is improved

    Optimal Controller Design for Speed Governors of Hydroelectric Power Plant

    Speed governors have critical importance on hydroelectric power plants, which are adjusted to the rotating speed of hydroelectric generation based on load demand of the grid. The rotating speed is the main factor to balance power generation and load demand. The well-designed controller is needed to control speed governors with high accuracy. A well-defined model is needed to obtain desired control structure. Therefore, in this study, initially, the mathematical model of a hydroelectric power plant is obtained by using physical characteristics of a real-world. Then by using this model and corresponding real-world data, a set of controller parameters is designed by using tuning methodologies based on heuristic optimization algorithms, and their performances are compared with each other and with a classical tuning methodology. Evolutionary-based and nature-inspired-based heuristic optimization algorithms are selected as the tuning algorithms not only to compare the performance of these algorithms with a classical method but also with different origins. The performance of the optimized controller improves the performance of the overall system and helps to get desired performance. The results also indicate that as long as the desired performance criteria are defined as accurate as possible, the performance of the optimization algorithms is acceptable

    A comparison of fuzzy-based energy management systems adjusted by nature-inspired algorithms

    The growing energy demand around the world has increased the usage of renewable energy sources (RES) such as photovoltaic and wind energies. The combination of traditional power systems and RESs has generated diverse problems due especially to the stochastic nature of RESs. Microgrids (MG) arise to address these types of problems and to increase the penetration of RES to the utility network. A microgrid includes an energy management system (EMS) to operate its components and energy sources efficiently. The objectives pursued by the EMS are usually economically related to minimizing the operating costs of the MG or maximizing its income. However, due to new regulations of the network operators, a new objective related to the minimization of power peaks and fluctuations in the power profile exchanged with the utility network has taken great interest in recent years. In this regard, EMSs based on off-line trained fuzzy logic control (FLC) have been proposed as an alternative approach to those based on on-line optimization mixed-integer linear (or nonlinear) programming to reduce computational efforts. However, the procedure to adjust the FLC parameters has been barely addressed. This parameter adjustment is an optimization problem itself that can be formulated in terms of a cost/objective function and is susceptible to being solved by metaheuristic nature-inspired algorithms. In particular, this paper evaluates a methodology for adjusting the FLC parameters of the EMS of a residential microgrid that aims to minimize the power peaks and fluctuations on the power profile exchanged with the utility network through two nature-inspired algorithms, namely particle swarm optimization and differential evolution. The methodology is based on the definition of a cost function to be optimized. Numerical simulations on a specific microgrid example are presented to compare and evaluate the performances of these algorithms, also including a comparison with other ones addressed in previous works such as the Cuckoo search approach. As learning computers can deal with technical complexities, the tasks of human operators remain to specify goals on increasingly higher levels.     A Comprehensive Survey on Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm and Its Applications

    Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a heuristic global optimization method, proposed originally by Kennedy and Eberhart in 1995. It is now one of the most commonly used optimization techniques. This survey presented a comprehensive investigation of PSO. On one hand, we provided advances with PSO, including its modifications (including quantum-behaved PSO, bare-bones PSO, chaotic PSO, and fuzzy PSO), population topology (as fully connected, von Neumann, ring, star, random, etc.), hybridization (with genetic algorithm, simulated annealing, Tabu search, artificial immune system, ant colony algorithm, artificial bee colony, differential evolution, harmonic search, and biogeography-based optimization), extensions (to multiobjective, constrained, discrete, and binary optimization), theoretical analysis (parameter selection and tuning, and convergence analysis), and parallel implementation (in multicore, multiprocessor, GPU, and cloud computing forms). On the other hand, we offered a survey on applications of PSO to the following eight fields: electrical and electronic engineering, automation control systems, communication theory, operations research, mechanical engineering, fuel and energy, medicine, chemistry, and biology. It is hoped that this survey would be beneficial for the researchers studying PSO algorithms

    Model-free Adaptive Sliding Mode Control for Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor

    The continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) is representative of a typical class of chemical equipment, where the dynamics is strongly nonlinear. Two difficult issues in control of a CSTR are the difficulty of accurate modeling and the suppression of external disturbances. Driven by these challenging issues and demanding expectations around performance levels, this paper proposes a control solution based on the model-free data-driven linearization method and sliding mode control. After giving the corresponding stability proof, the effectiveness of the method is validated by MATLAB simulation. Experimental results are also presented to further test the proposed method
