    A review of convex approaches for control, observation and safety of linear parameter varying and Takagi-Sugeno systems

    This paper provides a review about the concept of convex systems based on Takagi-Sugeno, linear parameter varying (LPV) and quasi-LPV modeling. These paradigms are capable of hiding the nonlinearities by means of an equivalent description which uses a set of linear models interpolated by appropriately defined weighing functions. Convex systems have become very popular since they allow applying extended linear techniques based on linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) to complex nonlinear systems. This survey aims at providing the reader with a significant overview of the existing LMI-based techniques for convex systems in the fields of control, observation and safety. Firstly, a detailed review of stability, feedback, tracking and model predictive control (MPC) convex controllers is considered. Secondly, the problem of state estimation is addressed through the design of proportional, proportional-integral, unknown input and descriptor observers.     Gain-scheduled H∞ control via parameter-dependent Lyapunov functions

    Synthesising a gain-scheduled output feedback H∞ controller via parameter-dependent Lyapunov functions for linear parameter-varying (LPV) plant models involves solving an infinite number of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). In practice, for affine LPV models, a finite number of LMIs can be achieved using convexifying techniques. This paper proposes an alternative approach to achieve a finite number of LMIs. By simple manipulations on the bounded real lemma inequality, a symmetric matrix polytope inequality can be formed. Hence, the LMIs need only to be evaluated at all vertices of such a symmetric matrix polytope. In addition, a construction technique of the intermediate controller variables is also proposed as an affine matrix-valued function in the polytopic coordinates of the scheduled parameters. Computational results on a numerical example using the approach were compared with those from a multi-convexity approach in order to demonstrate the impacts of the approach on parameter-dependent Lyapunov-based stability and performance analysis. Furthermore, numerical simulation results show the effectiveness of these proposed techniques

    Piecewise Linear Control Systems

    This thesis treats analysis and design of piecewise linear control systems. Piecewise linear systems capture many of the most common nonlinearities in engineering systems, and they can also be used for approximation of other nonlinear systems. Several aspects of linear systems with quadratic constraints are generalized to piecewise linear systems with piecewise quadratic constraints. It is shown how uncertainty models for linear systems can be extended to piecewise linear systems, and how these extensions give insight into the classical trade-offs between fidelity and complexity of a model. Stability of piecewise linear systems is investigated using piecewise quadratic Lyapunov functions. Piecewise quadratic Lyapunov functions are much more powerful than the commonly used quadratic Lyapunov functions. It is shown how piecewise quadratic Lyapunov functions can be computed via convex optimization in terms of linear matrix inequalities. The computations are based on a compact parameterization of continuous piecewise quadratic functions and conditional analysis using the S-procedure. A unifying framework for computation of a variety of Lyapunov functions via convex optimization is established based on this parameterization. Systems with attractive sliding modes and systems with bounded regions of attraction are also treated. Dissipativity analysis and optimal control problems with piecewise quadratic cost functions are solved via convex optimization. The basic results are extended to fuzzy systems, hybrid systems and smooth nonlinear systems. It is shown how Lyapunov functions with a discontinuous dependence on the discrete state can be computed via convex optimization. An automated procedure for increasing the flexibility of the Lyapunov function candidate is suggested based on linear programming duality. A Matlab toolbox that implements several of the results derived in the thesis is presented

    Design and implementation of fuzzy logic controllers

    The main objectives of our research are to present a self-contained overview of fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic, develop a methodology for control system design using fuzzy logic controllers, and to design and implement a fuzzy logic controller for a real system. We first present the fundamental concepts of fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic. Fuzzy sets and basic fuzzy operations are defined. In addition, for control systems, it is important to understand the concepts of linguistic values, term sets, fuzzy rule base, inference methods, and defuzzification methods. Second, we introduce a four-step fuzzy logic control system design procedure. The design procedure is illustrated via four examples, showing the capabilities and robustness of fuzzy logic control systems. This is followed by a tuning procedure that we developed from our design experience. Third, we present two Lyapunov based techniques for stability analysis. Finally, we present our design and implementation of a fuzzy logic controller for a linear actuator to be used to control the direction of the Free Flight Rotorcraft Research Vehicle at LaRC

    H ? filtering for stochastic singular fuzzy systems with time-varying delay

    This paper considers the H? filtering problem for stochastic singular fuzzy systems with timevarying delay. We assume that the state and measurement are corrupted by stochastic uncertain exogenous disturbance and that the system dynamic is modeled by Ito-type stochastic differential equations. Based on an auxiliary vector and an integral inequality, a set of delay-dependent sufficient conditions is established, which ensures that the filtering error system is e?t - weighted integral input-to-state stable in mean (iISSiM). A fuzzy filter is designed such that the filtering error system is impulse-free, e?t -weighted iISSiM and the H? attenuation level from disturbance to estimation error is belowa prescribed scalar.Aset of sufficient conditions for the solvability of the H? filtering problem is obtained in terms of a new type of Lyapunov function and a set of linear matrix inequalities. Simulation examples are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed filtering approach developed in this paper

    Fuzzy control systems for thermal processes: synthesis, design and implementation

    A completed case study on fuzzy logic control of thermal processes has been carried out using a professional laboratory oven for industrial purpose as an experimental test rig. It involved system engineering design analysis, control synthesis, and implementation as well as application software and signal interface design and development. The resulting expertise and lessons learned are reported in this contribution. The structure of PD type of fuzzy logic controllers is closely discussed along with synthesis issues of membership functions and knowledge rule base. Special software was developed using Microsoft Visual Studio, C++ and Visual basic for GUI for a standard PC platform. The application software designed and implemented has four modules: FIS editor, Rule Editor, Membership Function Editor and Fuzzy Controller with Rule Viewer. Quality and performance of the overall fuzzy process control system have been investigated and validated to fulfill the required quality specification

    Discrete-time sliding mode control of high precision linear drive using frictional model

    The paper deals with high precision motion control of linear drive system. The accuracy and behavior of the linear drive system are highly affected by the non-linear frictional component compromising of stiction, viscous and stribeck effect present in the system especially in the vicinity of zero velocity. In order to achieve the high accuracy and motion it is mandatory to drive our system with low velocity resulting in many non linear phenomena like tracking error, limit cycles and undesired stick-slip motion etc. This paper discuss the design and implementation of discrete time sliding mode control along with the implementation of dynamic frictional model in order to estimate and compensate the disturbance arising due to frictional component. Experimental results are presented to illustrate the effectiveness and achievable control performance of the proposed scheme
