    A Sensitivity Study of L-Band Synthetic Aperture Radar Measurements to the Internal Variations and Evolving Nature of Oil Slicks

    This thesis focuses on the use of multi-polarization synthetic aperture radar (SAR) for characterization of marine oil spills. In particular, the potential of detecting internal zones within oil slicks in SAR scenes are investigated by a direct within-slick segmentation scheme, along with a sensitivity study of SAR measurements to the evolving nature of oil slicks. A simple, k-means clustering algorithm, along with a Gaussian Mixture Model are separately applied, giving rise to a comparative study of the internal class structures obtained by both strategies. As no optical imagery is available for verification, the within-slick segmentations are evaluated with respect to the behavior of a set of selected polarimetric features, the prevailing wind conditions and weathering processes. In addition, a fake zone detection scheme is established to help determine if the class structures obtained potentially reflect actual internal variations within the slicks. Further, the evolving nature of oil slicks is studied based on the temporal development of a set of selected geometric region descriptors. Two data sets are available for the investigation presented in this thesis, both captured by a full-polarization L-band airborne SAR system with high spatial- and temporal resolution. The results obtained with respect to the zone detection scheme developed supports the hypothesis of the existence of detectable zones within oil spills in SAR scenes. Additionally, the method established for studying the evolving nature of oil slicks is found convenient for accessing the general behavior of the slicks, and simplifies interpretation

    Spectral and spatial methods for the classification of urban remote sensing data

    Lors de ces travaux, nous nous sommes intéressés au problème de la classification supervisée d'images satellitaires de zones urbaines. Les données traitées sont des images optiques à très hautes résolutions spatiales: données panchromatiques à très haute résolution spatiale (IKONOS, QUICKBIRD, simulations PLEIADES) et des images hyperspectrales (DAIS, ROSIS). Deux stratégies ont été proposées. La première stratégie consiste en une phase d'extraction de caractéristiques spatiales et spectrales suivie d'une phase de classification. Ces caractéristiques sont extraites par filtrages morphologiques : ouvertures et fermetures géodésiques et filtrages surfaciques auto-complémentaires. La classification est réalisée avec les machines à vecteurs supports (SVM) non linéaires. Nous proposons la définition d'un noyau spatio-spectral utilisant de manière conjointe l'information spatiale et l'information spectrale extraites lors de la première phase. La seconde stratégie consiste en une phase de fusion de données pre- ou post-classification. Lors de la fusion postclassification, divers classifieurs sont appliqués, éventuellement sur plusieurs données issues d'une même scène (image panchromat ique, image multi-spectrale). Pour chaque pixel, l'appartenance à chaque classe est estimée à l'aide des classifieurs. Un schéma de fusion adaptatif permettant d'utiliser l'information sur la fiabilité locale de chaque classifieur, mais aussi l'information globale disponible a priori sur les performances de chaque algorithme pour les différentes classes, est proposé. Les différents résultats sont fusionnés à l'aide d'opérateurs flous. Les méthodes ont été validées sur des images réelles. Des améliorations significatives sont obtenues par rapport aux méthodes publiées dans la litterature

    The Turkish Straits Sea Area (TSSA) is a long water passage that is consisted of the Sea of Marmara, an inland sea within Turkey's borders, and two narrow straits connected to neighboring seas. With a strategic location between the Balkans and Anatolia, the Black Sea and the Mediterranean, and dominated by the continental climate, the region hosted many civilizations throughout the centuries. This makes the region among the busiest routes in the world, with sea traffic three times higher than that in the Suez Canal. The straits are the most difficult waterways to navigate and witnessed many hazardous and important collisions and accidents throughout history. In addition, this area has vital roles as a biological corridor and barrier among three distinctive marine realms. Therefore, the region is rather sensitive to damages of national and international maritime activities, which may cause severe environmental problems.      Ocean Remote Sensing with Synthetic Aperture Radar

    The ocean covers approximately 71% of the Earth’s surface, 90% of the biosphere and contains 97% of Earth’s water. The Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) can image the ocean surface in all weather conditions and day or night. SAR remote sensing on ocean and coastal monitoring has become a research hotspot in geoscience and remote sensing. This book—Progress in SAR Oceanography—provides an update of the current state of the science on ocean remote sensing with SAR.     Global Monitoring for Security and Stability (GMOSS) - Integrated Scientific and Technological Research Supporting Security Aspects of the European Union

    This report is a collection of scientific activities and achievements of members of the GMOSS Network of Excellence during the period March 2004 to November 2007. Exceeding the horizon of classical remote-sensing-focused projects, GMOSS is characterized by the integration of political and social aspects of security with the assessment of remote sensing capabilities and end-users support opportunities. The report layout reflects the work breakdown structure of GMOSS and is divided into four parts. Part I Concepts and Integration addresses the political background of European Security Policy and possibilities for Earth Observation technologies for a contribution. Besides it illustrates integration activities just as the GMOSS Gender Action Plan or a description of the GMOSS testcases. Part II of this book presents various Application activities conducted by the network partners. The contributions vary from pipeline sabotage analysis in Iraq to GIS studies about groundwater vulnerability in Gaza Strip, from Population Monitoring in Zimbabwe to Post-Conflict Urban Reconstruction Assessments and many more. Part III focuses on the research and development of image processing methods and Tools. The themes range from SAR interferometry for the measurement of Surface Displacement to Robust Satellite Techniques for monitoring natural hazards like volcanoes and earthquakes. Further subjects are the 3D detection of buildings in VHR imagery or texture analysis techniques on time series of satellite images with variable illumination and many other more. The report closes with Part IV. In the chapter ¿The Way Forward¿ a review on four years of integrated work is done. Challenges and achievements during this period are depicted.
