    Meta-heuristic algorithms in car engine design: a literature survey

    Meta-heuristic algorithms are often inspired by natural phenomena, including the evolution of species in Darwinian natural selection theory, ant behaviors in biology, flock behaviors of some birds, and annealing in metallurgy. Due to their great potential in solving difficult optimization problems, meta-heuristic algorithms have found their way into automobile engine design. There are different optimization problems arising in different areas of car engine management including calibration, control system, fault diagnosis, and modeling. In this paper we review the state-of-the-art applications of different meta-heuristic algorithms in engine management systems. The review covers a wide range of research, including the application of meta-heuristic algorithms in engine calibration, optimizing engine control systems, engine fault diagnosis, and optimizing different parts of engines and modeling. The meta-heuristic algorithms reviewed in this paper include evolutionary algorithms, evolution strategy, evolutionary programming, genetic programming, differential evolution, estimation of distribution algorithm, ant colony optimization, particle swarm optimization, memetic algorithms, and artificial immune system

    Data mining for decision making in engineering optimal design

    Often in modeling the engineering optimization design problems, the value of objective function(s) is not clearly defined in terms of design variables. Instead it is obtained by some numerical analysis such as FE structural analysis, fluid mechanic analysis, and thermodynamic analysis, etc. Yet, the numerical analyses are considerably time consuming to obtain the final value of objective function(s). For the reason of reducing the number of analyses as few as possible our methodology works as a supporting tool to the meta-models. The research in meta-modeling for multiobjective optimization are relatively young and there is still much to do. Here is shown that visualizing the problem on the basis of the randomly sampled geometrical big-data of computer aided design (CAD) and computer aided engineering (CAE) simulation results, combined with utilizing classification tool of data mining could be effective as a supporting system to the available meta-modeling approaches. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method a study case in 3D wing optimal design is given. Along with the study case, it is discussed that how effective the proposed methodology could be in further practical engineering design problems

    ONLINE APPROXIMATION ASSISTED MULTIOBJECTIVE OPTIMIZATION WITH HEAT EXCHANGER DESIGN APPLICATIONS

    Computer simulations can be intensive as is the case in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA). The computational cost can become prohibitive when using these simulations with multiobjective design optimization. One way to address this issue is to replace a computationally intensive simulation by an approximation which allows for a quick evaluation of a large number of design alternatives as needed by an optimizer. This dissertation proposes an approach for multiobjective design optimization when combined with computationally expensive simulations for heat exchanger design problems. The research is performed along four research directions. These are: (1) a new Online Approximation Assisted Multiobjective Optimization (OAAMO) approach with a focus on the expected optimum region, (2) a new approximation assisted multiobjective optimization with global and local metamodeling that always produces feasible solutions, (3) a framework that integrates OAAMO with multiscale simulations (OAAMOMS) for design of heat exchangers at the segment and heat exchanger levels, and (4) applications of OAAMO combined with CFD for shape design of a header for a new generation of heat exchangers using Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines (NURBS). The approaches developed in this thesis are also applied to optimize a coldplate used in electronic cooling devices and different types of plate heat exchangers. In addition many numerical test problems are solved by the proposed methods. The results of these studies show that the proposed online approximation assisted multiobjective optimization is an efficient approach that can be used to predict optimum solutions for a wide class of problems including heat exchanger design problems while reducing significantly the computational cost when compared with existing methods

    Parallel Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithms: A Comprehensive Survey

    Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithms (MOEAs) are powerful search techniques that have been extensively used to solve difficult problems in a wide variety of disciplines. However, they can be very demanding in terms of computational resources. Parallel implementations of MOEAs (pMOEAs) provide considerable gains regarding performance and scalability and, therefore, their relevance in tackling computationally expensive applications. This paper presents a survey of pMOEAs, describing a refined taxonomy, an up-to-date review of methods and the key contributions to the field. Furthermore, some of the open questions that require further research are also briefly discussed

    A Generalized Method for Efficient Global Optimization of Antenna Design

    Efficiency improvement is of great significance for simulation-driven antenna design optimization methods based on evolutionary algorithms (EAs). The two main efficiency enhancement methods exploit data-driven surrogate models and/or multi-fidelity simulation models to assist EAs. However, optimization methods based on the latter either need ad hoc low-fidelity model setup or have difficulties in handling problems with more than a few design variables, which is a main barrier for industrial applications. To address this issue, a generalized three stage multi-fidelity-simulation-model assisted antenna design optimization framework is proposed in this paper. The main ideas include introduction of a novel data mining stage handling the discrepancy between simulation models of different fidelities, and a surrogate-model-assisted combined global and local search stage for efficient high-fidelity simulation model-based optimization. This framework is then applied to SADEA, which is a state-of-the-art surrogate-model-assisted antenna design optimization method, constructing SADEA-II. Experimental results indicate that SADEA-II successfully handles various discrepancy between simulation models and considerably outperforms SADEA in terms of computational efficiency while ensuring improved design quality

    An Algorithmic Framework for Multiobjective Optimization

    Multiobjective (MO) optimization is an emerging field which is increasingly being encountered in many fields globally. Various metaheuristic techniques such as differential evolution (DE), genetic algorithm (GA), gravitational search algorithm (GSA), and particle swarm optimization (PSO) have been used in conjunction with scalarization techniques such as weighted sum approach and the normal-boundary intersection (NBI) method to solve MO problems. Nevertheless, many challenges still arise especially when dealing with problems with multiple objectives (especially in cases more than two). In addition, problems with extensive computational overhead emerge when dealing with hybrid algorithms. This paper discusses these issues by proposing an alternative framework that utilizes algorithmic concepts related to the problem structure for generating efficient and effective algorithms. This paper proposes a framework to generate new high-performance algorithms with minimal computational overhead for MO optimization

    System Architecture Design Using Multi-Criteria Optimization

    System architecture is defined as the description of a complex system in terms of its functional requirements, physical elements and their interrelationships. Designing a complex system architecture can be a difficult task involving multi-faceted trade-off decisions. The system architecture designs often have many project-specific goals involving mix of quantitative and qualitative criteria and a large design trade space. Several tools and methods have been developed to support the system architecture design process in the last few decades. However, many conventional problem solving techniques face difficulties in dealing with complex system design problems having many goals. In this research work, an interactive multi-criteria design optimization framework is proposed for solving many-objective system architecture design problems and generating a well distributed set of Pareto optimal solutions for these problems. System architecture design using multi-criteria optimization is demonstrated using a real-world application of an aero engine health management (EHM) system. A design process is presented for the optimal deployment of the EHM system functional operations over physical architecture subsystems. The EHM system architecture design problem is formulated as a multi-criteria optimization problem. The proposed methodology successfully generates a well distributed family of Pareto optimal architecture solutions for the EHM system, which provides valuable insights into the design trade-offs. Uncertainty analysis is implemented using an efficient polynomial chaos approach and robust architecture solutions are obtained for the EHM system architecture design. Performance assessment through evaluation of benchmark test metrics demonstrates the superior performance of the proposed methodology
