Designing sustainable cold chains for long-range food distribution: Energy-effective corridors on the Silk Road Belt
Modern food production-distribution processes represent a critical stressor for the environment and for natural ecosystems. The rising flows of food across growing and consumption areas couple with the higher expectations of consumers for the quality of products and compel the intensive use of refrigerated rooms and transport means throughout the food supply chain. In order to aid the design of sustainable cold chains that incorporate such aspects, this paper proposes a mixed integer linear programming model to minimize the total energy consumption associated with the cold operations experienced by perishable products. This model is intended for food traders, logistics practitioners, retail managers, and importers collaboratively called to design and plan a cost and environmentally effective supply strategy, physical channels, and infrastructures for cold chains. The proposed model is validated with a case study inspired by the distribution of two example food products, namely fresh apples and ice cream, along the New Silk Road connecting Europe and China. The illustrated analysis investigates the effect of alternative routes and transport modes on the sustainability of the cold chain. It is found that the most energy-efficient route for ice cream is via rail over a northern route and, for apples, is via a southern maritime route, and, for these two routes, the ratios of the total energy consumed to the energy content of the food are 760 and 913, respectively. By incorporating the energy lost due to the food quality decay, the model identifies the optimal route to adopt in accordance with the shelf life and the conservation temperature of each product
Logistics and Agri‐Food: Digitization to Increase Competitive Advantage and Sustainability. Literature Review and the Case of Italy
This paper examines the current challenges faced by logistics with a focus on the agri‐food sector. After outlining the context, a review of the literature on the relationship between logistics and strategic management in gaining and increasing competitiveness in the agri‐food sector is con-ducted. In particular, the flow of the paper is as follows: after examining the aforementioned managerial problem and its broader repercussions, the paper proceeds to address two main research questions. First, how and by which tools can digitization contribute to improving supply chain management and sustainability in logistics? Second, what are the main managerial and strategic implications and consequences of this for the agri‐food sector in terms of efficiency, effectiveness, cost reduction, and supply chain optimization? Finally, the paper presents Italy as a case study, chosen both for its peculiar internal differences in logistical infrastructures and entrepreneurial management between Northern and Southern regions (which could be at least partially overcome with the use of new technologies and frameworks) and for the importance of the agri‐food sector for the domestic economy (accounting about 25% of the country’s GDP), on which digitization should have positive effects in terms of value creation and sustainability
Integration of inland waterway transport in the intermodal supply chain: a taxonomy of research challenges
This paper identifies research opportunities which will enable the further integration of inland waterway transport in the intermodal supply chain. Intermodal transport may be interpreted as a chain of actors who supply a transport service. Inland navigation can play a crucial role in increasing supply chain service performance. A first group of research challenges lies in the evolving relationship between transport geography and logistics activities. The next set of research challenges has the objective to encourage efficient operations in IWT: development of a system wide model for IWT, integration of operational planning systems and analysis of bundling networks. A third group of research efforts is directed towards shippers and consignees who use the intermodal transport chain to send or receive their goods: further development of models that integrate intermodal transport decisions with supply chain decisions and creation of green supply chains. A fourth cluster of research challenges concerns the problem domain of external cost calculations. Finally detailed time series data on freight transport should be collected to support these future research tracks
Digital Twins for Ports: Derived from Smart City and Supply Chain Twinning Experience
Ports are striving for innovative technological solutions to cope with the
ever-increasing growth of transport, while at the same time improving their
environmental footprint. An emerging technology that has the potential to
substantially increase the efficiency of the multifaceted and interconnected
port processes is the digital twin. Although digital twins have been
successfully integrated in many industries, there is still a lack of
cross-domain understanding of what constitutes a digital twin. Furthermore, the
implementation of the digital twin in complex systems such as the port is still
in its infancy. This paper attempts to fill this research gap by conducting an
extensive cross-domain literature review of what constitutes a digital twin,
keeping in mind the extent to which the respective findings can be applied to
the port. It turns out that the digital twin of the port is most comparable to
complex systems such as smart cities and supply chains, both in terms of its
functional relevance as well as in terms of its requirements and
characteristics. The conducted literature review, considering the different
port processes and port characteristics, results in the identification of three
core requirements of a digital port twin, which are described in detail. These
include situational awareness, comprehensive data analytics capabilities for
intelligent decision making, and the provision of an interface to promote
multi-stakeholder governance and collaboration. Finally, specific operational
scenarios are proposed on how the port's digital twin can contribute to energy
savings by improving the use of port resources, facilities and operations.Comment: This work has been submitted to the IEEE for possible publication.

Systematic Review of Literature on Dry Port Concept Evolution
Dry port plays an important role in supply chain management and mitigates seaport problems. The aim of this paper is to review the dry port concept over the different phases. Today there are different types of dry ports, different interpretations on the dry port life cycle, and different relations with seaport. We will provide a clear vision on the concept development and the advantages that can be added to the seaport and transportation flow. Then, the study will show the evolution of the research community interest on the concept. In the first step, we will briefly present all the challenges faced by seaports today. Next, we will undertake a systematic literature review in order to provide a global vision able to answer questions concerning dry port concept, types, research evolution. Finally, we will present some research topics that open for us at the dry port seaport system
