    Children and young people\u27s self-reported experiences of asthma and self-management nursing strategies: An integrative review

    Aim: To explore children and young people\u27s (CYP) (5–24 years of age) self-reported experiences of asthma self-management strategies (ASMS) with nursing involvement across various settings. Background: Childhood asthma is an increasingly significant health issue, highlighting the importance of acquiring self-management skills to optimise future health outcomes. Registered nurses play a pivotal role in delivering appropriate, personalized self-management support. Methods: This integrative review searched four electronic databases: Cumulated Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature via Elton B. Stephens Company, Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), Object, View and Interactive Design (OVID), and PubMed, that followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis flowchart. Included studies were critically appraised using the Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal tools. Braun and Clarks thematic analysis was used to generate themes, and sub-themes. Findings: Fifteen studies were included for review. Thematic analysis generated three themes being healthy literacy; health and wellbeing; and tools and working together. Conclusions: Asthma continues to have negative physical, psychological, and social implications among CYP. CYP are both willing and capable of engaging in ASMS and learning self-management skills, however, continue to have unmet self-management needs. Implications to practice: Strategies must bolster health literacy, improve physical and psychological health, and harness interactive, youth-centric, and informative tools to facilitate communication and decrease the burden of self-management. Applications pose a promising avenue for self-management support. This age group remains under-explored and future research should enable meaningful engagement with CYP to better understand their perspectives and improve strategy success

    A case study in open source innovation: developing the Tidepool Platform for interoperability in type 1 diabetes management.

    OBJECTIVE:Develop a device-agnostic cloud platform to host diabetes device data and catalyze an ecosystem of software innovation for type 1 diabetes (T1D) management. MATERIALS AND METHODS:An interdisciplinary team decided to establish a nonprofit company, Tidepool, and build open-source software. RESULTS:Through a user-centered design process, the authors created a software platform, the Tidepool Platform, to upload and host T1D device data in an integrated, device-agnostic fashion, as well as an application ("app"), Blip, to visualize the data. Tidepool's software utilizes the principles of modular components, modern web design including REST APIs and JavaScript, cloud computing, agile development methodology, and robust privacy and security. DISCUSSION:By consolidating the currently scattered and siloed T1D device data ecosystem into one open platform, Tidepool can improve access to the data and enable new possibilities and efficiencies in T1D clinical care and research. The Tidepool Platform decouples diabetes apps from diabetes devices, allowing software developers to build innovative apps without requiring them to design a unique back-end (e.g., database and security) or unique ways of ingesting device data. It allows people with T1D to choose to use any preferred app regardless of which device(s) they use. CONCLUSION:The authors believe that the Tidepool Platform can solve two current problems in the T1D device landscape: 1) limited access to T1D device data and 2) poor interoperability of data from different devices. If proven effective, Tidepool's open source, cloud model for health data interoperability is applicable to other healthcare use cases

    Promotion of self-management of chronic disease in children and teenagers: scoping review

    Background: The scientific literature describes that self-management of chronic illness leads to improved health outcomes. Knowledge about interventions that promote self-management behaviors in children and teenagers has been poorly clarified. This study aims to map, in the scientific literature, the nature and extent of interventions that promote self-management of chronic disease, implemented and evaluated in contexts of health care provided to children and teenagers. Methods: The guidelines proposed by the Joanna Briggs Institute were followed. The survey was conducted in June 2021, with access to international databases and gray literature, in Portuguese, English, French, and Spanish. Results: Interventions that promote self-management of children and teenagers can be developed through a local contact or through technological means of support for health care. The use of online supports, such as applications or communication platforms, should be parameterized with health professionals, according to the needs of users. Conclusions: The acquisition of self-management skills in pediatrics is a process supported by the family, health professionals and the community, in which the nurse, in partnership, can promote communication and health education through cognitive strategies, behavioral programs included in physical or online programs, adjusted to the patients’ needs.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Context-aware system for cardiac condition monitoring and management: a survey

    Health monitoring assists physicians in the decision-making process, which in turn, improves quality of life. As technology advances, the usage and applications of context-aware systems continue to spread across different areas in patient monitoring and disease management. It provides a platform for healthcare professionals to assess the health status of patients in their care using multiple relevant parameters. In this survey, we consider context-aware systems proposed by researchers for health monitoring and management. More specifically, we investigate different technologies and techniques used for cardiac condition monitoring and management.     Untargeted metabolomics analysis of rat hippocampus subjected to sleep fragmentation

    Sleep fragmentation (SF) commonly occurs in several pathologic conditions and is especially associated with impairments of hippocampus-dependent neurocognitive functions. Although the effects of SF on hippocampus in terms of protein or gene levels were examined in several studies, the impact of SF at the metabolite level has not been investigated. Thus, in this study, the differentially expressed large-scale metabolite profiles of hippocampus in a rat model of SF were investigated using untargeted metabolomics approaches. Forty-eight rats were divided into the following 4 groups: 4-day SF group, 4-day exercise control (EC) group, 15-day SF group, and 15-day EC group (n = 12, each). SF was accomplished by forced exercise using a walking wheel system with 30-s on/90-s off cycles, and EC condition was set at 10-min on/30-min off. The metabolite profiles of rat hippocampi in the SF and EC groups were analyzed using liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry. Multivariate analysis revealed distinctive metabolic profiles and marker signals between the SF and corresponding EC groups. Metabolic changes were significant only in the 15-day SF group. In the 15-day SF group, L-tryptophan, myristoylcarnitine, and palmitoylcarnitine were significantly increased, while adenosine monophosphate, hypoxanthine, L-glutamate, L-aspartate, L-methionine, and glycerophosphocholine were decreased compared to the EC group. The alanine, aspartate, and glutamate metabolism pathway was observed as the common key pathway in the 15-day SF groups. The results from this untargeted metabolomics study provide a perspective on metabolic impact of SF on the hippocampus.Peer reviewe
