Food for talk: photo frames to support social connectedness for elderly people in a nursing home

Social connectedness is crucial to someone’s well-being. A case study is conducted to test whether the social connectedness of elderly people living in a nursing home and their family and friends can be improved through a photo frame. A SIM-based photo frame is used to keep the elderly people informed about the comings and goings of their loved ones. Eight elderly people living in a nursing home participated in this case study for 6-7 weeks. A content analysis of the photos revealed that the photos often were related to special events or holidays that happened in the past. Interviews indicated that the photos mainly served as food for talk, i.e. the photos initiated conversations between the elderly people mutually, with their family members and with the healthcare professionals. They all liked the photo frame and it didn’t serve as a means to exchange news, but as a catalyst to talk –mainly- about the past

Public Library: A place for the digital community archive

This article explores the possibility that public libraries can be repositories for digital community archives. The overarching goal is to establish a case for public libraries’ developing digital community archives that are participatory and which emphasize born-digital items rather than digitized physical items. This discussion follows my own research and experience in this area to include personal information management, social media and the personal archive, and the accidental community archive, and demonstrates that public libraries can focus on communities’ current events and people rather than solely on those from the past

From PhotoWork to PhotoUse: exploring personal digital photo activities

People accumulate large collections of digital photos, which they use for individual, social, and utilitarian purposes. In order to provide suitable technologies for enjoying our expanding photo collections, it is essential to understand how and to what purpose these collections are used. Contextual interviews with 12 participants in their homes explored the use of digital photos, incorporating new photo activities that are offered by new technologies. Based on the qualitative analysis of the collected data, we give an overview of current photo activities, which we term PhotoUse. We introduce a model of PhotoUse, which emphasises the purpose of photo activities rather than the tools to support them. We argue for the use of our model to design tools to support the user’s individual and social goals pertaining to PhotoUse
