1  ILA/ACRL Newsletter vol. 25, no. 4, July 2015 Regents Universities Library News  University of Iowa Libraries Friends of the UI Libraries held their annual event on May 6 and featured Mike Zahs and Red Cedar Chamber Music and Brinton’s famous moving pictures.   Colleen Theisen named a “Mover and Shaker” in the library industry by the Library Journal -http://blog.lib.uiowa.edu/news/2015/03/19/colleen-theisen-receives-prestigious-mover-and-shaker-award-from-library-journal/  Marianne Mason has been named by the director of the Government Publishing Office (GPO) to a three-year term on the Depository Library Council -  http://www.gpo.gov/pdfs/news-media/press/15news11.pdf  Submitted by Amy Paulus Private Academic Library News  Loras College Library The Loras College Library recently hosted a successful first Small Archival Projects Conference on Friday, April 17th.  There were 50 attendees from Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, and Minnesota.  The conference is organized by the Dubuque Area Library Information Consortium.   We are happy to welcome Greg Ludwig as our Student Employee & Circulation Services Librarian.  Greg started in February.  Finally, one of our librarians, one former librarian, and an English professor presented at the national ACRL conference in Portland: “Community Gardening: Librarian-Faculty Instruction Partnerships to Cultivate Scholars Across A Major”  Submitted by Joyce Meldrem  William Penn University This spring Wilcox Library awarded Watland-Richmond Research Award for the second year in a row. This award goes to students who demonstrate exceptional research skills in the Health and Life Sciences, Social and Behavioral Sciences and Business Divisions. This summer an award 2  wall is being installed in the library with name plaques to honor the winners of the Watland-Richmond Award.  The Foyer Gallery of Wilcox is also getting a facelift. The dated maroon panels are out and a more modern look and fresh paint are in.  Julie Hansen, Librarian and Archivist, was awarded a George Daily Family Trust grant. Over the past two years Julie and Jennifer Sterling have been recording the oral histories of William Penn alumni, former instructors and administrators. The grant money will be used to travel further and record more histories. Julie and Jennifer will also host a campus radio show about William Penn history.  Submitted by Jennifer Sterling  St. Ambrose University Library 6th Annual Employee Summer Reading St. Ambrose University library held its Sixth Annual Employee Summer Reading kick-off event on June 3, 2015. The summer reading program has been a favorite among faculty, staff, and students. It also includes a variety of programming for the months of June and July. This year’s summer reading theme is mystery. June 9th was the start of a short story discussion group. Short stories which are available in the public domain were selected for every Tuesday in the months of June and July. The stories cross a variety of genres including one special short story written by, St. Ambrose University Library’s own reference librarian, James O’Gorman.  Murder in the library   3  Onnica Marquez held an event entitled, “Murder in the library”.  A fake dead body was set up in the atrium of the library along with marked clues. Patrons were invited to use their investigative skills to pour over the suspect case files and put the pieces together. Blank case reports were available for patrons to write down their clues and solve the case. Who murdered Dewey Decimal?  It was Mae Venus (The little old librarian lady). How do we know? She has a serious criminal record as seen in the case files. There is a pearl earring in the crime scene that matches the one in her picture. The shoe print belongs to a small woman. There is also a little piece of gray hair on the chair. All of these clues lead us to Mae Venus.  Author Visit: Donald Harstad    In keeping with the summer reading theme, New York Times best-selling author Donald Harstad made an appearance at St. Ambrose University Library to discuss his crime novels, which are set in Iowa.  Donald Harstad is a retired county sheriff from Elkader, Iowa. Drawing from twenty-three years of law enforcement experience, he has written five crime novels starring Deputy Sheriff Carl Houseman, who patrols the towns in and around a fictional Iowa county. Harstad's sixth novel, "November Rain," will be available in September.  Submitted by Anita Neimczyk 4   University of Dubuque Library The new Reference & Instruction Librarian for Education & the Humanities, Sarah Slaughter, will start July 13. She is a recent graduate of UW-Madison’s library school. The University of Dubuque Library has been selected to participate in the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) Consortium on Digital Resources for Teaching and Learning, which is made possible by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.  This grant allows selected colleges to create and store digital resources using Shared Shelf via ArtStor, including participating in workshops with other grant recipients. Jonathan Helmke, University Archivist, and Brian Hallstoos, Assistant Professor of History, are the project administrators.   The University of Dubuque project, “Voices Ahead of the Curve,” consists of oral histories of African American alumni and current students conducted by current UD students. Consortium funding will be used to create a digital repository, and will include transcribing, editing, and providing metadata for the oral histories as well as creating learning aids for this resource.  Submitted by Anne Marie Gruber  Special Libraries News  Iowa Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped NLS New Website That All May Read is the long-standing motto of the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS), Library of Congress, a free library service. People with temporary or permanent low vision, blindness, or other physical disabilities that prevent them from reading or using printed materials can enroll in the braille and talking book program, which offers a wide variety of reading materials at no charge.  The new NLS website, www.loc.gov/ThatAllMayRead, has information about the service and features a video with nine NLS patrons talking about their experiences with the program. The website will be updated regularly, so check back frequently to see what is new. Encourage those who may be eligible for NLS services, or who know people who are, to visit the site and learn more. Spread the word so that all may read.  Summer Reading Program Join us this summer for the Summer Reading Program:  Every Hero Has a Story!  Starting in June, library patrons of all ages can join us for a summer full of reading and fun. Our Children’s Summer Reading Program will begin in June.  Earn prizes for reading and other activities and join us for programs in June with Living History Farms and in July with the Blank Park Zoo.  We will be live streaming the programs so everyone around the state can join us.  We will also have an Adult Summer Reading Program beginning in June.  You too can earn prizes for reading and enjoy Book Discussions.  Watch for more information on the Iowa 5  Department for the Blind’s website under library services.  We have a summer full of great activities planned.  Iowa Digital Books to be Available on BARD You can download Iowa-produced digital titles from BARD, the Braille and Audio Reading Download from NLS.  The National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped Download Site https://nlsbard.loc.gov/IA1A where Library patrons and NLS-certified institutions can access books online. Books from the BARD catalog can be downloaded onto a user's flash drive, computer or other external drive.  We’re just getting started, with fewer than a dozen titles currently, but over time we will be adding Iowa-produced titles that can be downloaded, just like any other title on BARD.  Ask your Reader Advisor how to get started on BARD.  Submitted by Anita Niemczyk   Logo & Marketing Materials Design Award  The Iowa Chapter of the Association of College and Research Libraries announces a one-time Logo & Marketing Materials Design Award for 2015.  The Iowa chapter of ACRL is looking for a fresh logo and offering a reward for the creative mind(s) that design it! This award is intended to encourage the creation of a new logo and optional supplementary marketing materials (pamphlets, postcards, taglines) for the chapter to utilize in future publications and conferences. The award is $100.  The logo should be easily adaptable to different sizes so it can be used on social media, on letterhead, or on other publication and promotional materials. For printed materials, a DPI of 300 or higher would be appropriate. If the logo is adopted by the chapter, copyright ownership of the logo would be transferred from the creator to the association.  The logo and, if you so choose, the optional marketing materials, need to be submitted by October 1st, 2015. Announcement of the winner will occur at the ILA/ACRL business meeting during the ILA Annual Conference along with an unveiling of the new logo.

1  ILA/ACRL Newsletter vol. 25, no. 3, May 2015 Regents Universities Library News  University of Northern Iowa  Rod Library has a new cafe and a 2nd west entrance on the side of the building facing the Campanile plaza.   The Learning Commons project is in phase III.  Rod Library received $212,000 grant money from Roy J. Carver Trust to develop a ScholarSpace and enhance the technologies available in the Digital Media Hub. Both projects will be completed in summer 2015.  Rod Library's media production rooms include computers, software, and equipment to create video, audio, and graphical design projects. In addition, the production rooms include cameras, microphones, green screen technology, lighting units, a telecaster, and a full mixing board.  Rod Library applied for $75,000 to renovate space and pay for equipment to develop a Makerspace.  Money was awarded in December.  A 3D printer and scanner are in place.  Renovations will occur in summer 2015.  Nathan Arndt, the new Museums' Curator, started in December 2014 to oversee the Museums’ collections and overall operations.  Museum collections, staff and furnishings is planned to move to the library from Hudson Road location.  Move to be completed by August 2015.  Rod Library's first credit course, Beyond Google, was offered during the 2015 spring semester, four sections of this course will be offered again in the fall.   UNI ScholarWorks, the new institutional repository, was recently launched to capture and publish the scholarly and creative work of campus. Content upload began with the move of graduate theses and dissertations from CONTENTdm in mid-February.  New theses and dissertations will be directly ingested in UNI ScholarWorks.  We are experimenting with other collections as well.  Rod Library hired Sustainable Collections Services (SCS) to analyze our stacks collections in order to help assess collections to determine appropriate size and scope. Earlier this year Rod Library signed with the Five College Consortium.  UNI Joined the CI-CCI consortium in November of 2014.  The Cedar Valley Library Consortium (CVLC) held a planning meeting in the fall for the development of an ILS RFI. The academic libraries within CVLC chose Ex Libris.  The public libraries within CVLC are still exploring options.  2  Rod Library hosted significantly more cultural programming and scholarly events this year than last year, including Bash in the Stacks, Comic Con, the FORTEPAN Iowa Launch, Around the World in 120 Minutes, movie screenings, book talks, etc.  Northern Iowa’s Comic Con Committee recently received the ACRL CLS Innovation in College Librarianship Award for the Rod Library RodCon event which brought faculty, staff and community members into the library for a day of programs and events, including lectures covering a variety of disciplines from Gender Studies to Communication, inspired by the growing role of graphic novels in the curriculum. Students also presented, with a number of student groups involved in the costume contest and other events.    Rod Library finalized a new 2015-2018 strategic plan with new mission and values statements based on a staff retreat exercise and feedback. The plan was posted recently to the library website.    Rod Library has undergone complete reorganization discussions and implementation.  The Reorganization Task Force completed their work with a report to the Dean in December 2014. Technical Services Consultants' visited in December 2014 to analyze local workflows and provide advice on changes, including those that relate to other departments. After meetings with faculty and staff about interest areas and with the Library Administrators' Council to discuss implementation, Dean Chris Cox recently made an announcement of new assignments and the new organization structure.  Iowa State University  Iowa State University Library will be welcoming a new Dean, Beth McNeil, effective July 15.  Karen Lawson, Associate Dean for Collections and Technical Services, will be retiring. Her last day will be July 1. Lori Kappmeyer will serve as interim Associate Dean effective July 1.  Two new Subject Librarians in the area of Engineering and Physical Science, Erin Thomas and Eric Schares, will be starting June 1. Community Colleges News  Hawkeye Community College  The Hawkeye Community College Library added additional student seating (with USB charging units built in), two computer stations and a built in bookcase to the refurbished area underneath the library’s interior staircase. The result is a pretty attractive area that students gravitate to (see attached picture). This area used to house an assortment of fake plants and a few sculpture pieces.  The sculptures were relocated to other areas for display and the rest of it was disposed of 3  to make way for improvements.  Students, staff and faculty have been very enthusiastic about this upgrade.     Iowa Western Community College   For National Library Week, Iowa Western Community College Library hosted a children’s book drive for the Micah House, a family shelter located in Council Bluffs. They collected 363 books for the shelter in just two short weeks!  Des Moines Area Community College  The DMACC Libraries used the 2014/15 academic year as a pilot period for streaming videos from Swank.  Titles licensed are primarily feature films and include such titles as Zero Dark Thirty, The Good Lie, Lee Daniel’s The Butler, and Pinocchio.  The 75 titles were initially offered only for use in online courses course (via Blackboard) but we quickly discovered the appeal to web-blended and traditional face-to-face classes.  Spring term opened the pilot to all DMACC courses via Blackboard or e-reserve.  The pilot was a success and we’ll offer titles again for the 2015/16 year.  Feel free to check out our guide for more information on this initiative.   The DMACC Libraries offer the One Book One College One Community program each academic year.  The selected title for 2014/15 is Dead Man Walking by Sr. Helen Prejean.  Just over 2,000 copies of the book have been used in conjunction with DMACC courses.  The author, Sr. Helen Prejean, presented at the Boone and Ankeny campuses in November to crowds of 300 and 400, respectively.   4  In April, we began a new subscription to FLIPSTER (e-magazines) and it has been well received.  We began the subscription with just 20 titles and it has been very well received.  We will be adding an additional 14 titles in May.   In February, the Libraries began a review of next generation ILS products.  Currently, we are reviewing responses to our RFI. Private Academic Library News Private Academic Library News  University of Dubuque’s Charles C. Myers Library  At the annual Iowa Private Academic Libraries (IPAL) meeting at Drake on March 19, Jon Helmke led the Archives Interest Group, and Becky Canovan led the Information Literacy Interest Group with Cara Stone (Grand View University).  At ILA/ACRL on March 20, Helmke presented “Everything That Is Old Is New Again: Using the Past to Ensure Our Future” and Canovan and Stone presented “Building Your Instruction Toolkit”.  Jon Helmke partnered with a history faculty member to create an archives display focusing on the 100thanniversary of McCormick Gymnasium.  Anne Marie Gruber coordinated a team of faculty, staff, & students awarded one of 11 national Campus Action Project grants from American Association of University Women (AAUW) & Pantene. The grant supported a campuswide interdisciplinary event, “Melting Gender Roles: Stirring Up Awareness”, held April 8 with approximately 300 in attendance, 150 student volunteers, 30 interactive booths, a panel discussion, and a social justice theater performance.  On April 11, Becky Canovan, Diana Newman, & Katelyn Wolff led a Berenstain Bears storytime with themed crafts, snacks, and activities, for 30 children (ages 2-6) of UD faculty, staff, students, and community members.  Mary Anne Knefel & Diana Newman, with assistance from library staff & a campus committee, coordinated the 3rd annual Apex: Celebration of Student Scholarship and Creativity April 28-30, with student poster projects, research presentations, art displays, and an alumni keynote.  Anne Marie Gruber will give the keynote address for the annual meeting & induction ceremony of the Beta Beta Theta Chapter of Beta Phi Mu (International Library & Information Studies Honor Society) at Mt. Mercy University on May 13. Mary Anne Knefel will give the UD commencement address on May 16.  Katelyn Wolff, Reference & Instruction Librarian for the Humanities & Education, resigned her position April 17. A search is underway for her replacement. 5   We have transitioned to WorldShare Management System and the patron interface will go live around June 1.   Central College  Geisler Library hosted Central College’s fourth Undergraduate Research Symposium on May 5, 2015. This semi-annual event showcases independent research projects, Honors theses, and other significant student research experiences, culminating in more than 100 concurrent presentations taking place throughout the library as a day-long celebration of undergraduate scholarship and creative inquiry.  The Geisler Library Writers Reading series concluded its 2014-15 season with a showcase of student writers featuring students from Prof. Keith Ratzlaff’s Travel Writing course. This reading was presented in conjunction with the semi-annual Undergraduate Research Symposium on May 5, 2015.   Dordt College  During National Library Week, the John and Louise Hulst Library at Dordt College, in participation with the Sioux Center Public Library, held the popular Edible Book Contest on Friday, April 17.  The contest was open to all amateur bakers, cooks, and decorators, and their entries had to refer to a scene or a character from a book, look like a book, or have something to do with books. The winners were announced at the conclusion of the contest.  People’s Choice Award Winner: Cheryl DeHaan for Guardians of the Galaxy/I Am Groot People’s Choice Award Runner‑Up: Kaly Huisman and Emily Visser for The Lorax Judges’ Choice Award Winner: Anna Vander Molen for The Harry Potter series Judges’ Choice Award Runner‑Up: Hannah Culpepper for The Wonderful World of Oz Best Tasting Award Winner: Mary Jo Lee for Orange Marmalade Cake from The Mitford Series Best Tasting Award Runner‑Up: Cindy Nederhoff for the cheesecake representing The Scarlett Letter  Photos from this year’s event can be found at http://on.fb.me/1O8dyVO  6    St. Ambrose University Library  Beth Shoemaker, Cataloging and Resource Access Librarian, celebrated her 1yr anniversary at St. Ambrose University Library on March 4th.  And in the last couple of months, she has been busy networking!  In addition to an active technical services role in the RiverShare multi-type library consortium, she has been appointed to Committee on Cataloging: Description and Access, which sits under the Cataloging and Metadata Management Section, a division of ALCTS /ALA.  With Cornell College’s, Roxy Running, Beth co-convened the inaugural gathering of an interest group for technical services and systems librarians at the IPAL conference earlier this month. Beth is currently attending the conference in Portland as a recipient of an ACRL scholarship. And if that weren’t enough, Beth was recently notified that her paper has been accepted for the Ethics in Knowledge Organization conference in Milwaukee in May.  Leslie Ross, Reference and Instruction Librarian, embraced change and co-presented “From Standards to the Framework: Using Threshold Concepts to Rethink Instruction” with University of Iowa’s Ericka Raber at the ILA/ACRL Spring Conference.  Leslie has been busy scheduling our Information Literacy 101 sections for Fall 2015. Leslie has joined James O’Gorman at the rank of Associate Professor Librarian.  Karly (Steele) Lyle, Media Services Librarian, returned from the Library Technology Conference at Macalester College just in time to attend the ILA/ACRL Spring Conference.  She said the LTC 2015 conference was chock-full of great ideas including an interesting presentation 7  about Macalester College library’s single service desk and a session about open source streaming media options.  Stella Herzig, Reference and Instruction Librarian, partnered with Karly to present “Lights, Camera, Interaction: Visual Literacy and First-year Students” at the ILA/ACRL Spring Conference.  Anita Niemczyk, Reference and Instruction Librarian, and liaison to Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, participated in SAU’s Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day which brought 350 elementary and intermediate school-aged girls to campus in late February.  Anita is continuing coursework for an MBA degree and expects to finish the program in December.  Next, she’s diving into mobile apps for libraries!  Onnica Marquez, University Archivist, has taken the lead role in coordinating SAU Library’s second annual Human Library Day.  After a lot of concerted hard work, students, faculty, staff will be able to choose to read any of nine human books whose stories speak to the College of Arts & Sciences 2015 Theme, Exploring Gender.  Watch St. Ambrose University Library’s Facebook page for more about the event which has been scheduled during National Library Week.  2015 Iowa ACRL Public Relations/Marketing Award  The Iowa Chapter of the Association of College and Research Libraries announces the 2015 Public Relations/Marketing Award.  This award is intended to support creating and implementing a public relations or marketing program in an academic or research library in Iowa. The Award provides a cash grant of $500 to support implementation of the proposed project.  Winners have 12 months to spend the grant monies, and are requested to write an article describing the implementation of the project for the Iowa ACRL Newsletter.  In addition, the winner is encouraged to submit a presentation proposal for the Iowa ACRL Spring conference detailing the project following implementation.  No library may receive the award more than once within 10 years.  The proposal must be submitted by a member of the Iowa ACRL chapter. Submissions due July 31, 2015. 1  ILA/ACRL Newsletter vol. 25, no. 1, January/February 2015 President’s Piece    Welcome to 2015! There are great things in store for ILA-ACRL this year. A special welcome to our new members and our student members! Thank you to Dan Chibnall, who served as President in 2014; as is the custom, he continues as Past President/Chair of our Awards Committee and I am grateful that he is around to show me the ropes! Thank you as well to Ryan Gjerde, who completed 10 years on the ILA/ACRL Board at the end of 2014; this is truly an accomplishment and we have benefitted from his long-term view.  A few important things to be aware of as we start the year:  The ILA/ACRL Spring Conference will be held March 20, 2015 at Drake University in Des Moines.  The theme is “Bold Moves: New Connections”.  The call for presentation proposals is available at the following link:  http://www.iowaacrl.org/content/conference/2015/proposals.  Thank you to Liz Kiscaden, Chair, as well as all members of the Spring Conference Committee, who are working hard to plan a successful conference!  We are excited that our keynote speaker will be Michael Scott, our new State Librarian. You’ll notice the date is earlier than in the past few years; this enabled us to book a great conference location and it also allows us to encourage library science students to attend as it is University of Iowa’s spring break. Note that again we are partnering with the Iowa Private Academic Libraries (IPAL), which will hold their conference the previous day, also at Drake. Start thinking positive weather-related thoughts! 2   One area of focus for the Board this year is information literacy. Due to the sunsetting of the K-12/Higher Ed Ad Hoc committee at the end of 2015, I have appointed an IL Task Force, which includes Ericka Raber (chair), Sara Scheib, and Pam Rees. They will be gathering information and providing a recommendation to the Board regarding how to continue the IL assessment pilot project, how to partner effectively with the Iowa Association of School Librarians to support K-12 library programs, and how to provide professional development opportunities regarding information literacy to our members.  Another area of focus is increasing membership numbers. Please help us ensure the continued strength of our organization by encouraging membership among your colleagues. In addition, ILA/ACRL’s success relies on your active involvement; nearly half of the association’s members need to serve on committees or the Board in order for our group to function! The Nominating Committee, chaired by Vice President/President-Elect Sara Scheib, will soon be requesting volunteers and nominees for various positions. Please consider volunteering, agreeing to serve if contacted, or nominating someone. It is truly telling when many Board members, upon ending their terms, ask to continue in some role. It’s a great group of creative, dedicated, and fun librarians. Most work is done virtually.  Don’t hesitate to contact me or any Board member (listed at: http://www.iowaacrl.org/content/about/people) if you have suggestions for the association. The group is what we make it! Anne Marie Gruber, University of Dubuque     3  Mary Hammond Iber Iowa ACRL Spring Conference Scholarship    Mary Hammond Iber was an exceptional librarian, mentor, and friend.  A librarian and archivist at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, she died unexpectedly on January 2, 2014. Mary was known for her kind, creative, and helpful nature and her vibrant approach to life. She taught as an adjunct instructor at the University of Iowa School of Library and Information Science and was involved with Iowa ACRL leadership, including serving as President in 2010 and chairing the Nominating, Awards, and Newsletter committees.  4  To honor her commitment to continuous learning and growth, Iowa ACRL makes available the Mary Hammond Iber Spring Conference Scholarship. The scholarship will help fund attendance at the Iowa ACRL Spring Conference, March 20th, 2015 at Drake University in Des Moines. The scholarship will cover the registration fee and up to $100 in travel, hotel, and meal expenses.  Applicants must be either:  1) Paid members of Iowa ACRL, working full-time in an Iowa academic or research library, and either:  Attending their first Iowa ACRL Conference, or have worked in an Iowa academic or research library for fewer than three years.  OR  2) Library science students and/or support staff working in an Iowa academic or research library. Student and support staff applicants do not have to be paid members of Iowa ACRL.  Previous Iowa ACRL Spring Conference scholarship recipients are NOT eligible. Dan Chibnall, Grand View University, Awards Committee Chair    5  Regents Universities Library News  University of Northern Iowa Rod Library Mini-ComicCon 2015    The date is set for the 2nd annual Rod Con at the Rod Library. This year's event will be held Saturday, March 28, from 11-4 p.m. There will be artists, panel presentations, a costume contest, and new for this year: a special Kidzone full of crafts and activities for our younger patrons! The new certificate, approved in the spring of 2014, provides students with core technical training in the use of digital platforms and the creation of digital projects, which focus on increasing the public’s engagement with humanities works and ideas.  It also provides students context for understanding digital humanities work and its applications  Digital humanities techniques create new insights as scholars explore issues too complex or too large for traditional humanities methods. Computational approaches to humanities research allow us to create new visualizations that convey very complex relationships and ideas in easily accessible ways. History, anthropology, religion, philosophy, language, art, music and literature can become newly accessible for a largely digitally-engaged public through imaginative multimedia formats delivered through mobile applications, websites, games and virtual environments. The University of Iowa Public Digital Humanities Certificate program provides formal structure and credit for graduate students to forward their academic careers and specialize in this exciting new area of research. Early on the bitterly cold morning of January 5, 2015, approximately 800 boxes of materials spanning Tom Harkin’s 40-year (1975-2015) Congressional career arrived at Cowles Library.    The Harkin Collection is the centerpiece of the rapidly developing Political Papers Collection at Drake University.  In addition to the papers of Senator Harkin, the collections consist of the papers of former Representative Neil Smith and selected items from Governor Robert D. Ray's career.     Shown in the photo is Hope Grebner, the Political Papers Archivist, who will be managing the Harkin materials.    8   Clarke University Our Literature faculty, Ann Pelelo, recently got a $1,000 grant from the Northeast Asia Council of the Association for Asian Studies and the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission for the library to buy books, DVDs, and instructional materials about Japanese culture.  They are being used this semester for an interdisciplinary course on Japanese culture that is being taught by faculty from the art, religious studies, history, literature, philosophy, and sociology departments.  Hawkeye Community College The Hawkeye Community College Library implemented two collaborative learning study rooms in August 2014. Each room contains a 55 inch TV monitor and network connections for up to four different devices, including iPads, pc laptops, MacBooks, smartphones, etc.  Students who may need an HDMI adapter may check them out at the circulation desk.  The library uses Springshare’s LibCal room booking software to allow online reservations of these rooms and the other six study rooms.    Western Iowa Tech Community College Western Iowa Tech Community College Library has said goodbye to Charles LeMaster, a 50 year veteran in the Sioux City Libraries. Charles worked as the Director of the Morningside College Library for 27 years before retiring.  Retirement couldn’t hold him down long.  A year later, Charles stated working for Western Iowa Tech Community College Library and stayed for another 24 years.  Western Iowa Tech’s Library has since hired two new library staff.  Alexandra Patnaud from Sioux City joins us during the day and Tyler Hahn from Marcus, Iowa joins us in the evenings.  Central College Geisler Library is pleased to welcome Mary E. Anderson as Integrated Learning Librarian. Mary previously worked at Gustavus Adolphus College where she was visiting Academic Librarian with an emphasis on reference and instruction. As Integrated Learning Librarian, she will be involved in research assistance & reference, instruction, and assessment to support Central College’s integrated learning initiative.  We also said bon voyage and farewell to Reference Assistant Greg Teets (Central College ’14) as he departed for Malaysia to teach English through the Fulbright English Teaching Assistant program.  Geisler Library hosted Central College’s third Undergraduate Research Symposium on December 11, 2014. This semi-annual event showcases independent research projects, Honors theses, and other significant student research experiences, culminating in more than 100 concurrent presentations taking place throughout the library as a day-long celebration of undergraduate research and creative inquiry. 9   The Geisler Library Writers Reading series features the following writers during its 2014-2015 season:  Novelist Chitra Divakaruni, author of One Amazing Thing and Oleander Girl, among other works; Poet Matt Rasmussen, author of the award-winning collection Black Aperture; Journalist Kyle Munson from the Des Moines Register; Memoirist Tim Bascom, Director of Creative Writing at Waldorf College and author of Chameleon Days: An American Boyhood in Ethiopia (March 26, 2015); Poet and Professor of English at Central College, Keith Ratzlaff (February 19, 2015).  Kyle Winward represented Geisler Library at the Iowa Innovative Users Group (IAIUG) meeting at Urbandale Public Library on September 19, 2014.  Together with colleagues from the Central College faculty and Writing Center, Library Director Beth McMahon co-authored the article “An Embedded Model: First-Year Student Success in Writing and Research”, recently published in Praxis: A Writing Center Journal 12.1 (2014).  Beth McMahon joined the 2014-15 cohort of the ACRL College Library Directors’ Mentor Program. Jill Jack, Director of Stewart Memorial Library at Coe College, will be her mentor throughout this academic year.  St. Ambrose University New Resource Access and Cataloging Librarian Elizabeth [Beth] Shoemaker assumed her duties as the Resource Access and Cataloging Librarian at St. Ambrose University in June 2014. In addition to her normal catalog duties, Beth will also be teaching Information Literacy classes. She also has an advanced degree in Music. Beth and her husband are passionate about hand-made books.  New Archivist Onnica Marquez assumed her duties as the Archivist at St. Ambrose University in May 2014. Onnica has a Master’s degree in Museum Studies from Western Illinois University. She also works part-time at the Putnam Museum. She and her husband also enjoy ballroom dancing in their spare time.  Therapy Dogs during Finals Week Finals week has always been one of the most stressful times during the academic year. In addition to providing students with snacks such as coffee and cookies, St. Ambrose University Library has also been providing students with a little TLC courtesy of therapy dogs. The dogs came to the Library for three nights during Finals Week, at two different times each night. Thanks to the Caring Canines program and Pawsitive Hearts student group, students had the opportunity to visit with these cuddly pups!   10    Special Libraries News  Iowa Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped The Iowa Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped provides books, magazines, and other materials in Braille, audio, and large print formats to Iowans who cannot use standard print. Materials circulate by mail, free of charge, or can be downloaded at the patron’s convenience. • Books and magazines in audio, Braille, large print and descriptive videos • Playback equipment for audio materials • Transcription of print materials to Braille and audio formats for instructional, employment, and leisure use • Independent access to the Library’s collection through the On-Line Public Access Catalog • Download on Demand service for audio materials • BARD (Braille and Audio Reading Download)   New Library Director Sarah Willeford assumed her duties as the new Library Director in February 2014.  Sarah is the past-president of the Iowa Library Association and she has been the director at public libraries in Clarinda and Ankeny.  She has enjoyed her first year with the library.   Library Resource Center The Library Resource Center now has an iMac laptop, a 3D Printer and a Digitizer 3D Scanner thanks to funds provided by the Friends of the Library for the Blind.  Patrons can use the iMac for running Apple programs, browsing the Web and trying out new apps.  It also runs the 3D printer and Digitizer which will be used for creating three-dimensional tactile graphics for 11  students and patrons.  Also, in the Resource Center is a PC with Window, Braille Display, printer and scanner.   Braille Challenge Event Students throughout Iowa, in grades 1st-12th, will test their skills at the Iowa Braille Challenge on Saturday February 7th.  Held at the Iowa Department for the Blind building in Des Moines and co-sponsored by the Iowa Braille School and the Iowa Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped.  This annual event gives Iowa students a chance to shine!  Students will demonstrate their Braille skills in the areas of reading and comprehension, speed and accuracy, spelling, proofreading, and tactile graphics.

1  ILA/ACRL Newsletter vol. 24, no. 2, March/April 2014 Regents Universities Library News  The University of Iowa Libraries The University of Iowa Libraries began the fall 2013 semester by showing off its new Learning Commons (LC), transformed from first floor staff work space to an active and collaborative 37,000 square feet learning space. The Main Library Learning Commons is a tech-infused, comfortable and flexible learning space and one-stop academic and information help center. The LC was designed to support undergraduate student success, both inside and outside of the classroom, through the use of technology, space, services, and resources.  The facility includes space for groups. Students can work collaboratively on group projects in one of the 24 group study spaces within the LC or in the newly expanded Food for Thought Café. The Learning Commons has 18 private group rooms and 6 open group areas, all with writable wall surfaces, with monitors where students can share work and collaborate on projects. These spaces can be reserved online or in person, and the entire facility is available for student use 24 hours 5 days a week during the academic year. Faculty have also made use of these spaces by bringing their classes in for one-shot library instruction or to hold class presentations.  The Learning Commons also has space for individual study replete with modern technology amenities and high quality assistance with information and technology resources. Students have plenty of electrical outlets and a variety of beautiful, modern and comfortable workspaces to choose from where they can work individually at one of 90 dual-monitor computers or on a laptop checked out at the Main Library Service Desk.  The location of this new space within the Main Library gives students easy access to library resources and research support. The building contains a single service desk centrally located and is staffed 24 hours 5 days a week. Students can check out a variety of technologies including laptops and cords needed to use the monitors in the group rooms. Service Desk staff can facilitate referrals for academic support outside of the Libraries, for example, referring students to the Writing Center or Academic Advising. Students can check out library materials, and get expert research help by making an appointment with one of our research librarians or they can just drop by the research consultation spaces near the service desk and talk to someone right then and there. These two stations have dual-monitor computers and plenty of work space so they can actually roll up their sleeves and get some work done with a librarian by their side.  Collaboration was key in designing and building this new learning space. The Learning Commons was a result of a partnership between the University Libraries, Information Technology Services and the Office of the Provost. Collaboration continues to be important to 2  the success of the Learning Commons. The Main Library Learning Commons offers to a wide variety of programming developed by librarians and other academic partners on campus.  The Main Library Learning Commons holds new space to support the academic success of the students at the University of Iowa.  We continue to evaluate the needs of our users, particularly how they are using the space and what space is still needed, particularly quiet study. For more information and pictures, please visit http://www.lib.uiowa.edu/commons/  Authors: Kathy Magarrell, Amy Paulus, & Brittney Thomas Private Academic Library News  Changing spaces: transforming Dunn Library into Simpson’s academic hub We are in year five of intentional, incremental changes to build academic community. To encourage collaboration & innovation, we provide services to meet the changing learning & teaching needs of students and faculty and shared spaces outside of classrooms & labs with technology tools that encourage discovery.  2008-09: We surveyed the Simpson community using LibQUAL+ to assess and improve library services. From those responses, specific improvements began. In 2009-10 two glass study rooms were built, and electrical outlets were added along with café height tables and chairs plus beverage and snack machines. In 2009-10 two additional group study rooms were added along with reducing the reference collection and painting many public spaces.  2010-11: A library program review resulted in the ‘Dunn Library: visioning our future’ report with 16 recommendations; eight of these centered around space. The report also applauded the new Simpson Engaged Citizenship curriculum, with its Embedded Skills including Information Literacy. In 2011-12 we brought in a great space consultant team developed by FEH. After collection of many data elements and focus group responses, we were presented with a vision study which included a building assessment, programming plan and concept design.  3              2012-13: Teacher Education Labs were developed from two second floor classroom spaces and the adjacent curriculum lab remodeled and textbook collection weeded. It is a hands-on learning space with resources and methods classrooms together-- available for group study outside of class times. On the first floor, students can practice with classroom technologies in the new TechStudy (with SmartBoard, multimedia projector, document camera, etc.) or practice & film presentations or view videos, DVDs and streaming video in the new Presentation & Media Study. In these spaces, we advertised other equipment for check-out: laptops (for in-library use), student response system, camcorder/tripod, flip cameras, and headphones. Portable whiteboards are available along with more study space with a reduction in our print journals.      4         2013-14: We are developing three new areas on the first floor: Research Assistance Center (former Media Services office), Writing Center and EMERGE, the college business incubator. Videotapes were withdrawn, journals re-shelved, circulation counter shortened, reference desk unit remodeled and repurposed, shelving shifted and space is awaiting glass walls.  2014-15: We will start reducing our monograph collection (thanks to the CI-CCI collaborative) to develop additional quiet study space. A remodeled college archives will be possible due to a gift towards historical preservation.  Cyd Dyer, College Librarian, Simpson College   St. Ambrose Library: Creation of new offices for the Center for Instructional Design and Technology The St. Ambrose Library has begun renovations to create new offices for the Center for Instructional Design and Technology, with an aim at moving them into the library by May. This consolidation will bring CIDT into closer collaboration with the Information Technology department, as well as with the library. In addition, the merging of CIDT’s media equipment 5  with the existing Media Services collection enhances the library’s ability to provide media production help for faculty and students. We’re very excited to take advantage of the possibilities that transforming our existing library space will provide.  We’re also pleased to introduce the newest member of our staff, Beth Shoemaker. Beth is assuming the role of Cataloging & Resource Access librarian. She’s taught at locations as close as Millikin University in Decatur, as far away as Mahidol University in Thailand, and her favorite cataloging moment has been providing access to a 15th century joke book. We look forward to making use of her broad skill set within and outside the classroom.  By: Conrad Bendixen, Reference and Instruction Librarian Private Academic Library News: More News  Buena Vista University Library: The University’s first Archives The Buena Vista University Library has opened the University’s first Archives.  Book collections were shifted on the second floor of the library during the summer of 2012 to make room for the Archives. Construction on the Archives started in March 2013 and was completed this past fall.  The Archives project includes an approximately 800 square feet climate-controlled collections area and an adjacent workroom.  The BVU Archives is now processing its first archival collections as the125th anniversary of Buena Vista’s founding approaches in 2016.  Future plans call for the addition of an Archives Reading Room which will complete the Archives construction project.    Archive Collections Room                   Archives Workroom  By: Jodie Morin 6  Des Moines University: Library renovation and open house  Natalie Hutchinson, Director, reports DMU is just finishing up a library renovation here, and will be having an open house to celebrate in late April.   The renovation included new staff workspaces, in particular a new circulation desk, a redesigned circulation area, and new staff offices.   In student areas, we will now have additional seating, a large conference room, four new small group study rooms, and a media room.    Finally, they will have new neighbors—DMU’s Center for the Improvement of Teaching and Learning is moving into a new space created in the library especially for them.   They’re very excited about our new space, and for the opportunities for collaboration that having the CITL in the library provides!   Drake University: Opening of the Speaking Center in Cowles Library Marc Davis, Program, Planning & Projects Specialist reports that the new Speaking Center in Cowles Library opened March 3.  Students can book appointments online to see a tutor for help in preparing, composing, and delivering speeches and presentations. Students, faculty, and staff members can reserve the Speaking Studio to practice, record and review their speeches or presentations alone or in small groups.  The Library provides assistance in setting up equipment and transferring recordings. This new facility resulted from a three-way collaboration among the Library, Drake’s Office of Information Technology and Dr. Joan McAlister, Professor of Rhetoric and Communication Studies. Laura earned her MLS at Indiana University in 2012.   University of Dubuque: Creation of the exhibit “Racing Past the Color Line: Sol Butler and Paul Robeson in Collegiate Athletics” Mary Anne Knefel reports that Jonathan Helmke, Archivist and Assistant Director for Library Automation, along with Brian Hallstoos, Assistant Professor of History, created the exhibit “Racing Past the Color Line: Sol Butler and Paul Robeson in Collegiate Athletics.” In 1913, both Butler and Robeson entered college in 1913, Butler at UD and Robeson at Rutgers. Both were gifted at several sports and were among the first African Americans to play college athletics. This exhibit was displayed in the Bisignano Art Gallery in the Heritage Center from February 24-April 4. After April 4, the library plans to install it as a semi-permanent exhibit. 7  2014 ILA/ACRL Spring Conference  Breaking Down Our Silos:  Redefining Academic Libraries in the 21st Century SILO is a word that has been discussed in business for over 30 years now, so, while not a new question, as academic libraries shift away from physical models to more digital ones, we find ourselves frequently confronting the problems created by the silo mentality inherent in subject specialization and highly technical work. How do we become more nimble in responding to changing environments and needs? How do we get involved outside our libraries? Do we need to create more empowered staff and more integrated and collaborative work arrangements? What is the best response of the academic library and academic librarians to this problem?   Join your fellow ILA/ACRL members at the annual Spring Conference Friday, May 2, 2014, at the FFA Enrichment Center, DMACC-Ankeny. The conference features keynote speaker Bobbi Newman - “Escape the Silo: Why and How to Escape Your Professional Silo” and a wide variety of presentations from fellow colleagues. The Spring Conference committee has worked hard to put this conference together.  The Spring Conference is being held in conjunction with the annual IPAL conference, which is Thursday, May 1st at Grand View University in Des Moines.  IPAL has invited ILA/ACRL members to a Happy Hour at Dos Rios Mexican Restaurant on Court Avenue, Thursday from 4:30 to 6:30.  We also continue the annual tradition of the Dine-Around, visiting a variety of restaurants for dinner and conversation with fellow librarians. ILA/ACRL’s Research Award  Announcing the ILA/ACRL’s Research Award The ILA/ACRL Awards Committee announces a $500 grant to be awarded to an ILA/ACRL member for a presented or published scholarly work. Please consider submitting your own work or nominating a colleague for this award! The following rules and qualifications apply:  • A qualifying presented paper must be text-based and have been delivered at a regional, national, or international conference. 8  • A qualifying published paper is to have appeared in a scholarly journal. • A qualifying book is to be scholarly in nature. • The subject matter of the material submitted may be on any scholarly topic. • The papers should have been delivered or published since October of 2011. • Power point slides, video, or audio submissions will not be considered. • Entries may be self-submitted or nominated. • Entries will be considered by the Awards Committee on the basis of a blind ranking process. • If the committee finds that none of the entries are meritorious, it may decide not to make an award. • The deadline for submissions is Friday, April 24th, 2014.
