Enhanced e-learning and simulation for obstetrics education
Background: In medicine, new media technologies have been used in recent years to simulate situations and techniques that may not be common enough for students to experience in reality or may not be visible to the naked eye. Especially in areas of medicine focusing on important surgeries or procedures, these simulated designs could train students and ultimately prevent possible risk or morbidity. Aims: The aim of this thesis was to develop a multipurpose hybrid educational resource based on a physical/software driven simulator platform enabling the use of multimedia properties like 3D and video to enhance the educational training of obstetrics students through haptic interactions. All of this content was enabled by the learning preferences of the obstetric students involved. Method: The learning resource was developed using a combination of student learning preference, online learning content, 3D, video, human patient simulations and sensor technology interaction. These mediums were all interconnected to create a multipurpose resource. The learning preference was collected through a developed student online survey, the results consequently informed the creation of the other aspects of the finished resource. The interactive aspects were created through position and orientation sensors and the 3D/video influences which localised the position and orientation of an object like a fetal model relative to a human patient simulator. All of these methods combined with added assessment contributions for obstetric tutors, enabled the finalising of a prototype. Conclusion: This form of learning resource has a vital role in the progressing higher level education in the digital age. This proposal is the development of a new type of joint simulator that allows students and practitioners physically involve themselves in a series of processes while assessing their own progression through real time digital feedback in the form of video narrative and analytics. Usability test was not conducted on the full resource (one on the video platform) due to time limitations

Use of an advance organizer in the ill-structured problem domain of information seeking : a comparative case study
Includes bibliographical references (pages [141]-149).In open-ended learning environments, learners need to formulate questions, identify needs and find relevant resources. Finding relevant resources is an information-seeking problem, a type of ill-structured problem that can benefit from research studies that focus on ways to promote metacognitive skills. The purpose of this study was to investigate and compare the effectiveness of an advance organizer containing question prompts in information seeking in terms of problem-solving strategies, metacognitive facilitation, and search results for college students. Researching design elements that could be effective in these problemsolving environments could also benefit other learning environments that share the similar characteristics of being ill-structured or open-ended. Six graduate students volunteered and participated in this comparative case study. The participants were randomly divided into two groups: one group searched an instructional technology open-ended problem using a print-based advance organizer and the other searched the same problem without the instructional aid. Data collected from talk-aloud audio recordings, video screen captures, and follow-up interviews were analyzed for themes and patterns. The results of this study support the ability of question prompts to facilitate questioning and reflection during the information-seeking problem-solving process. The advance organizer caused participants to slow down and think about their search, particularly in the beginning and end of the search process. Based on the results of the study, design recommendations for the advance organizer and search interfaces have been proposed. Common themes in searching strategies such as concern for finding the right key words and progressive refinement were supported but the effects of unfamiliar or unintuitive aspects of the searching environment demonstrated how these issues play a major role in searchersâ overall experience even with an instructional intervention. The instructional aid in its current design may be more effective as an exercise, worked problem, or with explicit instructions; however, as a self-instructing instructional aid, user characteristics played a major role in how the instrument was used. This user perspective is a recommended focus of future studies.Ed.D. (Doctor of Education

The therapeutic relationship and its links to emotional intelligence
The importance of emotional intelligence (EI) as a theoretical construct to understand human emotions has become quite prominent over the last two decades. However, the concept of EI has not been frequently applied to the therapeutic setting. This study investigated the role that EI plays in therapy, the therapistâs perspective of trait EI in his or her work, and the meaning of the therapeutic relationship from therapistsâ perspectives. From interviewing 12 counselling psychologists and therapists, and analysing their responses using a grounded theory approach. The main themes that emerged from the data collected were empathetic balance, benevolent connection and mindfulness. Within these themes a number of findings were established. Most EI traits appear to be present within the therapy setting, albeit not in an overtly conscious way. There was also a sense that EI cannot adequately explain or describe the subtle yet very real emotional connection and empathy that the therapist and the client share and experience. From these findings, I present various recommendations for future research to explore the relevance of EI in the therapeutic setting. One suggestion is to explore the differences between ability and trait EI within the therapeutic relationship while another recommends development of appropriate EI teaching modules for psychotherapy training purposes
Scientific methods: an online book
BookThis book was originally intended as ËHow to do scienceâą, or ËHow to be a scientistâą, providing guidance for the new scientist, as well as some reminders and tips for experienced researchers. Such a book does not need to be written by the most expert or most famous scientist, but by one who likes to see the rules of play laid out concisely. It does need to be written by a working scientist, not by a philosopher of science. The first half of the book, called ËScientist's Toolbox", retains this original focus on what Jerome Brumer called the structure of science -- its methodologies and logic. This objective is still present in the second half of the book, ËLiving Science". In researching that section, however, I was fascinated by the perspectives of fellow scientists on ËWhat it is like to be a scientist." Encountering their insights into the humanity of science, I found resonance with my already intense enjoyment of the process of science. Gaither and Cavazon-Gaither [2000] provide many additional scientific quotations on the experience of science
The Textile Archive: curating personal histories and family narratives
Textiles are a ubiquitous facet of global culture, with the potential to become records of significant relationships, events, and stories over their lifetime. This research project investigates textiles which have been informally gathered together, and kept within the home, for their emotional or symbolic resonance. No longer used for their designed function, these textiles are saved from disposal for their ability to prompt personal and family histories and stories, in a phenomenon identified within the study as the personal textile archive.
Textile design research is increasingly concerned with incorporating interdisciplinary social and cultural frameworks within its traditional research fields of technology, innovation and creativity, to frame a textile's socio-cultural relevance. This shift in the field requires the development of specific textile design research tools which are capable of producing purposeful research which analyses the material and designed properties of textiles in relation to their symbolic or affective experience, in order to understand the user-experience of a textile.
Phenomenological research methods are established as tools for investigating phenomena and lived experience from a first-person perspective, which the investigation of the personally significant textiles within this study requires. A particular method, interpretative phenomenological analysis, has been specifically adapted for textile design research, and it is demonstrated within this research project that is is able to investigate and analyse the personal textile archive, producing original insights into this phenomenon. Through this application of this adaptation of interpretative phenomenological analysis, the design, affordances and craftsmanship of
a textile are revealed as interweaving with its emotional, sentimental, biographical orfamily historical meaning. This is a useful and important original contribution to textile design research, and the recommendation is made that other researchers in the field will be able to utilise and further test this tool within future textile design research studies
Maritime expressions:a corpus based exploration of maritime metaphors
This study uses a purpose-built corpus to explore the linguistic legacy of Britainâs maritime history found in the form of hundreds of specialised âMaritime Expressionsâ (MEs), such as TAKEN ABACK, ANCHOR and ALOOF, that permeate modern English. Selecting just those expressions commencing with âAâ, it analyses 61 MEs in detail and describes the processes by which these technical expressions, from a highly specialised occupational discourse community, have made their way into modern English. The Maritime Text Corpus (MTC) comprises 8.8 million words, encompassing a range of text types and registers, selected to provide a cross-section of âmaritimeâ writing. It is analysed using WordSmith analytical software (Scott, 2010), with the 100 million-word British National Corpus (BNC) as a reference corpus. Using the MTC, a list of keywords of specific salience within the maritime discourse has been compiled and, using frequency data, concordances and collocations, these MEs are described in detail and their use and form in the MTC and the BNC is compared. The study examines the transformation from ME to figurative use in the general discourse, in terms of form and metaphoricity. MEs are classified according to their metaphorical strength and their transference from maritime usage into new registers and domains such as those of business, politics, sports and reportage etc. A revised model of metaphoricity is developed and a new category of figurative expression, the âresonatorâ, is proposed. Additionally, developing the work of Lakov and Johnson, Kovesces and others on Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT), a number of Maritime Conceptual Metaphors are identified and their cultural significance is discussed
