Image-Processing Techniques for the Creation of Presentation-Quality Astronomical Images
The quality of modern astronomical data, the power of modern computers and
the agility of current image-processing software enable the creation of
high-quality images in a purely digital form. The combination of these
technological advancements has created a new ability to make color astronomical
images. And in many ways it has led to a new philosophy towards how to create
them. A practical guide is presented on how to generate astronomical images
from research data with powerful image-processing programs. These programs use
a layering metaphor that allows for an unlimited number of astronomical
datasets to be combined in any desired color scheme, creating an immense
parameter space to be explored using an iterative approach. Several examples of
image creation are presented.
A philosophy is also presented on how to use color and composition to create
images that simultaneously highlight scientific detail and are aesthetically
appealing. This philosophy is necessary because most datasets do not correspond
to the wavelength range of sensitivity of the human eye. The use of visual
grammar, defined as the elements which affect the interpretation of an image,
can maximize the richness and detail in an image while maintaining scientific
accuracy. By properly using visual grammar, one can imply qualities that a
two-dimensional image intrinsically cannot show, such as depth, motion and
energy. In addition, composition can be used to engage viewers and keep them
interested for a longer period of time. The use of these techniques can result
in a striking image that will effectively convey the science within the image,

Using printer ink color to control the behavior of paper microfluidics.
Paper microfluidic devices (including lateral flow assays) offer an excellent combination of utility and low cost. Many paper microfluidic devices are fabricated using the Xerox ColorQube line of commercial wax-based color printers; the wax ink serves as a hydrophobic barrier to fluid flow. These printers are capable of depositing four different colors of ink, cyan (C), magenta (M), yellow (Y), and black (K), plus 11 combinations of these colors (CM, CY, CK, MY, MK, YK, CMY, CMK, CYK, MYK, and CMYK), although most researchers use only black ink to print paper microfluidic devices. Recently, as part of a project to develop a computer-aided design framework for use with paper microfluidics devices, we unexpectedly observed that different colors of wax ink behave differently in paper microfluidics. We found that among the single colors of ink, black ink actually had the most barrier failures, and magenta ink had the fewest barrier failures. In addition, some combinations of colors performed even better than magenta: the combinations CY, MK, YK, CMY, CYK and MYK had no barrier failures in our study. We also found that the printer delivers significantly different amounts of ink to the paper for the different color combinations, and in general, the color combinations that formed the strongest barriers to fluid flow were the ones that had the most ink delivered to the paper. This suggests that by simply weighing paper samples printed with all 15 combinations of colors, one can easily find the color combinations most likely to form a strong barrier for a given printer. Finally, to show that deliberate choices of ink colors can actually be used to create new functions in paper microfluidics, we designed and tested a new color-based "antifuse" structure that protects paper microfluidic devices from a typical operator error (addition of too much fluid to the device). Influence of silicone oil tamponade after vitrectomy on intraocular pressure [Tamponada silikonskim uljem i njezin utjecaj na vrijednosti intraokularnog tlaka]
The aim of this prospective study was to determine the possible influence of the silicone oil tamponade after vitrectomy on the early intraocular pressure (IOP) elevation, which is a major risk factor for developing secondary glaucoma in patients with vitreal and retinal proliferative changes. The research included 110 patients which were allocated in three groups according to the medical history data. The surgical procedures were performed at the Eye Clinic, University of Zagreb School of Medicine. The control group comprised 40 patients who underwent vitrectomy with air or saline solution tamponade. The second group consisted of 40 patients with retinal detachment and proliferative retinopathy who had vitrectomy with silicone oil tamponade and the third group were 30 patients with diabetic retinopathy who underwent vitrectomy and tamponade with silicone oil. The intraocular pressure was measured and gonioscopy was performed in all patients one month before and after vitrectomy. The results showed that there is no statistically significant difference among IOP values before and after vitrectomy in the control group (p = 0.104) as well as in the preoperative IOP values among all three groups of patients. The data analysis determined that in both groups of patients with silicone oil tamponade after vitrectomy, there is a statistically significant difference in IOP values one month after the surgical procedure (p = 0.000). The mean IOP values in those patients a month after vitrectomy were significantly higher compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Comparison of the IOP one month after vitrectomy between the patients with retinal detachment and those with diabetic retinopathy showed no statistically significant difference (p = 0.331) but the qualitative analysis showed that the IOP one month after vitrectomy was 2 mmHg higher in the diabetic retinopathy group. The results suggest that there is no difference in angle width before and after vitrectomy among different groups of patients. Emulsified silicone oil was confirmed in 18% of patients in the retinal detachment group. In 17% of patients in the diabetic retinopathy group the emulsified oil was found in the angle, whereas a 10% of patients had neovascularization of the angle one month after vitrectomy. The IOP elevation in the early postoperative course may be caused by intravitreal instillation of the silicone oil after vitrectomy. Emulsification of the silicone oil may lead to the early IOP rise; especially in the diabetic patients with angle neovascularization which itself can additionally accelerate the development of the secondary glaucoma
Challenges for health care development in Croatia [Izazovi razvoja zdravstvenog sustava Republike Hrvatske]
The main aim of the research done in this paper was to establish key challenges and perspectives for health care development in the Republic of Croatia in the next two decades. Empirical research was conducted in the form of semi-structured interviews involving 49 subjects, representatives of health care professionals from both, public and private sectors, health insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies, drug wholesalers, and non-governmental organisations (patient associations). The results have shown that key challenges and problems of Croatian health care can be divided into three groups: functioning of health care systems, health care personnel, and external factors. Research has shown that key challenges related to the functioning of health care are inefficiency, financial unviability, inadequate infrastructure, and the lack of system transparency. Poor governance is another limiting factor. With regard to health care personnel, they face the problems of low salaries, which then lead to migration challenges and a potential shortage of health care personnel. The following external factors are deemed to be among the most significant challenges: ageing population, bad living habits, and an increase in the number of chronic diseases. However, problems caused by the global financial crisis and consequential macroeconomic situation must not be neglected. Guidelines for responding to challenges identified in this research are the backbone for developing a strategy for health care development in the Republic of Croatia. Long-term vision, strategy, policies, and a regulatory framework are all necessary preconditions for an efficient health care system and more quality health services
