Near real-time flood detection in urban and rural areas using high resolution Synthetic Aperture Radar images
A near real-time flood detection algorithm giving a synoptic overview of the extent of flooding in both urban and rural areas, and capable of working during night-time and day-time even if cloud was present, could be a useful tool for operational flood relief management. The paper describes an automatic algorithm using high resolution Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite data that builds on existing approaches, including the use of image segmentation techniques prior to object classification to cope with the very large number of pixels in these scenes. Flood detection in urban areas is guided by the flood extent derived in adjacent rural areas. The algorithm assumes that high resolution topographic height data are available for at least the urban areas of the scene, in order that a SAR simulator may be used to estimate areas of radar shadow and layover. The algorithm proved capable of detecting flooding in rural areas using TerraSAR-X with good accuracy, classifying 89% of flooded pixels correctly, with an associated false positive rate of 6%. Of the urban water pixels visible to TerraSAR-X, 75% were correctly detected, with a false positive rate of 24%. If all urban water pixels were considered, including those in shadow and layover regions, these figures fell to 57% and 18% respectively

High-resolution optical and SAR image fusion for building database updating
This paper addresses the issue of cartographic database (DB) creation or updating using high-resolution synthetic aperture radar and optical images. In cartographic applications, objects of interest are mainly buildings and roads. This paper proposes a processing chain to create or update building DBs. The approach is composed of two steps. First, if a DB is available, the presence of each DB object is checked in the images. Then, we verify if objects coming from an image segmentation should be included in the DB. To do those two steps, relevant features are extracted from images in the neighborhood of the considered object. The object removal/inclusion in the DB is based on a score obtained by the fusion of features in the framework of Dempster–Shafer evidence theory

Multispectral object segmentation and retrieval in surveillance video
This paper describes a system for object segmentation and feature extraction for surveillance video. Segmentation is performed by a dynamic vision system that fuses information from thermal infrared video with standard CCTV video in order to detect and track objects. Separate background modelling in each modality and dynamic mutual information based thresholding are used to provide initial foreground candidates for tracking. The belief in the validity of these candidates is ascertained using knowledge of foreground pixels and temporal linking of candidates. The transferable belief model is used to combine these sources of information and segment objects. Extracted objects are subsequently tracked using adaptive thermo-visual appearance models. In order to facilitate search and classification of objects in large archives, retrieval features from both modalities are extracted for tracked objects. Fast Shadow Detection from a Single Image Using a Patched Convolutional Neural Network
In recent years, various shadow detection methods from a single image have
been proposed and used in vision systems; however, most of them are not
appropriate for the robotic applications due to the expensive time complexity.
This paper introduces a fast shadow detection method using a deep learning
framework, with a time cost that is appropriate for robotic applications. In
our solution, we first obtain a shadow prior map with the help of multi-class
support vector machine using statistical features. Then, we use a semantic-
aware patch-level Convolutional Neural Network that efficiently trains on
shadow examples by combining the original image and the shadow prior map.
Experiments on benchmark datasets demonstrate the proposed method significantly
decreases the time complexity of shadow detection, by one or two orders of
magnitude compared with state-of-the-art methods, without losing accuracy.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, Submitted to IROS 201

Shape-driven segmentation of the arterial wall in intravascular ultrasound images
Segmentation of arterial wall boundaries from intravascular images is an important problem for many applications in the study of plaque characteristics, mechanical properties of the arterial wall, its 3D reconstruction,
and its measurements such as lumen size, lumen radius, and wall radius. We present a shape-driven approach to segmentation of the arterial wall from intravascular ultrasound images in the rectangular domain. In a properly built
shape space using training data, we constrain the lumen and media-adventitia contours to a smooth, closed geometry, which increases the segmentation quality without any tradeoff with a regularizer term. In addition to a shape prior,
we utilize an intensity prior through a non-parametric probability density based image energy, with global image measurements rather than pointwise measurements used in previous methods. Furthermore, a detection step is included to address the challenges introduced to the segmentation process by side branches and calcifications. All these features greatly enhance our segmentation method. The tests of our algorithm on a large dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach
Detection of partial occlusions of assembled components to simplify the disassembly tasks
An automatic disassembly cell requires of a
computer vision system for recognition and localization of
the products and each of theirs components. The detection
of occlusions adds more information to the knowledge base
to identify components and products, and generate a
trustworthy and precise relational model (generic graph of
hierarchic relations among the different components that
make up the product). In this paper, a method to detect
partial occlusions in assembled components is presented.
This method is based on the fusion of regions and edges
information, and it offers a certain degree of simplification
for the recognition and modelled of the disassembly tasks,
of the set of components which compose the product. The
proposed approach to detect regions is a hybrid approach
between RGB and HSV spaces. The bi-dimensional histogram
V/S is employed for the selection of the appropriate
thresholds which serve as an aid to diminish the influence
of the highlights and shadows in images. The goal of this
paper is to present an approach for the detection of
occlusions in assembled components from a combination
of HSV and RGB spaces, a bi-dimensional histogram and
