    Get PDF
Purpose - This paper reports on a literature review with the aim to establish a guiding framework for the development of digital scholarship services in China’s university libraries. Design/methodology/approach - The framework was developed through systematically searching, screening, assessing, coding, and aggregating digital scholarship services as reported in the existing body of literature. Three types of literature were included in the analysis: (1) international academic literature as reported in English; (2) academic literature in Chinese; and (3) relevant professional reports. Findings - The literature analysis pointed to 25 different digital scholarship services, which emerged in six themes: supporting services, formulating research ideas, locating research partners, writing proposals, conducting research, and publishing results. Originality/value - Although this literature review focused on university libraries in China, the research findings and the guiding framework developed provide useful insights and indications that can be shared across international borders.Non

The contradictory Chinese media in the name of “socialism with Chinese characteristics”

For the past 30 years, the Chinese communication system has experienced tremendous changes, which have brought it from the ultimate propaganda machine to a striking contradictory mix of capitalist neoliberalism and socialist authoritarian ideological indoctrination. Since the central hypothesis of my research focuses on the fact that socialist Chinese media are undergoing capitalist neoliberal operations, the American communication system, a very typical capitalist neoliberal corporate media system, is contextualized. The thesis intends to explore the current Chinese communication system, media phenomena, and media practices that have manifested contradictions. I also attempt to find out the underlying drive to propel the historical transformation of the Chinese media. I will employ political economy of communication to theorize and ground my research. In order to lend further support to my argument, I will delineate a case study: Xinwen Lianbo, a national news program on China Central Television (CCTV). Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) will be used to investigate the TV news discourse- \u27Xinwen Lianbo\u27

The Impact of Belt and Road Initiative in Cultivating International Students in Chinese Universities

China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), sometimes referred to as the “New Silk Road”, is one of the most significant projects ever to be carried out. Introduced by President Xi Jinping in 2013, the wide range of development and investment from East Asia to Europe, and Africa. BRI provides support for the education of international students in China. The countries along the Belt and Road ("Belt and Road Countries") have different endowments in resources and complementary economies and there is great potential for linkages and common development between them. China will strengthen cooperation with Belt and Road countries by strengthening cooperation on policies, infrastructure, trade, and finance and people-to-people connectivity with them.China has a rich and deep historical and cultural heritage, unique academic cultural traditions and a social custom of great respect for teachers and teaching; in such a favorable policy, China will attract even more foreign students. More foreign students will not only help "spread the word" about China's rich and profound culture, but also promote colleges and universities and improve the use of the Belt and Road as a platform through which the culture of messengers and international talents can better understand and appreciate its culture. However, there is still a deep gap between the demands and availability, mainly due to the quality of communication. This study expands the main problems in the cultivation of international students by identifying the kind of cultural exchange needed for The Belt and Road construction, and then makes suggestions to improve the quality of cultural exchange in terms of Belt and Road Initiative. Regional Innovative Capacity in China: From the Perspective of Embedded Autonomy

    Get PDF
Innovation is widely considered as the core driver of nations\u27 economic growth and competitiveness. Since the start of economic reform in 1978, the provincial governments in China have gained much autonomy, which has led to the co-existence of multi-level innovation systems, national innovation system and regional (provincial) innovation system. With the economic development and social progress, the disparities in innovative capacity (I C) among regions in China are becoming increasingly larger. Considering the unique innovation context of China and drawing upon the research on IC, this paper proposed to employ theories of embedded autonomy and governed interdependence, which was developed to explain the institutional relationships based on newly industrialized Asia countries, to investigate the reason of variations of regional innovative capacity in China

The Adoption of E-Business by Organizations in China: An Institutional Perspective

    Get PDF
The Chinese e-business industry has a number of unusual features. Institutional factors such as strong nationalism, the state's entrenchment in the economy, political cognitive and political normative factors, regulative uncertainty, the role of professional associations, and the importance of business and social networks are deeply reflected in China's e-business development pattern. We argue that by approaching the Chinese e-business industry from the standpoint of institutional theory, we can capture these complex factors facilitating and hindering China's rapidly growing e-business industry. We thus employ an institutional perspective to explain the Chinese e-business landscape. In addition to advancing research on e-business in China, this paper also highlights several directions for future inquiry and implications for managers and policymakers

Power, Politics, and Education: Canadian Universities and International Education in an Era of New Geopolitics

    Get PDF
This paper focuses on the recent political spars between Canada and Saudi Arabia as well as China and their impact on Canadian universities. It asks three questions: (1) What key issues did Canada’s political strains with Saudi Arabia and China raise for Canadian universities’ international education (IE) initiatives and what issues were absent? (2) What do these key issues suggest about Canada’s approaches to IE in an era of new geopolitics? and (3) What implications can be drawn from these cases about Canadian university-government relations in the context of new geopolitics? Given the powerful role media plays in education policy, a systematic study was conducted across three main media sources to identify 74 articles and news releases between August 2018 and November 2019. Three dominant themes are identified and analyzed, each vividly illustrating the close ties between global politics, government foreign policy and IE within Canadian Universities. On the one hand, the narratives speak to concerns about IE as a risk to national security and, on the other, as a vehicle for Canada’s economic prosperity. However, what the media has not achieved is a broader discussion on how Canada needs to revisit its IE objectives and approaches in light of broader geopolitical shifts. Using the theoretical framework of soft power, the paper speaks to the limitations and short-sightedness of Canada’s approach to IE as soft power in this era of new geopolitics and concludes with three recommendations for Canada

This study is to explore the status of public relations in China. It examines if J. Grunig and Hunt\u27s (1994) four models of public relations-press agentry, public information, two-way asymmetrical, and two-way symmetrical-are practiced by Chinese public relations practitioners and if there are additional patterns of practicing public relations in China. It is a qualitative study. Long interviews with 10 participants were conducted to learn about the phenomenon of public relations in China. The interviews were based on one-to-one chat via the Microsoft Messenger software online. The data were collected using open-end questions that allowed the participants to provide in-depth reflections about their experiences and opinions. This research can provide western public relations firms with useful information and guidance to make strategic business plans and implement them in China effectively
