    Thermal Transients in District Heating Systems

    Heat fluxes in a district heating pipeline systems need to be controlled on the scale from minutes to an hour to adjust to evolving demand. There are two principal ways to control the heat flux - keep temperature fixed but adjust velocity of the carrier (typically water) or keep the velocity flow steady but then adjust temperature at the heat producing source (heat plant). We study the latter scenario, commonly used for operations in Russia and Nordic countries, and analyze dynamics of the heat front as it propagates through the system. Steady velocity flows in the district heating pipelines are typically turbulent and incompressible. Changes in the heat, on either consumption or production sides, lead to slow transients which last from tens of minutes to hours. We classify relevant physical phenomena in a single pipe, e.g. turbulent spread of the turbulent front. We then explain how to describe dynamics of temperature and heat flux evolution over a network efficiently and illustrate the network solution on a simple example involving one producer and one consumer of heat connected by "hot" and "cold" pipes.     Mission Planning Techniques for Cooperative LEO Spacecraft Constellations

    This research develops a mission planning approach that allows different systems to cooperate in accomplishing a single mission goal. Using the techniques described allows satellites to cooperate in efficiently maneuvering, or collecting images of Earth and transmitting the collected data to users on the ground. The individual resources onboard each satellite, like fuel, memory capacity and pointing agility, are used in a manner that ensures the goals and objectives of the mission are realized in a feasible way. A mission plan can be generated for each satellite within the cooperating group that collectively optimize the mission objectives from a global viewpoint. The unique methods and framework presented for planning the spacecraft operations are flexible and can be applied to a variety of decision making processes where prior decisions impact later decision options. This contribution to the satellite constellation mission planning field, thus has greater applicability to the wider decision problem discipline

    Sustainable distribution system design: a two-phase DoE-guided meta-heuristic solution approach for a three-echelon bi-objective AHP-integrated location-routing model

    This article introduces a sustainable integrated bi-objective location-routing model, its two-phase solution approach and an analysis procedure for the distribution side of three-echelon logistics networks. The mixed-integer programming model captures several real-world factors by introducing an additional objective function and a set of new constraints in the model that outbound logistics channels find difficult to reconcile. The sustainable model minimises CO2 emissions from transportation and total costs incurred in facilities and the transportation channels. Design of Experiment (DoE) is integrated to the meta-heuristic based optimiser to solve the model in two phases. The DoE-guided solution approach enables the optimiser to offer the best stable solution space by taking out solutions with poor design features from the space and refining the feasible solutions using a convergence algorithm thereby selecting the realistic results. Several alternative solution scenarios are obtained by prioritising and ranking the realistic solution sets through a multi-attribute decision analysis tool, Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS). The robust model provides the decision maker the ability to take decisions on sustainable open alternative optimal routes. The outcomes of this research provide theoretical and methodological contributions, in terms of integrated bi-objective location-routing model and its two-phase DoE-guided meta-heuristic solution approach, for the distribution side of three-echelon logistics networks

    Access and metro network convergence for flexible end-to-end network design

    This paper reports on the architectural, protocol, physical layer, and integrated testbed demonstrations carried out by the DISCUS FP7 consortium in the area of access - metro network convergence. Our architecture modeling results show the vast potential for cost and power savings that node consolidation can bring. The architecture, however, also recognizes the limits of long-reach transmission for low-latency 5G services and proposes ways to address such shortcomings in future projects. The testbed results, which have been conducted end-to-end, across access - metro and core, and have targeted all the layers of the network from the application down to the physical layer, show the practical feasibility of the concepts proposed in the project

    A comparison of different routing schemes for the robust network loading problem: polyhedral results and computation

    International audienceWe consider the capacity formulation of the Robust Network Loading Problem. The aim of the paper is to study what happens from the theoretical and from the computational point of view when the routing policy (or scheme) changes. The theoretical results consider static, volume, affine and dynamic routing, along with splittable and unsplittable flows. Our polyhedral study provides evidence that some well-known valid inequalities (the robust cutset inequalities) are facets for all the considered routing/flows policies under the same assumptions. We also introduce a new class of valid inequalities, the robust 3-partition inequalities, showing that, instead, they are facets in some settings, but not in others. A branch-and-cut algorithm is also proposed and tested. The computational experiments refer to the problem with splittable flows and the budgeted uncertainty set. We report results on several instances coming from real-life networks, also including historical traffic data, as well as on randomly generated instances. Our results show that the problem with static and volume routing can be solved quite efficiently in practice and that, in many cases, volume routing is cheaper than static routing, thus possibly representing the best compromise between cost and computing time. Moreover, unlikely from what one may expect, the problem with dynamic routing is easier to solve than the one with affine routing, which is hardly tractable, even using decomposition methods
