    An Analysis of Lazy and Eager Limited Preemption Approaches under DAG-Based Global Fixed Priority Scheduling

    DAG-based scheduling models have been shown to effectively express the parallel execution of current many-core heterogeneous architectures. However, their applicability to real-time settings is limited by the difficulties to find tight estimations of the worst-case timing parameters of tasks that may arbitrarily be preempted/migrated at any instruction. An efficient approach to increase the system predictability is to limit task preemptions to a set of pre-defined points. This limited preemption model supports two different preemption approaches, eager and lazy, which have been analyzed only for sequential task-sets. This paper proposes a new response time analysis that computes an upper bound on the lower priority blocking that each task may incur with eager and lazy preemptions. We evaluate our analysis with both, synthetic DAG-based task-sets and a real case-study from the automotive domain.     A survey of techniques for reducing interference in real-time applications on multicore platforms

    This survey reviews the scientific literature on techniques for reducing interference in real-time multicore systems, focusing on the approaches proposed between 2015 and 2020. It also presents proposals that use interference reduction techniques without considering the predictability issue. The survey highlights interference sources and categorizes proposals from the perspective of the shared resource. It covers techniques for reducing contentions in main memory, cache memory, a memory bus, and the integration of interference effects into schedulability analysis.     Improved CRPD analysis and a secure scheduler against information leakage in real-time systems

    Real-time systems are widely applied to the time-critical fields. In order to guarantee that all tasks can be completed on time, predictability becomes a necessary factor when designing a real-time system. Due to more and more requirements about the performance in the real-time embedded system, the cache memory is introduced to the real-time embedded systems. However, the cache behavior is difficult to predict since the data will be loaded either on the cache or the memory. In order to taking the unexpected overhead, execution time are often enlarged by a certain (huge) factor. However, this will cause a waste of computation resource. Hence, in this thesis, we first integrate the cache-related preemption delay to the previous global earliest deadline first schedulability analysis in the direct-mapped cache. Moreover, several analyses for tighter G-EDF schedulability tests are conducted based on the refined estimation of the maximal number of preemptions. The experimental study is conducted to demonstrate the performance of the proposed methods. Furthermore, Under the classic scheduling mechanisms, the execution patterns of tasks on such a system can be easily derived. Therefore, in the second part of the thesis, a novel scheduler, roulette wheel scheduler (RWS), is proposed to randomize the task execution pattern. Unlike traditional schedulers, RWS assigns probabilities to each task at predefined scheduling points, and the choice for execution is randomized, such that the execution pattern is no longer fixed. We apply the concept of schedule entropy to measure the amount of uncertainty introduced by any randomized scheduler, which reflects the unlikelihood of for such attacks to success. Comparing to existing randomized scheduler that gives all eligible tasks equal likelihood at a given time point, the proposed method adjusted such values so that the entropy can be greatly increased --Abstract, page iii

    Response Time Analysis of Hierarchical Scheduling: the Synchronized Deferrable Servers Approach

    Hierarchical scheduling allows reservation of processor bandwidth and the use of different schedulers for different applications on a single platform. We propose a hierarchical scheduling interface called synchronized deferrable servers that can reserve different processor bandwidth on each core, and can combine global and partitioned scheduling on a multicore platform. Significant challenges will arise in the response time analysis of a task set if the tasks are globally scheduled on a multiprocessor platform and the processor bandwidth reserved for the tasks on each processor is different; as a result, existing works on response time analysis for dedicated scheduling on identical multiprocessor platforms are no longer applicable. A new response time analysis that overcomes these challenges is presented and evaluated by simulations. Based on this new analysis, we show that evenly allocating bandwidth across cores is “better” than other allocation schemes in terms of schedulability, and that the threshold between lightweight and heavyweight tasks under hierarchical scheduling may be different from the threshold under dedicated scheduling

    An extensible framework for multicore response time analysis

    In this paper, we introduce a multicore response time analysis (MRTA) framework, which decouples response time analysis from a reliance on context independent WCET values. Instead, the analysis formulates response times directly from the demands placed on different hardware resources. The MRTA framework is extensible to different multicore architectures, with a variety of arbitration policies for the common interconnects, and different types and arrangements of local memory. We instantiate the framework for single level local data and instruction memories (cache or scratchpads), for a variety of memory bus arbitration policies, including: Round-Robin, FIFO, Fixed-Priority, Processor-Priority, and TDMA, and account for DRAM refreshes. The MRTA framework provides a general approach to timing verification for multicore systems that is parametric in the hardware configuration and so can be used at the architectural design stage to compare the guaranteed levels of real-time performance that can be obtained with different hardware configurations. We use the framework in this way to evaluate the performance of multicore systems with a variety of different architectural components and policies. These results are then used to compose a predictable architecture, which is compared against a reference architecture designed for good average-case behaviour. This comparison shows that the predictable architecture has substantially better guaranteed real-time performance, with the precision of the analysis verified using cycle-accurate simulation
