Learning Aligned Cross-Modal Representations from Weakly Aligned Data
People can recognize scenes across many different modalities beyond natural
images. In this paper, we investigate how to learn cross-modal scene
representations that transfer across modalities. To study this problem, we
introduce a new cross-modal scene dataset. While convolutional neural networks
can categorize cross-modal scenes well, they also learn an intermediate
representation not aligned across modalities, which is undesirable for
cross-modal transfer applications. We present methods to regularize cross-modal
convolutional neural networks so that they have a shared representation that is
agnostic of the modality. Our experiments suggest that our scene representation
can help transfer representations across modalities for retrieval. Moreover,
our visualizations suggest that units emerge in the shared representation that
tend to activate on consistent concepts independently of the modality.Comment: Conference paper at CVPR 201
Recent Advances in Transfer Learning for Cross-Dataset Visual Recognition: A Problem-Oriented Perspective
This paper takes a problem-oriented perspective and presents a comprehensive
review of transfer learning methods, both shallow and deep, for cross-dataset
visual recognition. Specifically, it categorises the cross-dataset recognition
into seventeen problems based on a set of carefully chosen data and label
attributes. Such a problem-oriented taxonomy has allowed us to examine how
different transfer learning approaches tackle each problem and how well each
problem has been researched to date. The comprehensive problem-oriented review
of the advances in transfer learning with respect to the problem has not only
revealed the challenges in transfer learning for visual recognition, but also
the problems (e.g. eight of the seventeen problems) that have been scarcely
studied. This survey not only presents an up-to-date technical review for
researchers, but also a systematic approach and a reference for a machine
learning practitioner to categorise a real problem and to look up for a
possible solution accordingly
Sparse Transfer Learning for Interactive Video Search Reranking
Visual reranking is effective to improve the performance of the text-based
video search. However, existing reranking algorithms can only achieve limited
improvement because of the well-known semantic gap between low level visual
features and high level semantic concepts. In this paper, we adopt interactive
video search reranking to bridge the semantic gap by introducing user's
labeling effort. We propose a novel dimension reduction tool, termed sparse
transfer learning (STL), to effectively and efficiently encode user's labeling
information. STL is particularly designed for interactive video search
reranking. Technically, it a) considers the pair-wise discriminative
information to maximally separate labeled query relevant samples from labeled
query irrelevant ones, b) achieves a sparse representation for the subspace to
encodes user's intention by applying the elastic net penalty, and c) propagates
user's labeling information from labeled samples to unlabeled samples by using
the data distribution knowledge. We conducted extensive experiments on the
TRECVID 2005, 2006 and 2007 benchmark datasets and compared STL with popular
dimension reduction algorithms. We report superior performance by using the

Image Clustering with External Guidance
The core of clustering is incorporating prior knowledge to construct
supervision signals. From classic k-means based on data compactness to recent
contrastive clustering guided by self-supervision, the evolution of clustering
methods intrinsically corresponds to the progression of supervision signals. At
present, substantial efforts have been devoted to mining internal supervision
signals from data. Nevertheless, the abundant external knowledge such as
semantic descriptions, which naturally conduces to clustering, is regrettably
overlooked. In this work, we propose leveraging external knowledge as a new
supervision signal to guide clustering, even though it seems irrelevant to the
given data. To implement and validate our idea, we design an externally guided
clustering method (Text-Aided Clustering, TAC), which leverages the textual
semantics of WordNet to facilitate image clustering. Specifically, TAC first
selects and retrieves WordNet nouns that best distinguish images to enhance the
feature discriminability. Then, to improve image clustering performance, TAC
collaborates text and image modalities by mutually distilling cross-modal
neighborhood information. Experiments demonstrate that TAC achieves
state-of-the-art performance on five widely used and three more challenging
image clustering benchmarks, including the full ImageNet-1K dataset
The Emerging Trends of Multi-Label Learning
Exabytes of data are generated daily by humans, leading to the growing need
for new efforts in dealing with the grand challenges for multi-label learning
brought by big data. For example, extreme multi-label classification is an
active and rapidly growing research area that deals with classification tasks
with an extremely large number of classes or labels; utilizing massive data
with limited supervision to build a multi-label classification model becomes
valuable for practical applications, etc. Besides these, there are tremendous
efforts on how to harvest the strong learning capability of deep learning to
better capture the label dependencies in multi-label learning, which is the key
for deep learning to address real-world classification tasks. However, it is
noted that there has been a lack of systemic studies that focus explicitly on
analyzing the emerging trends and new challenges of multi-label learning in the
era of big data. It is imperative to call for a comprehensive survey to fulfill
