    Performance evaluation of LoRa LPWAN technology for IoT-based blast-induced ground vibration system

    The recent proliferation of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) evolution into the Internet of Things (IoT) vision enables a variety of low-cost monitoring applications which allows a seamless transfer of information via embedded computing and network devices. Ambiguous ground vibration can be induced by blasting demolition is a severe concern which grievously damages the nearby dwellings and plants. It is an indispensable prerequisite for measuring the blast-induced ground vibration (BIGV), accomplishing a topical and most active research area. Thus, proposed and developed an architecture which emphasizes the IoT realm and implements a low-power wide-area networks (LPWANs) based system. Especially, using the available Long-Range (LoRa) Correct as Radio Frequency (RF) module, construct a WSN configuration for acquisition and streaming of required data from and to an IoT gateway. The system can wirelessly deliver the information to mine management and surrounding rural peoples to aware of the intensity of BIGV level. In this article, an endeavor has been made to introduce a LoRa WAN connectivity and proved the potentiality of the integrated WSN paradigm by testing of data transmission-reception in a non-line of sight (NLOS) condition. The path loss metrics and other required parameters have been measured using the LoRa WAN technology at 2.4 GHz frequency

    EFFECT OF BLASTING ON THE STABILITY OF LINING DURING EXCAVATION OF NEW TUNNEL NEAR THE EXISTING TUNNEL

    In recent years, experimental and numerical researches on the effect of blasting pressure on the stability of existing tunnels was widely obtained. However, the effect of the blasting pressure during excavation a new tunnel or expansion old tunnels on an existing tunnel has disadvantages and still unclear. Some researches were carried out to study the relationship of the observed Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) on the lining areas along the existing tunnel direction, due to either the lack of in situ test data or the difficulty in conducting field tests, particularly for tunnels that are usually old and vulnerable after several decades of service. This paper introduces using numerical methods with the field data investigations on the effect of the blasting in a new tunnel on the surrounding rock mass and on the existing tunnel. The research results show that not only predicting the tunnel lining damage zone under the impact of blast loads but also determination peak maximum of explosion at the same time at the surface of tunnel working

    Alternative approaches to vibration measurement due to the blasting operation: A pilot study

    As the infrastructure grows, space on the surface in the urban area is diminishing, and the view of the builders is increasingly moving underground. Implementation of underground structures, however, presents a number of problems during construction. One of the primary side effects of tunnel excavation is vibration. These vibrations need to be monitored for potential damage to structures on the surface, and this monitoring is an integral part of any such structure. This paper brings an original pilot comparative study of standard seismic instrumentation with experimentally developed fiber-optic interferometric and acoustic systems for the purpose of monitoring vibration caused by the blasting operation. The results presented show that systems operating on physical principles (other than those previously used) have the potential to be an alternative that will replace the existing costly seismic equipment. The paper presents waveform images and frequency spectra from experimental measurements of the dynamic response of the rock environment, due to blasting operation performed shallowly during the tunnel excavation of a sewer collector. In the time and frequency domain, there is, by comparison, significant agreement both in the character of the waveform images (recording length, blasting operation timing) and in the spectra (bandwidth, dominant maxima).Web of Science1919art. no. 408

    Investigation into the Application of Construction and Demolition Waste in Urban Roads

    The recycling and reuse of waste materials is a topic of global concern and great international interest for those interested in sustainable development and protecting the environment. In recent decades, global production of construction and demolition waste (C&D waste) has significantly increased and became a worldwide problem. This research proposes to evaluate the feasibility of using aggregate from recycled C&D waste for urban road embankment applications based on the Sanhuan road construction project in eastern Xi’an. An extensive suite of laboratory and field compaction tests were carried out to determine the physical properties and engineering characteristics of the C&D waste. The effect of curing on the strength of the C&D waste was investigated using unconfined compression strength (UCS), California bearing ratio (CBR), and deflection tests. The results show that the C&D waste has the characteristics of high strength and significant stability after simple treatment and further suggest that the use of these materials for paving urban road embankments is feasible. This study is of value for the reasonable and effective promotion of using C&D waste recycled materials in road subgrade applications

    Stress Analysis of CFG Pile Composite Foundation in Consolidating Saturated Mine Tailings Dam

    Cement fly-ash gravel (CFG) pile is a widely used ground reinforcement technique. This paper aims to address the mechanical characteristics of CFG composite foundation in consolidating saturated mine tailings (MTs) dam. The field static load tests were employed to explore the bearing capacity of the CFG composite foundation, and finite element (FE) models in three dimensions validated through comparison with experimental results were used to discuss the pile-soil stress distribution and pile-soil stress ratio of the CFG composite foundation. The results indicate that the distribution of earth pressure and pile stress is relatively homogeneous and stable over depth and load, while the development of CFG composite foundation bearing capacity is insufficient, in which the developed bearing capacity of CFG piles is less than 50% of its characteristic value. Additionally, compared with the laboratory model test results, the pile-soil stress ratio decreases with the increasing of the load in FEM results proved to better conform to the actual engineering conditions. Furthermore, the deformation modulus and thickness of cushion exert significant influence on pile-soil stress ratio and integral bearing capacity of CFG composite foundation

    Investigation Progresses and Applications of Fractional Derivative Model in Geotechnical Engineering

    Over the past couple of decades, as a new mathematical tool for addressing a number of tough problems, fractional calculus has been gaining a continually increasing interest in diverse scientific fields, including geotechnical engineering due primarily to geotechnical rheology phenomenon. Unlike the classical constitutive models in which simulation analysis gradually fails to meet the reasonable accuracy of requirement, the fractional derivative models have shown the merits of hereditary phenomena with long memory. Additionally, it is traced that the fractional derivative model is one of the most effective and accurate approaches to describe the rheology phenomenon. In relation to this, an overview aimed first at model structure and parameter determination in combination with application cases based on fractional calculus was provided. Furthermore, this review paper shed light on the practical application aspects of deformation analysis of circular tunnel, rheological settlement of subgrade, and relevant loess researches subjected to the achievements acquired in geotechnical engineering. Finally, concluding remarks and important future investigation directions were pointed out
