    Design, Control and Motion Planning for a Novel Modular Extendable Robotic Manipulator

    This dissertation discusses an implementation of a design, control and motion planning for a novel extendable modular redundant robotic manipulator in space constraints, which robots may encounter for completing required tasks in small and constrained environment. The design intent is to facilitate the movement of the proposed robotic manipulator in constrained environments, such as rubble piles. The proposed robotic manipulator with multi Degree of Freedom (m-DOF) links is capable of elongating by 25% of its nominal length. In this context, a design optimization problem with multiple objectives is also considered. In order to identify the benefits of the proposed design strategy, the reachable workspace of the proposed manipulator is compared with that of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) serpentine robot. The simulation results show that the proposed manipulator has a relatively efficient reachable workspace, needed in constrained environments. The singularity and manipulability of the designed manipulator are investigated. In this study, we investigate the number of links that produces the optimal design architecture of the proposed robotic manipulator. The total number of links decided by a design optimization can be useful distinction in practice. Also, we have considered a novel robust bio-inspired Sliding Mode Control (SMC) to achieve favorable tracking performance for a class of robotic manipulators with uncertainties. To eliminate the chattering problem of the conventional sliding mode control, we apply the Brain Emotional Learning Based Intelligent Control (BELBIC) to adaptively adjust the control input law in sliding mode control. The on-line computed parameters achieve favorable system robustness in process of parameter uncertainties and external disturbances. The simulation results demonstrate that our control strategy is effective in tracking high speed trajectories with less chattering, as compared to the conventional sliding mode control. The learning process of BLS is shown to enhance the performance of a new robust controller. Lastly, we consider the potential field methodology to generate a desired trajectory in small and constrained environments. Also, Obstacle Collision Avoidance (OCA) is applied to obtain an inverse kinematic solution of a redundant robotic manipulator

    With technological advancements and the development of robots have begun to be utilized in numerous sectors, including industrial, agricultural, and medical. Optimizing the path planning of robot manipulators is a fundamental aspect of robot research with promising future prospects. The precise robot manipulator tracks can enhance the efficacy of a variety of robot duties, such as workshop operations, crop harvesting, and medical procedures, among others. Trajectory planning for robot manipulators is one of the fundamental robot technologies, and manipulator trajectory accuracy can be enhanced by the design of their controllers. However, the majority of controllers devised up to this point were incapable of effectively resolving the nonlinearity and uncertainty issues of high-degree freedom manipulators in order to overcome these issues and enhance the track performance of high-degree freedom manipulators. Developing practical path-planning algorithms to efficiently complete robot functions in autonomous robotics is critical. In addition, designing a collision-free path in conjunction with the physical limitations of the robot is a very challenging challenge due to the complex environment surrounding the dynamics and kinetics of robots with different degrees of freedom (DoF) and/or multiple arms.     Design and analysis of a bio-inspired module-based robotic arm

    This paper presents a novel bio-inspired modular robotic arm that is purely evolved and developed from a mechanical stem cell. Inspired by stem cell whilst different from the other robot "cell" or "molecule", a fundamental mechanical stem cell is proposed leading to the development of mechanical cells, bones and a Sarrus-linkage-based muscle. Using the proposed bones and muscles, a bio-inspired modular-based five-degrees-of-freedom robotic arm is developed. Then, kinematics of the robotic arm is investigated which is associated with an optimization-method-based numerical iterative algorithm leading to the inverse kinematic solutions through solving the non-linear transcendental equations. Subsequently, numerical example of the proposed robotic arm is provided with simulations illustrating the workspace and inverse kinematics of the arm. Further, a prototype of the robotic arm is developed which is integrated with low-level control systems, and initial motion and manipulation tests are implemented. The results indicate that this novel robotic arm functions appropriately and has the virtues of lower cost, larger workspace, and a simpler structure with more compact size

    Towards Safer Obstacle Avoidance for Continuum-Style Manipulator in Dynamic Environments

    The flexibility and dexterity of continuum manipulators in comparison with rigid-link counterparts have become main features behind their recent popularity. Despite of that, the problem of navigation and motion planning for continuum manipulators turns out to be demanding tasks due to the complexity of their flexible structure modelling which in turns complicates the pose estimation. In this paper, we present a real-time obstacle avoidance algorithm for tendondriven continuum-style manipulator in dynamic environments. The algorithm is equipped with a non-linear observer based on an Extended Kalman Filter to estimate the pose of every point along the manipulator’s body. A local observability analysis for the kinematic model of the manipulator is also presented. The overall algorithm works well for a model of a single-segment continuum manipulator in a real-time simulation environment with moving obstacles in the workspace of manipulators, able to avoid the whole body of manipulators from collision

    Self-Collision Avoidance Control of Dual-Arm Multi-Link Robot Using Neural Network Approach

    The problem of mutual collisions of manipulators of a dual-arm multi-link robot (so-called self-collisions) arises during the performance of a cooperative technological operation. Self-collisions can lead to non-fulfillment of the technological operation or even to the failure of the manipulators. In this regard, it is necessary to develop a method for online detection and avoidance of self-collisions of manipulators. The article presents a method for detecting and avoiding self-collisions of multi-link manipulators using an artificial neural network by the example of the dual-arm robot SAR-401. A comparative analysis is carried out and the architecture of an artificial neural network for self-collisions avoidance control of dual-arm robot manipulators is proposed. The novelty of the proposed approach lies in the fact that it is an alternative to the generally accepted methods of detecting self-collisions based on the numerical solution of inverse kinematics problems for manipulators in the form of nonlinear optimization problems. Experimental results performed based on MATLAB model, the simulator of the robot SAR-401 and on the real robot itself confirmed the applicability and effectiveness of the proposed approach. It is shown that the detection of possible self-collisions using the proposed method based on an artificial neural network is performed approximately 10 times faster than approaches based on the numerical solution of the inverse kinematics problem while maintaining the specified accuracy

    Trajectory Generation for a Multibody Robotic System: Modern Methods Based on Product of Exponentials

    This work presents several trajectory generation algorithms for multibody robotic systems based on the Product of Exponentials (PoE) formulation, also known as screw theory. A PoE formulation is first developed to model the kinematics and dynamics of a multibody robotic manipulator (Sawyer Robot) with 7 revolute joints and an end-effector. In the first method, an Inverse Kinematics (IK) algorithm based on the Newton-Raphson iterative method is applied to generate constrained joint-space trajectories corresponding to straight-line and curvilinear motions of the end effector in Cartesian space with finite jerk. The second approach describes Constant Screw Axis (CSA) trajectories which are generated using Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) techniques. The CSA method smooths the trajectory in the Special Euclidean (SE(3)) space. In the third approach, a multi-objective Swarm Intelligence (SI) trajectory generation algorithm is developed, where the IK problem is tackled using a combined SI-PoE ML technique resulting in a joint trajectory that avoids obstacles in the workspace, and satisfies the finite jerk constraint on end-effector while minimizing the torque profiles. The final method is a different approach to solving the IK problem using the Deep Q-Learning (DQN) Reinforcement Learning (RL) algorithm which can generate different joint space trajectories given the Cartesian end-effector path. For all methods above, the Newton-Euler recursive algorithm is implemented to compute the inverse dynamics, which generates the joint torques profiles. The simulated torque profiles are experimentally validated by feeding the generated joint trajectories to the Sawyer robotic arm through the developed Robot Operating System (ROS) - Python environment in the Software Development Kit (SDK) mode. The developed algorithms can be used to generate various trajectories for robotic arms (e.g. spacecraft servicing missions)

    Nonlinear Modeling and Control of Driving Interfaces and Continuum Robots for System Performance Gains

    With the rise of (semi)autonomous vehicles and continuum robotics technology and applications, there has been an increasing interest in controller and haptic interface designs. The presence of nonlinearities in the vehicle dynamics is the main challenge in the selection of control algorithms for real-time regulation and tracking of (semi)autonomous vehicles. Moreover, control of continuum structures with infinite dimensions proves to be difficult due to their complex dynamics plus the soft and flexible nature of the manipulator body. The trajectory tracking and control of automobile and robotic systems requires control algorithms that can effectively deal with the nonlinearities of the system without the need for approximation, modeling uncertainties, and input disturbances. Control strategies based on a linearized model are often inadequate in meeting precise performance requirements. To cope with these challenges, one must consider nonlinear techniques. Nonlinear control systems provide tools and methodologies for enabling the design and realization of (semi)autonomous vehicle and continuum robots with extended specifications based on the operational mission profiles. This dissertation provides an insight into various nonlinear controllers developed for (semi)autonomous vehicles and continuum robots as a guideline for future applications in the automobile and soft robotics field. A comprehensive assessment of the approaches and control strategies, as well as insight into the future areas of research in this field, are presented.First, two vehicle haptic interfaces, including a robotic grip and a joystick, both of which are accompanied by nonlinear sliding mode control, have been developed and studied on a steer-by-wire platform integrated with a virtual reality driving environment. An operator-in-the-loop evaluation that included 30 human test subjects was used to investigate these haptic steering interfaces over a prescribed series of driving maneuvers through real time data logging and post-test questionnaires. A conventional steering wheel with a robust sliding mode controller was used for all the driving events for comparison. Test subjects operated these interfaces for a given track comprised of a double lane-change maneuver and a country road driving event. Subjective and objective results demonstrate that the driver’s experience can be enhanced up to 75.3% with a robotic steering input when compared to the traditional steering wheel during extreme maneuvers such as high-speed driving and sharp turn (e.g., hairpin turn) passing. Second, a cellphone-inspired portable human-machine-interface (HMI) that incorporated the directional control of the vehicle as well as the brake and throttle functionality into a single holistic device will be presented. A nonlinear adaptive control technique and an optimal control approach based on driver intent were also proposed to accompany the mechatronic system for combined longitudinal and lateral vehicle guidance. Assisting the disabled drivers by excluding extensive arm and leg movements ergonomically, the device has been tested in a driving simulator platform. Human test subjects evaluated the mechatronic system with various control configurations through obstacle avoidance and city road driving test, and a conventional set of steering wheel and pedals were also utilized for comparison. Subjective and objective results from the tests demonstrate that the mobile driving interface with the proposed control scheme can enhance the driver’s performance by up to 55.8% when compared to the traditional driving system during aggressive maneuvers. The system’s superior performance during certain vehicle maneuvers and approval received from the participants demonstrated its potential as an alternative driving adaptation for disabled drivers. Third, a novel strategy is designed for trajectory control of a multi-section continuum robot in three-dimensional space to achieve accurate orientation, curvature, and section length tracking. The formulation connects the continuum manipulator dynamic behavior to a virtual discrete-jointed robot whose degrees of freedom are directly mapped to those of a continuum robot section under the hypothesis of constant curvature. Based on this connection, a computed torque control architecture is developed for the virtual robot, for which inverse kinematics and dynamic equations are constructed and exploited, with appropriate transformations developed for implementation on the continuum robot. The control algorithm is validated in a realistic simulation and implemented on a six degree-of-freedom two-section OctArm continuum manipulator. Both simulation and experimental results show that the proposed method could manage simultaneous extension/contraction, bending, and torsion actions on multi-section continuum robots with decent tracking performance (e.g. steady state arc length and curvature tracking error of 3.3mm and 130mm-1, respectively). Last, semi-autonomous vehicles equipped with assistive control systems may experience degraded lateral behaviors when aggressive driver steering commands compete with high levels of autonomy. This challenge can be mitigated with effective operator intent recognition, which can configure automated systems in context-specific situations where the driver intends to perform a steering maneuver. In this article, an ensemble learning-based driver intent recognition strategy has been developed. A nonlinear model predictive control algorithm has been designed and implemented to generate haptic feedback for lateral vehicle guidance, assisting the drivers in accomplishing their intended action. To validate the framework, operator-in-the-loop testing with 30 human subjects was conducted on a steer-by-wire platform with a virtual reality driving environment. The roadway scenarios included lane change, obstacle avoidance, intersection turns, and highway exit. The automated system with learning-based driver intent recognition was compared to both the automated system with a finite state machine-based driver intent estimator and the automated system without any driver intent prediction for all driving events. Test results demonstrate that semi-autonomous vehicle performance can be enhanced by up to 74.1% with a learning-based intent predictor. The proposed holistic framework that integrates human intelligence, machine learning algorithms, and vehicle control can help solve the driver-system conflict problem leading to safer vehicle operations

    Human-like arm motion generation: a review

    In the last decade, the objectives outlined by the needs of personal robotics have led to the rise of new biologically-inspired techniques for arm motion planning. This paper presents a literature review of the most recent research on the generation of human-like arm movements in humanoid and manipulation robotic systems. Search methods and inclusion criteria are described. The studies are analyzed taking into consideration the sources of publication, the experimental settings, the type of movements, the technical approach, and the human motor principles that have been used to inspire and assess human-likeness. Results show that there is a strong focus on the generation of single-arm reaching movements and biomimetic-based methods. However, there has been poor attention to manipulation, obstacle-avoidance mechanisms, and dual-arm motion generation. For these reasons, human-like arm motion generation may not fully respect human behavioral and neurological key features and may result restricted to specific tasks of human-robot interaction.
