Integration of visual and joint information to enable linear reaching motions
A new dynamics-driven control law was developed for a robot arm, based on the feedback control law which uses the linear transformation directly from work space to joint space. This was validated using a simulation of a two-joint planar robot arm and an optimisation algorithm was used to find the optimum matrix to generate straight trajectories of the end-effector in the work space. We found that this linear matrix can be decomposed into the rotation matrix representing the orientation of the goal direction and the joint relation matrix (MJRM) representing the joint response to errors in the Cartesian work space. The decomposition of the linear matrix indicates the separation of path planning in terms of the direction of the reaching motion and the synergies of joint coordination. Once the MJRM is numerically
obtained, the feedfoward planning of reaching direction allows us to provide asymptotically stable, linear trajectories in the entire work space through rotational transformation, completely avoiding the use of inverse kinematics. Our dynamics-driven control law suggests an interesting framework for interpreting human reaching motion control alternative to the dominant inverse method based explanations, avoiding expensive computation of the inverse kinematics and the point-to-point control along the desired trajectories
Survey of computer vision algorithms and applications for unmanned aerial vehicles
This paper presents a complete review of computer vision algorithms and vision-based intelligent applications, that are developed in the field of the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in the latest decade. During this time, the evolution of relevant technologies for UAVs; such as component miniaturization, the increase of computational capabilities, and the evolution of computer vision techniques have allowed an important advance in the development of UAVs technologies and applications. Particularly, computer vision technologies integrated in UAVs allow to develop cutting-edge technologies to cope with aerial perception difficulties; such as visual navigation algorithms, obstacle detection and avoidance and aerial decision-making. All these expert technologies have developed a wide spectrum of application for UAVs, beyond the classic military and defense purposes. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and Computer Vision are common topics in expert systems, so thanks to the recent advances in perception technologies, modern intelligent applications are developed to enhance autonomous UAV positioning, or automatic algorithms to avoid aerial collisions, among others. Then, the presented survey is based on artificial perception applications that represent important advances in the latest years in the expert system field related to the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. In this paper, the most significant advances in this field are presented, able to solve fundamental technical limitations; such as visual odometry, obstacle detection, mapping and localization, et cetera. Besides, they have been analyzed based on their capabilities and potential utility. Vision-Based navigation system for unmanned aerial vehicles
Mención Internacional en el título de doctorThe main objective of this dissertation is to provide Unmanned Aerial Vehicles
(UAVs) with a robust navigation system; in order to allow the UAVs to perform
complex tasks autonomously and in real-time. The proposed algorithms deal with
solving the navigation problem for outdoor as well as indoor environments, mainly
based on visual information that is captured by monocular cameras. In addition,
this dissertation presents the advantages of using the visual sensors as the main
source of data, or complementing other sensors in providing useful information; in
order to improve the accuracy and the robustness of the sensing purposes.
The dissertation mainly covers several research topics based on computer vision
techniques: (I) Pose Estimation, to provide a solution for estimating the 6D pose of
the UAV. This algorithm is based on the combination of SIFT detector and FREAK
descriptor; which maintains the performance of the feature points matching and decreases
the computational time. Thereafter, the pose estimation problem is solved
based on the decomposition of the world-to-frame and frame-to-frame homographies.
(II) Obstacle Detection and Collision Avoidance, in which, the UAV is able to
sense and detect the frontal obstacles that are situated in its path. The detection
algorithm mimics the human behaviors for detecting the approaching obstacles; by
analyzing the size changes of the detected feature points, combined with the expansion
ratios of the convex hull constructed around the detected feature points
from consecutive frames. Then, by comparing the area ratio of the obstacle and the
position of the UAV, the method decides if the detected obstacle may cause a collision.
Finally, the algorithm extracts the collision-free zones around the obstacle,
and combining with the tracked waypoints, the UAV performs the avoidance maneuver.
(III) Navigation Guidance, which generates the waypoints to determine
the flight path based on environment and the situated obstacles. Then provide
a strategy to follow the path segments and in an efficient way and perform the
flight maneuver smoothly. (IV) Visual Servoing, to offer different control solutions (Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC) and PID), based on the obtained visual information; in
order to achieve the flight stability as well as to perform the correct maneuver; to
avoid the possible collisions and track the waypoints.
All the proposed algorithms have been verified with real flights in both indoor
and outdoor environments, taking into consideration the visual conditions; such as
illumination and textures. The obtained results have been validated against other
systems; such as VICON motion capture system, DGPS in the case of pose estimate
algorithm. In addition, the proposed algorithms have been compared with several
previous works in the state of the art, and are results proves the improvement in
the accuracy and the robustness of the proposed algorithms.
Finally, this dissertation concludes that the visual sensors have the advantages
of lightweight and low consumption and provide reliable information, which is
considered as a powerful tool in the navigation systems to increase the autonomy
of the UAVs for real-world applications.El objetivo principal de esta tesis es proporcionar Vehiculos Aereos no Tripulados
(UAVs) con un sistema de navegacion robusto, para permitir a los UAVs realizar
tareas complejas de forma autonoma y en tiempo real. Los algoritmos propuestos
tratan de resolver problemas de la navegacion tanto en ambientes interiores como
al aire libre basandose principalmente en la informacion visual captada por las camaras
monoculares. Ademas, esta tesis doctoral presenta la ventaja de usar sensores
visuales bien como fuente principal de datos o complementando a otros sensores
en el suministro de informacion util, con el fin de mejorar la precision y la
robustez de los procesos de deteccion.
La tesis cubre, principalmente, varios temas de investigacion basados en tecnicas
de vision por computador: (I) Estimacion de la Posicion y la Orientacion
(Pose), para proporcionar una solucion a la estimacion de la posicion y orientacion
en 6D del UAV. Este algoritmo se basa en la combinacion del detector SIFT y el
descriptor FREAK, que mantiene el desempeno del a funcion de puntos de coincidencia
y disminuye el tiempo computacional. De esta manera, se soluciona el
problema de la estimacion de la posicion basandose en la descomposicion de las
homografias mundo a imagen e imagen a imagen. (II) Deteccion obstaculos y elusion
colisiones, donde el UAV es capaz de percibir y detectar los obstaculos frontales
que se encuentran en su camino. El algoritmo de deteccion imita comportamientos
humanos para detectar los obstaculos que se acercan, mediante el analisis de la
magnitud del cambio de los puntos caracteristicos detectados de referencia, combinado
con los ratios de expansion de los contornos convexos construidos alrededor
de los puntos caracteristicos detectados en frames consecutivos. A continuacion,
comparando la proporcion del area del obstaculo y la posicion del UAV, el metodo
decide si el obstaculo detectado puede provocar una colision. Por ultimo, el algoritmo
extrae las zonas libres de colision alrededor del obstaculo y combinandolo
con los puntos de referencia, elUAV realiza la maniobra de evasion. (III) Guiado de navegacion, que genera los puntos de referencia para determinar la trayectoria de
vuelo basada en el entorno y en los obstaculos detectados que encuentra. Proporciona
una estrategia para seguir los segmentos del trazado de una manera eficiente
y realizar la maniobra de vuelo con suavidad. (IV) Guiado por Vision, para ofrecer
soluciones de control diferentes (Control de Logica Fuzzy (FLC) y PID), basados en
la informacion visual obtenida con el fin de lograr la estabilidad de vuelo, asi como
realizar la maniobra correcta para evitar posibles colisiones y seguir los puntos de
referencia.
Todos los algoritmos propuestos han sido verificados con vuelos reales en ambientes
exteriores e interiores, tomando en consideracion condiciones visuales como
la iluminacion y las texturas. Los resultados obtenidos han sido validados con otros
sistemas: como el sistema de captura de movimiento VICON y DGPS en el caso del
algoritmo de estimacion de la posicion y orientacion. Ademas, los algoritmos propuestos
han sido comparados con trabajos anteriores recogidos en el estado del arte
con resultados que demuestran una mejora de la precision y la robustez de los algoritmos
propuestos.
Esta tesis doctoral concluye que los sensores visuales tienen las ventajes de tener
un peso ligero y un bajo consumo y, proporcionar informacion fiable, lo cual lo
hace una poderosa herramienta en los sistemas de navegacion para aumentar la

Vision-based grasping of unknown objects to improve disabled people autonomy.
International audienceThis paper presents our contribution to vision based robotic assistance for people with disabilities. The rehabilitative robotic arms currently available on the market are directly controlled by adaptive devices, which lead to increasing strain on the user's disability. To reduce the need for user's actions, we propose here several vision-based solutions to automatize the grasping of unknown objects. Neither appearance data bases nor object models are considered. All the needed information is computed on line. This paper focuses on the positioning of the camera and the gripper approach. For each of those two steps, two alternative solutions are provided. All the methods have been tested and validated on robotics cells. Some have already been integrated into our mobile robot SAM
Adaptive Neuro-Filtering Based Visual Servo Control of a Robotic Manipulator
This paper focuses on the solutions to flexibly regulate robotic by vision. A new visual servoing technique based on the Kalman filtering (KF) combined neural network (NN) is developed, which need not have any calibration parameters of robotic system. The statistic knowledge of the system noise and observation noise are first given by Gaussian white noise sequences, the nonlinear mapping between robotic vision and motor spaces are then on-line identified using standard Kalman recursive equations. In real robotic workshops, the perfect statistic knowledge of the noise is not easy to be derived, thus an adaptive neuro-filtering approach based on KF is also studied for mapping on-line estimation in this paper. The Kalman recursive equations are improved by a feedforward NN, in which the neural estimator dynamic adjusts its weights to minimize estimation error of robotic vision-motor mapping, without the knowledge of noise variances. Finally, the proposed visual servoing based on adaptive neuro-filtering has been successfully implemented in robotic pose regulation, and the experimental results demonstrate its validity and practicality for a six-degree-of-freedom (DOF) robotic system which the hand-eye without calibrated
Visual Servoing For Robotic Positioning And Tracking Systems
Visual servoing is a robot control method in which camera sensors are used inside the control loop and visual feedback is introduced into the robot control loop to enhance the robot control performance in accomplishing tasks in unstructured environments. In general, visual servoing can be categorized into image-based visual servoing (IBVS), position-based visual servoing (PBVS), and hybrid approach. To improve the performance and robustness of visual servoing systems, the research on IBVS for robotic positioning and tracking systems mainly focuses on aspects of camera configuration, image features, pose estimation, and depth determination.
In the first part of this research, two novel multiple camera configurations of visual servoing systems are proposed for robotic manufacturing systems for positioning large-scale workpieces. The main advantage of these two multiple camera configurations is that the depths of target objects or target features are constant or can be determined precisely by using computer vision. Hence the accuracy of the interaction matrix is guaranteed, and thus the positioning performances of visual servoing systems can be improved remarkably. The simulation results show that the proposed multiple camera configurations of visual servoing for large-scale manufacturing systems can satisfy the demand of high-precision positioning and assembly in the aerospace industry.
In the second part of this research, two improved image features for planar central symmetrical-shaped objects are proposed based on image moment invariants, which can represent the pose of target objects with respect to camera frame. A visual servoing controller based on the proposed image moment features is designed and thus the control performance of the robotic tracking system is improved compared with the method based on the commonly used image moment features. Experimental results on a 6-DOF robot visual servoing system demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method.
Lastly, to address the challenge of choosing proper image features for planar objects to get maximal decoupled structure of the interaction matrix, the neural network (NN) is applied as the estimator of target object poses with respect to camera frame based on the image moment invariants. Compared with previous methods, this scheme avoids image interaction matrix singularity and image local minima in IBVS. Furthermore, the analytical form of depth computation is given by using classical geometrical primitives and image moment invariants. A visual servoing controller is designed and the tracking performance is enhanced for robotic tracking systems. Experimental results on a 6-DOF robot system are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme

Design and Development of Robotic Part Assembly System under Vision Guidance
Robots are widely used for part assembly across manufacturing industries to attain high productivity through automation. The automated mechanical part assembly system contributes a major share in production process. An appropriate vision guided robotic assembly system further minimizes the lead time and improve quality of the end product by suitable object detection methods and robot control strategies. An approach is made for the development of robotic part assembly system with the aid of industrial vision system. This approach is accomplished mainly in three phases. The first phase of research is mainly focused on feature extraction and object detection techniques. A hybrid edge detection method is developed by combining both fuzzy inference rule and wavelet transformation. The performance of this edge detector is quantitatively analysed and compared with widely used edge detectors like Canny, Sobel, Prewitt, mathematical morphology based, Robert, Laplacian of Gaussian and wavelet transformation based. A comparative study is performed for choosing a suitable corner detection method. The corner detection technique used in the study are curvature scale space, Wang-Brady and Harris method. The successful implementation of vision guided robotic system is dependent on the system configuration like eye-in-hand or eye-to-hand. In this configuration, there may be a case that the captured images of the parts is corrupted by geometric transformation such as scaling, rotation, translation and blurring due to camera or robot motion. Considering such issue, an image reconstruction method is proposed by using orthogonal Zernike moment invariants. The suggested method uses a selection process of moment order to reconstruct the affected image. This enables the object detection method efficient. In the second phase, the proposed system is developed by integrating the vision system and robot system. The proposed feature extraction and object detection methods are tested and found efficient for the purpose. In the third stage, robot navigation based on visual feedback are proposed. In the control scheme, general moment invariants, Legendre moment and Zernike moment invariants are used. The selection of best combination of visual features are performed by measuring the hamming distance between all possible combinations of visual features. This results in finding the best combination that makes the image based visual servoing control efficient. An indirect method is employed in determining the moment invariants for Legendre moment and Zernike moment. These moments are used as they are robust to noise. The control laws, based on these three global feature of image, perform efficiently to navigate the robot in the desire environment
