Zhang, Balancing of parallel U-shaped assembly Lines, Computers & Operations Research, http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.cor.2015.05.014A new hybrid assembly line design, called Parallel U-shaped Assembly Line system, is introduced and characterised along with numerical examples for the first time. Different from existing studies on U-shaped lines, we combine the advantages of two individual line configurations (namely parallel lines and U-shaped lines) and create an opportunity for assigning tasks to multi-line workstations located in between two adjacent U-shaped lines with the aim of maximising resource utilisation. Utilisation of crossover workstations, in which tasks from opposite areas of a same U-shaped line can be performed, is also one of the main advantages of the U-shaped lines. As in traditional U-shaped line configurations, the newly proposed line configuration also supports the utilisation of crossover workstations. An efficient heuristic algorithm is developed to find well-balanced solutions for the proposed line configurations. Test cases derived from existing studies and modified in accordance with the proposed system in this study are solved using the proposed heuristic algorithm. The comparison of results obtained when the lines are balanced independently and when the lines are balanced together (in parallel to each other) clearly indicates that the parallelisation of U-shaped lines helps decrease the need for workforce significantly.Balikesir UniversityTurkish Council of Higher Educatio

Using Hybrid Fuzzy PROMETHEE II and Fuzzy Binary Goal Programming for Risk Ranking: A Case Study of Highway Construction Projects

    Get PDF
Multi attribute decision making methods are considered as one of the most useful methods for solving ranking problems. In some decision making problems, while the alternatives for corresponding criteria are compared in a pairwise comparison manner, if the criteria are inherently fuzzy, debates will arise in ranking alternatives due to the closeness of the values of the criteria. In this research, the fuzzy PROMETHEE II is proposed as a solution in such conditions. First, using the ANP method, the criteria are weighted. Then, the ranking process is accomplished both by the fuzzy PROMETHEE II and the fuzzy TOPSIS methods. Finally, calculating Spearman correlation coefficient, the results of these two approaches are compared. Then, the most important risks are selected via the fuzzy binary goal programming and ranked again through the fuzzy PROMETHEE II and fuzzy TOPSIS methods finally, in the last step, these ranking two are compared. As a case study, highway construction risks are ranked through this method.</p

Cyclical Nurse Scheduling in Shah Alam Hospital Using Goal Programming

A shift work schedule is extremely important to obtain the optimum result of work allocation since it involves 24 hours of continuous services. Every nurse could not avoid shift work schedule since their services are very important towards the patients in the hospital. The major objective of the study is to propose a cyclical nurse scheduling in the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) at Shah Alam hospital using Goal Programming. It is to help the head nurse to spend less effort on building new schedules periodically and increase the satisfaction among nurses by providing fairness towards their schedules. There were nine hard constraints and three soft constraints for the nurse scheduling model. The results presented the optimal solution where all goals were achieved thus, it provided a fair schedule for 15 nurses in 15 days. Then, the schedule pattern was rotated among nurses based on the 15 schedules set in 225 days. The first schedule set will be used by the nurse for the first 15 days, then will be continuously rotated for another 15 days until all the nurses reached and experienced every 15 sets of the schedule. The schedule was generated using LINGO software which it took a short time to solve the problem

Simple assembly line balancing problem under task deterioration

This paper introduces the effect of task deterioration in simple assembly line balancing problem. In many realistic assembly lines, a deterioration task is considered when a task is started earlier than the assigned time since the station time is constant and the earliness of the task does not reduce the cycle time. This phenomenon is known as deteriorating tasks. Therefore, we seek an optimal assignment and schedule of tasks in workstations, in order to minimize the number of stations for a given cycle time, which is known as SALBP-1. For this purpose, a mathematical model is proposed. Since the pure SALBP-1 is proved to be NP-hard and considering task deterioration complicates problem further, we propose a genetic algorithm for solving such problem. Several well-known test problems are solved to study the performance of the proposed approach

Decomposition of Manufacturing Processes: A Review

    Get PDF
Manufacturing is a global activity that started during the industrial revolution in the late 19th century to cater for the large-scale production of products. Since then, manufacturing has changed tremendously through the innovations of technology, processes, materials, communication and transportation. The major challenge facing manufacturing is to produce more products using less material, less energy and less involvement of labour. To face these challenges, manufacturing companies must have a strategy and competitive priority in order for them to compete in a dynamic market. A review of the literature on the decomposition of manufacturing processes outlines three main processes, namely: high volume, medium volume and low volume. The decomposition shows that each sub process has its own characteristics and depends on the nature of the firm’s business. Two extreme processes are continuous line production (fast extreme) and project shop (slow extreme). Other processes are in between these two extremes of the manufacturing spectrum. Process flow patterns become less complex with cellular, line and continuous flow compared with jobbing and project. The review also indicates that when the product is high variety and low volume, project or functional production is applied

Experimental assessment of the productivity improvement when using U-shaped production cells with variable takt time

    No full text
International audiencePurpose – The aims of this research is to discuss the benefits of U layout for production cell operating in variable takt time. Different experiments were conducted using benchmarks, in order to highlight the performance gap between a straight cell and a U-cell. Design/methodology/approach – The implementation of the production cell, in U-shaped or in straight line, is optimized through linear programming based on the number of operators. The two corresponding programs, in Mosel language, use the same approach, in order to not introduce defects in the comparison of results. The study used our own datasets and well known academic benchmarks. Findings – A comparison between the obtained takt times, with equivalent operating conditions, in U-cell and straight cell was conducted. A significant increase of the production rate was observed. This increase has often exceeded 10 per cent to reach 32 per cent. All the experiments show that, with the same number of operators, a cell in a U layout is always at least as efficient, in terms of reachable production rates, than an equivalent cell in a linear layout. 96 per cent give an improvement of production rate. Moreover, the dispersion of the U-cell results is weaker, which suggests that the U-layout gives, in more robust manner, better performances.Research limitations/implications – The results were obtained through a study of various academic benchmarks. The results must be validated on industrial situations.Practical implications – This paper will be very useful for researchers and practitioners in order to understand lean implementations and its derived benefits. This paper will allow them evaluating and analysing the expected benefits of the implementation of the production cell in U-shaped (operating in variable takt time).Originality/value – U-Cells constitute an appropriate solution for a layout of any kind of production cells with variable structure. When facing a significant variation in the demand, the response consists in modulating the number of operators assigned to the cell. This study addresses jointly the problem of U-cells layout and the operation in variable takt time
