Through the eye of a needle: the story of two academics' use of fabric crafts to make defiant messages.

This paper is the result of our joint reflections on our experiences of creating 'quilts' for the January 2007 New Zealand Quilt Symposium, their acceptance in the 'Human Rights (HR) Challenge' (Bella) and the 'Thinking Outside the Square Challenge' (Joyce). In July, Bella, with grace and good humour, succumbed to an aggressive form of cancer. She was adamant that these stories needed to be told and Bella's story is presented below in the original. When seen through the eye of her now stilled needle, her words seem particularly wise and insightful

Previously the dragonflies (Odonata, Libellulidae) Ladona julia and Nannothemis bella were known in Ohio from only one extant population each: L. julia from extreme northwest Ohio in Williams County and N. bella from west-central Ohio in Champaign County. During the summer of 2000 populations of each of these species were found in close proximity to each other at Singer Lake, a wetlands complex in southern Summit County in northeastern Ohio. This new location is also home to a population of another rare Ohio dragonfly, Dorocordulia libera (Odonata, Corduliidae) that was discovered during 1999. The Singer Lake wetlands are proving to be a very significant habitat for Ohio Odonata

A new species group of the genus Epicauta Dejean of Southern South America, the bella group (Coleoptera: Meloidae)

Epicauta (Coleoptera: Meloideae) includes two subgenera, and within the nominotypical subgenus several species groups. Analyzing species of southern South America, a set of species of Epicauta has the particularity to present two distinctive characters which separates this group from the other species groups of American Epicauta: color pattern of pubescence in elytra is not coincident with color pattern of tegument and endophalic hook robust. Based on these characters I propose a new group of species herein named bella group. This group includes the Neotropical species Epicauta bella Mäklin, E. brunneipennis (Haag-Rutemberg), E. diagramma (Burmeister), E. griseonigra (Fairmaire), E. luctifera (Fairmaire), E. riojana (Fairmaire) (New status), and E. zebra (Dohrn). This group is endemic of southern South America, inhabiting the Chaco biogeographical subregion, mainly in the arid northern areas of Argentina. Here we redefine the species of the bella group, consider new characters, illustrate the species in the group, provide maps of their distribution, and a key to identify them.Fil: Campos Soldini, Maria Paula.
