    Deep convolutional neural network with 2D spectral energy maps for fault diagnosis of gearboxes under variable speed.

    For industrial safety, correct classification of gearbox fault conditions is necessary. One of the most crucial tasks in data-driven fault diagnosis is determining the best set of features by analyzing the statistical parameters of the signals. However, under variable speed conditions, these statistical parameters are incapable of uncovering the dynamic characteristics of different fault conditions of gearboxes. Later, several deep learning algorithms are used to improve the performance of the feature selection process, but domain knowledge expertise is still necessary. In this paper, a combination domain knowledge analysis and a deep neural network is proposed. By using the input acoustic emission (AE) signal, a two-dimensional spectrum energy map (2D AE-SEM) is created to form an identical fault pattern for various speed conditions of gearboxes. Then, a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) is proposed to investigate the detailed structure of the 2D input for final fault classification. This 2D AE-SEM offers a graphical depiction of acoustic emission spectral characteristics. Our proposed system offers vigorous and dynamic classification performance through the proposed DCNN with a high diagnostic fault classification accuracy of 96.37% in all considered scenarios

    Acoustic spectral imaging and transfer learning for reliable bearing fault diagnosis under variable speed conditions.

    Incipient fault diagnosis of a bearing requires robust feature representation for an accurate condition-based monitoring system. Existing fault diagnosis schemes are mostly confined to manual features and traditional machine learning approaches such as artificial neural networks (ANN) and support vector machines (SVM). These handcrafted features require substantial human expertise and domain knowledge. In addition, these feature characteristics vary with the bearing's rotational speed. Thus, such methods do not yield the best results under variable speed conditions. To address this issue, this paper presents a reliable fault diagnosis scheme based on acoustic spectral imaging (ASI) of acoustic emission (AE) signals as a precise health state. These health states are further utilized with transfer learning, which is a machine learning technique, which shares knowledge with convolutional neural networks (CNN) for accurate diagnosis under variable operating conditions. In ASI, the amplitudes of the spectral components of the windowed time-domain acoustic emission signal are transformed into spectrum imaging. ASI provides a visual representation of acoustic emission spectral features in images. This ensures enhanced spectral images for transfer learning (TL) testing and training, and thus provides a robust classifier technique with high diagnostic accuracy

    Fine-grained fault recognition method for shaft orbit of rotary machine based on convolutional neural network

    In the fault diagnosis of the shaft orbit of rotating machinery, there are few prejudgments about the severity of the faults, which is very important for fault repair. Therefore, a fine-grained recognition method is proposed to detect different severity faults by shaft orbit. Since different shaft orbits represent different type and different severity of faults, the convolutional neural network (CNN) is applied for identifying the shaft orbits to recognize the type and severity of the fault. The recognition rate of proposed fine-grained fault identification method is 97.96 % on the simulated shaft orbit database, and it takes only 0.31 milliseconds for the recognition of single sample. Experimental result indicated that the classification performance of the proposed method are better than the traditional machine learning models. Moreover, the method is applied for the identification of the measured shaft orbits of rotor with different degree of imbalance faults, and the testing accuracy of the experiments in measured shaft orbits is 97.14 %, which has verified the effectiveness of the proposed fine-grained fault recognition method

    A multitask-aided transfer learning-based diagnostic framework for bearings under inconsistent working conditions.

    Rolling element bearings are a vital part of rotating machines and their sudden failure can result in huge economic losses as well as physical causalities. Popular bearing fault diagnosis techniques include statistical feature analysis of time, frequency, or time-frequency domain data. These engineered features are susceptible to variations under inconsistent machine operation due to the non-stationary, non-linear, and complex nature of the recorded vibration signals. To address these issues, numerous deep learning-based frameworks have been proposed in the literature. However, the logical reasoning behind crack severities and the longer training times needed to identify multiple health characteristics at the same time still pose challenges. Therefore, in this work, a diagnosis framework is proposed that uses higher-order spectral analysis and multitask learning (MTL), while also incorporating transfer learning (TL). The idea is to first preprocess the vibration signals recorded from a bearing to look for distinct patterns for a given fault type under inconsistent working conditions, e.g., variable motor speeds and loads, multiple crack severities, compound faults, and ample noise. Later, these bispectra are provided as an input to the proposed MTL-based convolutional neural network (CNN) to identify the speed and the health conditions, simultaneously. Finally, the TL-based approach is adopted to identify bearing faults in the presence of multiple crack severities. The proposed diagnostic framework is evaluated on several datasets and the experimental results are compared with several state-of-the-art diagnostic techniques to validate the superiority of the proposed model under inconsistent working conditions

    Effective Crack Detection in Railway Axles Using Vibration Signals and WPT Energy

    Crack detection for railway axles is key to avoiding catastrophic accidents. Currently, non-destructive testing is used for that purpose. The present work applies vibration signal analysis to diagnose cracks in real railway axles installed on a real Y21 bogie working on a rig. Vibration signals were obtained from two wheelsets with cracks at the middle section of the axle with depths from 5.7 to 15 mm, at several conditions of load and speed. Vibration signals were processed by means of wavelet packet transform energy. Energies obtained were used to train an artificial neural network, with reliable diagnosis results. The success rate of 5.7 mm defects was 96.27%, and the reliability in detecting larger defects reached almost 100%, with a false alarm ratio lower than 5.5%.The research work described in this paper was supported by the Spanish Government through the MAQ-STATUS DPI2015-69325-C2-1-R project.     Short-term forecasting of wind energy: A comparison of deep learning frameworks

    Wind energy has been recognized as the most promising and economical renewable energy source, attracting increasing attention in recent years. However, considering the variability and uncertainty of wind energy, accurate forecasting is crucial to propel high levels of wind energy penetration within electricity markets. In this paper, a comparative framework is proposed where a suite of long short-term memory (LSTM) recurrent neural networks (RNN) models, inclusive of standard, bidirectional, stacked, convolutional, and autoencoder architectures, are implemented to address the existing gaps and limitations of reported wind power forecasting methodologies. These integrated networks are implemented through an iterative process of varying hyperparameters to better assess their effect, and the overall performance of each architecture, when tackling one-hour to three-hours ahead wind power forecasting. The corresponding validation is carried out through hourly wind power data from the Spanish electricity market, collected between 2014 and 2020. The proposed comparative error analysis shows that, overall, the models tend to showcase low error variability and better performance when the networks are able to learn in weekly sequences. The model with the best performance in forecasting one-hour ahead wind power is the stacked LSTM, implemented with weekly learning input sequences, with an average MAPE improvement of roughly 6, 7, and 49%, when compared to standard, bidirectional, and convolutional LSTM models, respectively. In the case of two to three-hours ahead forecasting, the model with the best overall performance is the bidirectional LSTM implemented with weekly learning input sequences, showcasing an average improved MAPE performance from 2 to 23% when compared to the other LSTM architectures implemented

    Evaluation of the performance of a composite profile at elevated temperatures using finite element and hybrid artificial intelligence techniques

    It is very important to keep structures and constructional elements in service during and after exposure to elevated temperatures. Investigation of the structural behaviour of different components and structures at elevated temperatures is an approach to manipulate the serviceability of the structures during heat exposure. Channel connectors are widely used shear connectors not only for their appealing mechanical properties but also for their workability and cost-effective nature. In this study, a finite element (FE) evaluation was performed on an authentic composite model, and the behaviour of the channel shear connector at elevated temperature was examined. Furthermore, a novel hybrid intelligence algorithm based on a feature-selection trait with the incorporation of particle swarm optimization (PSO) and multi-layer perceptron (MLP) algorithms has been developed to predict the slip response of the channel. The hybrid intelligence algorithm that uses artificial neural networks is performed on derived data from the FE study. Finally, the obtained numerical results are compared with extreme learning machine (ELM) and radial basis function (RBF) results. The MLP-PSO represented dramatically accurate results for slip value prediction at elevated temperatures. The results proved the active presence of the channels, especially to improve the stiffness and loading capacity of the composite beam. Although the height enhances the ductility, stiffness is significantly reduced at elevated temperatures. According to the results, temperature, failure load, the height of connector and concrete block strength are the key governing parameters for composite floor design against high temperatures
