System-on-chip Computing and Interconnection Architectures for Telecommunications and Signal Processing
This dissertation proposes novel architectures and design techniques targeting SoC building blocks for telecommunications and signal processing applications.
Hardware implementation of Low-Density Parity-Check decoders is approached at both the algorithmic and the architecture level. Low-Density Parity-Check codes are a promising coding scheme for future communication standards due to their outstanding error correction performance.
This work proposes a methodology for analyzing effects of finite precision arithmetic on error correction performance and hardware complexity. The methodology is throughout employed for co-designing the decoder. First, a low-complexity check node based on the P-output decoding principle is designed and characterized on a CMOS standard-cells library. Results demonstrate implementation loss below 0.2 dB down to BER of 10^{-8} and a saving in complexity up to 59% with respect to other works in recent literature. High-throughput and low-latency issues are addressed with modified single-phase decoding schedules. A new "memory-aware" schedule is proposed requiring down to 20% of memory with respect to the traditional two-phase flooding decoding. Additionally, throughput is doubled and logic complexity reduced of 12%. These advantages are traded-off with error correction performance, thus making the solution attractive only for long codes, as those adopted in the DVB-S2 standard. The "layered decoding" principle is extended to those codes not specifically conceived for this technique. Proposed architectures exhibit complexity savings in the order of 40% for both area and power consumption figures, while implementation loss is smaller than 0.05 dB.
Most modern communication standards employ Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing as part of their physical layer. The core of OFDM is the Fast Fourier Transform and its inverse in charge of symbols (de)modulation. Requirements on throughput and energy efficiency call for FFT hardware implementation, while ubiquity of FFT suggests the design of parametric, re-configurable and re-usable IP hardware macrocells. In this context, this thesis describes an FFT/IFFT core compiler particularly suited for implementation of OFDM communication systems. The tool employs an accuracy-driven configuration engine which automatically profiles the internal arithmetic and generates a core with minimum operands bit-width and thus minimum circuit complexity. The engine performs a closed-loop optimization over three different internal arithmetic models (fixed-point, block floating-point and convergent block floating-point) using the numerical accuracy budget given by the user as a reference point. The flexibility and re-usability of the proposed macrocell are illustrated through several case studies which encompass all current state-of-the-art OFDM communications standards (WLAN, WMAN, xDSL, DVB-T/H, DAB and UWB). Implementations results are presented for two deep sub-micron standard-cells libraries (65 and 90 nm) and commercially available FPGA devices. Compared with other FFT core compilers, the proposed environment produces macrocells with lower circuit complexity and same system level performance (throughput, transform size and numerical accuracy).
The final part of this dissertation focuses on the Network-on-Chip design paradigm whose goal is building scalable communication infrastructures connecting hundreds of core. A low-complexity link architecture for mesochronous on-chip communication is discussed. The link enables skew constraint looseness in the clock tree synthesis, frequency speed-up, power consumption reduction and faster back-end turnarounds. The proposed architecture reaches a maximum clock frequency of 1 GHz on 65 nm low-leakage CMOS standard-cells library. In a complex test case with a full-blown NoC infrastructure, the link overhead is only 3% of chip area and 0.5% of leakage power consumption.
Finally, a new methodology, named metacoding, is proposed. Metacoding generates correct-by-construction technology independent RTL codebases for NoC building blocks. The RTL coding phase is abstracted and modeled with an Object Oriented framework, integrated within a commercial tool for IP packaging (Synopsys CoreTools suite). Compared with traditional coding styles based on pre-processor directives, metacoding produces 65% smaller codebases and reduces the configurations to verify up to three orders of magnitude
Baseband analog front-end and digital back-end for reconfigurable multi-standard terminals
Multimedia applications are driving wireless network operators to add high-speed data services such as Edge (E-GPRS), WCDMA (UMTS) and WLAN (IEEE 802.11a,b,g) to the existing GSM network. This creates the need for multi-mode cellular handsets that support a wide range of communication standards, each with a different RF frequency, signal bandwidth, modulation scheme etc. This in turn generates several design challenges for the analog and digital building blocks of the physical layer. In addition to the above-mentioned protocols, mobile devices often include Bluetooth, GPS, FM-radio and TV services that can work concurrently with data and voice communication. Multi-mode, multi-band, and multi-standard mobile terminals must satisfy all these different requirements. Sharing and/or switching transceiver building blocks in these handsets is mandatory in order to extend battery life and/or reduce cost. Only adaptive circuits that are able to reconfigure themselves within the handover time can meet the design requirements of a single receiver or transmitter covering all the different standards while ensuring seamless inter-interoperability. This paper presents analog and digital base-band circuits that are able to support GSM (with Edge), WCDMA (UMTS), WLAN and Bluetooth using reconfigurable building blocks. Layout area models for high-level synthesis
Traditionally, the common cost functions, the number of functional units, registers and selector inputs, are used in high level synthesis as quality measures. However, these traditional design quality measures may not reflect the real physical design. To establish quality measures based on the physical designs, we propose layout estimation models for two commonly used data path and control layout architectures. The results show that quality measures deriving from our models give an accurate prediction of the final layout. The results also show that traditional cost functions are not good indicators for optimization in high level synthesis
Design of multimedia processor based on metric computation
Media-processing applications, such as signal processing, 2D and 3D graphics
rendering, and image compression, are the dominant workloads in many embedded
systems today. The real-time constraints of those media applications have
taxing demands on today's processor performances with low cost, low power and
reduced design delay. To satisfy those challenges, a fast and efficient
strategy consists in upgrading a low cost general purpose processor core. This
approach is based on the personalization of a general RISC processor core
according the target multimedia application requirements. Thus, if the extra
cost is justified, the general purpose processor GPP core can be enforced with
instruction level coprocessors, coarse grain dedicated hardware, ad hoc
memories or new GPP cores. In this way the final design solution is tailored to
the application requirements. The proposed approach is based on three main
steps: the first one is the analysis of the targeted application using
efficient metrics. The second step is the selection of the appropriate
architecture template according to the first step results and recommendations.
The third step is the architecture generation. This approach is experimented
using various image and video algorithms showing its feasibility
Pixie: A heterogeneous Virtual Coarse-Grained Reconfigurable Array for high performance image processing applications
Coarse-Grained Reconfigurable Arrays (CGRAs) enable ease of programmability
and result in low development costs. They enable the ease of use specifically
in reconfigurable computing applications. The smaller cost of compilation and
reduced reconfiguration overhead enables them to become attractive platforms
for accelerating high-performance computing applications such as image
processing. The CGRAs are ASICs and therefore, expensive to produce. However,
Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) are relatively cheaper for low volume
products but they are not so easily programmable. We combine best of both
worlds by implementing a Virtual Coarse-Grained Reconfigurable Array (VCGRA) on
FPGA. VCGRAs are a trade off between FPGA with large routing overheads and
ASICs. In this perspective we present a novel heterogeneous Virtual
Coarse-Grained Reconfigurable Array (VCGRA) called "Pixie" which is suitable
for implementing high performance image processing applications. The proposed
VCGRA contains generic processing elements and virtual channels that are
described using the Hardware Description Language VHDL. Both elements have been
optimized by using the parameterized configuration tool flow and result in a
resource reduction of 24% for each processing elements and 82% for each virtual

A Design Methodology for Space-Time Adapter
This paper presents a solution to efficiently explore the design space of
communication adapters. In most digital signal processing (DSP) applications,
the overall architecture of the system is significantly affected by
communication architecture, so the designers need specifically optimized
adapters. By explicitly modeling these communications within an effective
graph-theoretic model and analysis framework, we automatically generate an
optimized architecture, named Space-Time AdapteR (STAR). Our design flow inputs
a C description of Input/Output data scheduling, and user requirements
(throughput, latency, parallelism...), and formalizes communication constraints
through a Resource Constraints Graph (RCG). The RCG properties enable an
efficient architecture space exploration in order to synthesize a STAR
component. The proposed approach has been tested to design an industrial data

Back-annotation for interactive data path synthesis
In order to take into account physical design effects, a designer needs a feedback mechanism during interactive data path synthesis. In this paper, we propose a hypergraph model and a back-annotation algorithm which provide a feedback mechanism for back-annotation from physical designs to behavioral descriptions. Given a control data flow graph and its structural design, this back-annotation technique cannot only evaluate the design quality but can also feedback the delay to each edge and node in the graph. Therefore, a designer can identify the critical paths and improve the design. The hypergraph model and the back-annotation algorithm allow us to bridge the gap between the behavioral description and the physical design

A new partitioning approach for layout synthesis from register-transfer netlists
Most of the IC today are described and documented using heiarchical netlists. In addition to gates, latches, and flip-flops, these netlists include sliceable register-transfer components such as registers, counters, adders, ALUs, shifters, register files, and multiplexers. Usually, these components are decomposed into basic gates, latches, and flip-flops, and are laid out using standard cells. The standard cell architecture requires excessive routing area, and does not exploit the bit-sliced nature of register-transfer components. In this paper, we present a new sliced-layout architecture to alleviate the preceding problems. We also describe partitioning algorithms that are used to generate the floorplan for this layout architecture. The partitioning algorithms not only select the best suited layout style for each component, but also consider critical paths, I/O pin locations, and connections between blocks. This approach improves the overall area utilization and minimizes the total wire length
