A Polynomial-time Algorithm for Outerplanar Diameter Improvement
The Outerplanar Diameter Improvement problem asks, given a graph and an
integer , whether it is possible to add edges to in a way that the
resulting graph is outerplanar and has diameter at most . We provide a
dynamic programming algorithm that solves this problem in polynomial time.
Outerplanar Diameter Improvement demonstrates several structural analogues to
the celebrated and challenging Planar Diameter Improvement problem, where the
resulting graph should, instead, be planar. The complexity status of this
latter problem is open.Comment: 24 page
Plane augmentation of plane graphs to meet parity constraints
A plane topological graph G=(V, E) is a graph drawn in the plane whose vertices are points in the plane and whose edges are simple curves that do not intersect, except at their endpoints. Given a plane topological graph G=(V, E) and a set CG of parity constraints, in which every vertex has assigned a parity constraint on its degree, either even or odd, we say that G is topologically augmentable to meet CG if there exists a set E' of new edges, disjoint with E, such that G'=(V, E¿E') is noncrossing and meets all parity constraints. In this paper, we prove that the problem of deciding if a plane topological graph is topologically augmentable to meet parity constraints is NP-complete, even if the set of vertices that must change their parities is V or the set of vertices with odd degree. In particular, deciding if a plane topological graph can be augmented to a Eulerian plane topological graph is NP-complete. Analogous complexity results are obtained, when the augmentation must be done by a plane topological perfect matching between the vertices not meeting their parities. We extend these hardness results to planar graphs, when the augmented graph must be planar, and to plane geometric graphs (plane topological graphs whose edges are straight-line segments). In addition, when it is required that the augmentation is made by a plane geometric perfect matching between the vertices not meeting their parities, we also prove that this augmentation problem is NP-complete for plane geometric paths. For the particular family of maximal outerplane graphs, we characterize maximal outerplane graphs that are topological augmentable to satisfy a set of parity constraints. We also provide a polynomial time algorithm that decides if a maximal outerplane graph is topologically augmentable to meet parity constraints, and if so, produces a set of edges with minimum cardinality
Algorithms for drawing planar graphs
onderlinge relaties direct blijken.

B-VPG Representation of AT-free Outerplanar Graphs
B-VPG graphs are intersection graphs of axis-parallel line segments in
the plane. In this paper, we show that all AT-free outerplanar graphs are
B-VPG. We first prove that every AT-free outerplanar graph is an induced
subgraph of a biconnected outerpath (biconnected outerplanar graphs whose weak
dual is a path) and then we design a B-VPG drawing procedure for
biconnected outerpaths. Our proofs are constructive and give a polynomial time
B-VPG drawing algorithm for the class.
We also characterize all subgraphs of biconnected outerpaths and name this
graph class "linear outerplanar". This class is a proper superclass of AT-free
outerplanar graphs and a proper subclass of outerplanar graphs with pathwidth
at most 2. It turns out that every graph in this class can be realized both as
an induced subgraph and as a spanning subgraph of (different) biconnected
outerpaths.Comment: A preliminary version, which did not contain the characterization of
linear outerplanar graphs (Section 3), was presented in the
International Conference on Algorithms and Discrete Applied Mathematics
(CALDAM) 2022. The definition of linear outerplanar graphs in this paper
differs from that in the preliminary version and hence Section 4 is ne
Tree comparison: enumeration and application to cheminformatics
Graphs are a well-known data structure used in many application domains that rely on relationships between individual entities. Examples are social networks, where the users may be in friendship with each other, road networks, where one-way or bidirectional roads connect crossings, and work package assignments, where workers are assigned to tasks. In chem- and bioinformatics, molecules are often represented as molecular graphs, where vertices represent atoms, and bonds between them are represented by edges connecting the vertices. Since there is an ever-increasing amount of data that can be treated as graphs, fast algorithms are needed to compare such graphs. A well-researched concept to compare two graphs is the maximum common subgraph. On the one hand, this allows finding substructures that are common to both input graphs. On the other hand, we can derive a similarity score from the maximum common subgraph. A practical application is rational drug design which involves molecular similarity searches.
In this thesis, we study the maximum common subgraph problem, which entails finding a largest graph, which is isomorphic to subgraphs of two input graphs. We focus on restrictions that allow polynomial-time algorithms with a low exponent. An example is the maximum common subtree of two input trees. We succeed in improving the previously best-known time bound. Additionally, we provide a lower time bound under certain assumptions. We study a generalization of the maximum common subtree problem, the block-and-bridge preserving maximum common induced subgraph problem between outerplanar graphs. This problem is motivated by the application to cheminformatics. First, the vast majority of drugs modeled as molecular graphs is outerplanar, and second, the blocks correspond to the ring structures and the bridges to atom chains or linkers. If we allow disconnected common subgraphs, the problem becomes NP-hard even for trees as input. We propose a second generalization of the maximum common subtree problem, which allows skipping vertices in the input trees while maintaining polynomial running time.
Since a maximum common subgraph is not unique in general, we investigate the problem to enumerate all maximum solutions. We do this for both the maximum common subtree problem and the block-and-bridge preserving maximum common induced subgraph problem between outerplanar graphs. An arising subproblem which we analyze is the enumeration of maximum weight matchings in bipartite graphs. We support a weight function between the vertices and edges for all proposed common subgraph methods in this thesis. Thus the objective is to compute a common subgraph of maximum weight. The weights may be integral or real-valued, including negative values. A special case of using such a weight function is computing common subgraph isomorphisms between labeled graphs, where labels between mapped vertices and edges must be equal. An experimental study evaluates the practical running times and the usefulness of our block-and-bridge preserving maximum common induced subgraph algorithm against state of the art algorithms
Which point sets admit a k-angulation?
For k >= 3, a k-angulation is a 2-connected plane graph in which every
internal face is a k-gon. We say that a point set P admits a plane graph G if
there is a straight-line drawing of G that maps V(G) onto P and has the same
facial cycles and outer face as G. We investigate the conditions under which a
point set P admits a k-angulation and find that, for sets containing at least
2k^2 points, the only obstructions are those that follow from Euler's formula.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figure
Compatible matchings in geometric graphs
Two non-crossing geometric graphs on the same set of points are compatible if their union
is also non-crossing. In this paper, we prove that every graph G that has an outerplanar embedding
admits a non-crossing perfect matching compatible with G. Moreover, for non-crossing geometric trees
and simple polygons, we study bounds on the minimum number of edges that a compatible non-crossing
perfect matching must share with the tree or the polygon. We also give bounds on the maximal size of
a compatible matching (not necessarily perfect) that is disjoint from the tree or the polygon.Postprint (published version
