    Translation is an effort to transfer messages from one language (source language) to another language (target language) or an attempt to re-express messages in one language (target language) in another language (source language). Students need to learn about translation, especially students at universities who take English education. Moreover, people who like reading novels, magazines, newspapers, comics, poetry, and listening to English songs will enjoy it if the translator can translate with the right sentence. This study aimed to find out how the English collocations in J.K Rowling’s Novel “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” are translated into the Indonesian version. The research method for this research was used qualitative analysis. There are 51 collocations found in chapter one until four of J.K Rowling’s Novel “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”, which consist of 36 group of words for Lexical Collocation and 15 group of words for Grammatical Collocation. Out of the seven-translation procedures, four are used in this research. As a result of the analysis, literal translation occurs as the translation procedure that is frequently used in translating English collocations. There are 39 Literal Translation procedure, 3 Transposition, 6 Equivalence, and 3 Modulation translation procedure. The data collection procedures were performed by reading, highlighting and identifying, collecting by listing, classifying, and checking the English collocations. In this research, the instrument is the researcher herself as the main instrument. As a human instrument, in this study the researcher acted to collect appropriate data.     Discussion is a methodological instrument, which helps to perfect students’ communicative competence and the central process through which students can be encouraged interact with one another, their academics, and the information sources. A foreign language academic encourages discussion using newspaper headlines. The topicality of the headlines contain indirect impulses, which encourages a reader (a student) to develop and express his/her own opinion. Migration issues have become topical and up-to-date recently. Higher education also is a sphere of life, which is concerned with this topic. The topic is also in the focus of students and academics’ attention at Rezekne Academy of Technologies and is used successfully at foreign languages’ classes. The aim of the paper is to demonstrate methodological approaches how to develop students’ discussion skills on political issues through the acquisition of migration terminology using newspaper headlines and using of them in discussions on the migration issues.Communicative, discourse analysis content and critical analysis methods were used in the research. Vocabulary is crucial in learning and teaching for specific purposes. Three C’s (conveying meaning, checking, and consolidation) approach has been used in acquisition of new vocabulary at foreign language classes. Foreign languages for specific purposes concentrate more on language in context than on teaching grammar and language structures.

    This interdisciplinary, transhistorical collection brings together international scholars from English literature, Italian studies, performance history, and comparative literature to offer new perspectives on the vibrant engagements between Shakespeare and Italian theatre, literary culture, and politics, from the sixteenth to the twenty-first century. Chapters address the intricate, two-way exchange between Shakespeare and Italy: how the artistic and intellectual culture of Renaissance Italy shaped Shakespeare’s drama in his own time, and how the afterlife of Shakespeare’s work and reputation in Italy since the eighteenth century has permeated Italian drama, poetry, opera, novels, and film. Responding to exciting recent scholarship on Shakespeare and Italy, as well as transnational theatre, this volume moves beyond conventional source study and familiar questions about influence, location, and adaptation to propose instead a new, evolving paradigm of cultural interchange.     Error analysis in automatic speech recognition and machine translation

    Automatic speech recognition and machine translation are well-known terms in the translation world nowadays. Systems that carry out these processes are taking over the work of humans more and more. Reasons for this are the speed at which the tasks are performed and their costs. However, the quality of these systems is debatable. They are not yet capable of delivering the same performance as human transcribers or translators. The lack of creativity, the ability to interpret texts and the sense of language is often cited as the reason why the performance of machines is not yet at the level of human translation or transcribing work. Despite this, there are companies that use these machines in their production pipelines. Unbabel, an online translation platform powered by artificial intelligence, is one of these companies. Through a combination of human translators and machines, Unbabel tries to provide its customers with a translation of good quality. This internship report was written with the aim of gaining an overview of the performance of these systems and the errors they produce. Based on this work, we try to get a picture of possible error patterns produced by both systems. The present work consists of an extensive analysis of errors produced by automatic speech recognition and machine translation systems after automatically transcribing and translating 10 English videos into Dutch. Different videos were deliberately chosen to see if there were significant differences in the error patterns between videos. The generated data and results from this work, aims at providing possible ways to improve the quality of the services already mentioned.O reconhecimento automático de fala e a tradução automática são termos conhecidos no mundo da tradução, hoje em dia. Os sistemas que realizam esses processos estão a assumir cada vez mais o trabalho dos humanos. As razões para isso são a velocidade com que as tarefas são realizadas e os seus custos. No entanto, a qualidade desses sistemas é discutível. As máquinas ainda não são capazes de ter o mesmo desempenho dos transcritores ou tradutores humanos. A falta de criatividade, de capacidade de interpretar textos e de sensibilidade linguística são motivos frequentemente usados para justificar o facto de as máquinas ainda não estarem suficientemente desenvolvidas para terem um desempenho comparável com o trabalho de tradução ou transcrição humano. Mesmo assim, existem empresas que fazem uso dessas máquinas. A Unbabel, uma plataforma de tradução online baseada em inteligência artificial, é uma dessas empresas. Através de uma combinação de tradutores humanos e de máquinas, a Unbabel procura oferecer aos seus clientes traduções de boa qualidade. O presente relatório de estágio foi feito com o intuito de obter uma visão geral do desempenho desses sistemas e das falhas que cometem, propondo delinear uma imagem dos possíveis padrões de erro existentes nos mesmos. Para tal, fez-se uma análise extensa das falhas que os sistemas de reconhecimento automático de fala e de tradução automática cometeram, após a transcrição e a tradução automática de 10 vídeos. Foram deliberadamente escolhidos registos videográficos diversos, de modo a verificar possíveis diferenças nos padrões de erro. Através dos dados gerados e dos resultados obtidos, propõe-se encontrar uma forma de melhorar a qualidade dos serviços já mencionados

    Postmodifying prepositional phrases in English and Spanish (with special reference to locative modifiers)

    Las frases preposicionales constituyen el tipo más frecuente de posmodificación en todos los registros del inglés (Biber et a. 1999: 634). En el español, las expresiones locativas suelen incorporar un pronombre relativo y un verbo (the books [which are] on the table > los libros que están encima de la mesa), o bien expresarse mediante una frase introducida por la preposición de (los libros de encima de la mesa). Wonder (1979) sostiene que el español permite el uso de preposiciones que no sean de en las frases locativas en el caso de "situaciones ‘activas'" (el aterrizaje en pleno campo) frente a "situaciones estáticas" (*el sofá en la sala), y también si la frase puede tener una función adverbial antes que, o además de, una interpretación adjetiva (el ruido en la calle), sobre todo si dicha frase encierra la idea de una posición alternativa para un objeto, o bien un contraste con otro objeto similar (el sofá en la sala contigua). El presente estudio pretende examinar este argumento y, además, explorar la posmodificación preposicional en español de un modo más general, a la par que propone una explicación sobre la elección de estructura en español que se basa en el criterio de la densidad léxica

    Investigating the translation of metaphors used in diagnosis and treatment in Chinese medicine classics Neijing and Shanghan Lun

    The language used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) depicts a world of human physiology, pathology, diagnosis and treatment, in which metaphors serve as an essential vehicle for readers to understand fundamental but often abstract concepts in TCM. While previous work has investigated strategies for translating the TCM classics, the metaphors used to describe diagnosis and treatment and their English translations are critical in understanding TCM, and require a more systematic exploration. This study investigates the diagnosis- and treatment-related metaphors selected from two TCM classics, Neijing and Shanghan Lun, and their English renditions by translators from different professional backgrounds. The thesis also focuses on the analysis of the effectiveness of different translation strategies in delivering pertinent health-related information conveyed by the metaphors of the original texts. A multidimensional framework that combines a conceptual approach with linguistic and cultural elements was established to capture the complexity of the metaphors, particularly from the perspective of translation. The linguistic metaphors in this study were first identified from a purpose-built corpus using a CMT-based metaphor identification procedure adapted from Steen (2010). Following the conceptual metaphor inference procedure developed by Steen (2011), various conceptual metaphors were inferred from the linguistic metaphors. Corresponding English translations were also collected to investigate which translation strategies have been used and which strategy can most effectively deliver the health-related information conveyed by the metaphors. Four main strategies were employed in the English translations: 1) equivalent mapping, by which the source domain is retained; 2) using a simile to translate a metaphor; 3) direct narrative equivalence, which abandons the metaphor and narrates the medical knowledge directly; and 4) complemented equivalent translation, whereby the metaphor is explained with additional content. From the perspective of conveying health-related knowledge, equivalent mapping was effective for metaphors universally understood by Chinese and English readers. For culturally specific metaphors, especially when the metaphor relates to an important TCM concept, complemented equivalent translation, which can reconfigure the cognitive context for the reader, was most suitable. For metaphors not related to important concepts, direct narrative equivalence was found to be effective
