Mathematical practice, crowdsourcing, and social machines
The highest level of mathematics has traditionally been seen as a solitary
endeavour, to produce a proof for review and acceptance by research peers.
Mathematics is now at a remarkable inflexion point, with new technology
radically extending the power and limits of individuals. Crowdsourcing pulls
together diverse experts to solve problems; symbolic computation tackles huge
routine calculations; and computers check proofs too long and complicated for
humans to comprehend.
Mathematical practice is an emerging interdisciplinary field which draws on
philosophy and social science to understand how mathematics is produced. Online
mathematical activity provides a novel and rich source of data for empirical
investigation of mathematical practice - for example the community question
answering system {\it mathoverflow} contains around 40,000 mathematical
conversations, and {\it polymath} collaborations provide transcripts of the
process of discovering proofs. Our preliminary investigations have demonstrated
the importance of "soft" aspects such as analogy and creativity, alongside
deduction and proof, in the production of mathematics, and have given us new
ways to think about the roles of people and machines in creating new
mathematical knowledge. We discuss further investigation of these resources and
what it might reveal.
Crowdsourced mathematical activity is an example of a "social machine", a new
paradigm, identified by Berners-Lee, for viewing a combination of people and
computers as a single problem-solving entity, and the subject of major
international research endeavours. We outline a future research agenda for
mathematics social machines, a combination of people, computers, and
mathematical archives to create and apply mathematics, with the potential to
change the way people do mathematics, and to transform the reach, pace, and
impact of mathematics research.Comment: To appear, Springer LNCS, Proceedings of Conferences on Intelligent

BlogForever D2.6: Data Extraction Methodology
This report outlines an inquiry into the area of web data extraction, conducted within the context of blog preservation. The report reviews theoretical advances and practical developments for implementing data extraction. The inquiry is extended through an experiment that demonstrates the effectiveness and feasibility of implementing some of the suggested approaches. More specifically, the report discusses an approach based on unsupervised machine learning that employs the RSS feeds and HTML representations of blogs. It outlines the possibilities of extracting semantics available in blogs and demonstrates the benefits of exploiting available standards such as microformats and microdata. The report proceeds to propose a methodology for extracting and processing blog data to further inform the design and development of the BlogForever platform
The article highlights linguo-cognitive aspect of the English-language mathematical discourse that synergistically encompasses multilevel sign-logical functional structures and presents an integral system of scientifically rigorized natural language and symbolic sign symbols. Anthropocentrism, creativity, professional verification, isolation, disproportional development and non-cyclicality, determined by the non-synchronicity of cognive professional activity, dynamism, dialogism and didacticism as a sign of stylistic layering in accordance with the sphere and forms of communication, were analyzed as the principles of the English-language mathematical discourse architectonics.
The article highlights linguo-cognitive aspects of English mathematical discourse that synergistically encompasses multilevel sign-logical functional structures and presents an integral system of scientifically formalized natural language and symbolic signs. The actual study highlights the professional language not only as a system of strictly defined concepts of a certain practical area of application, but as a phenomenon for preserving knowledge, mental attributes, spiritual values, which permits the consideration of its uniqueness in a holistic scientific world, presenting both the process and the result of scientific production and ideas exchange. Among the linguistic and cognitive parameters of English mathematical discourse architectonics the following structuring principles were distinguished: universal character (the universal truth of knowledge), high level of formalization, professional verification, isolation (limited access to information determined by the level of professional competence of the addressee), pragmatism, dialogism, cognitive creative nature of the argumentation (synthesis of hypothetical preconditions, theoretical knowledge and creativity of reasoning leading to the production of new knowledge), professional value, disproportional development and non-cyclicality, determined by the non-synchronicity of gnostic professional activity, dynamism and didacticism as a sign of stylistic layering in correlation with the sphere and forms of communication.
Building ontologies in a collaborative and increasingly community-driven
fashion has become a central paradigm of modern ontology engineering. This
understanding of ontologies and ontology engineering processes is the result
of intensive theoretical and empirical research within the Semantic Web
community, supported by technology developments such as Web 2.0. Over 6 years
after the publication of the first methodology for collaborative ontology
engineering, it is generally acknowledged that, in order to be useful, but
also economically feasible, ontologies should be developed and maintained in a
community-driven manner, with the help of fully-fledged environments providing
dedicated support for collaboration and user participation. Wikis, and similar
communication and collaboration platforms enabling ontology stakeholders to
exchange ideas and discuss modeling decisions are probably the most important
technological components of such environments. In addition, process-driven
methodologies assist the ontology engineering team throughout the ontology
life cycle, and provide empirically grounded best practices and guidelines for
optimizing ontology development results in real-world projects. The goal of
this article is to analyze the state of the art in the field of collaborative
ontology engineering. We will survey several of the most outstanding
methodologies, methods and techniques that have emerged in the last years, and
present the most popular development environments, which can be utilized to
carry out, or facilitate specific activities within the methodologies. A
discussion of the open issues identified concludes the survey and provides a
roadmap for future research and development in this lively and promising
