Impact of Component Losses on the Efficiency of a New Quasi-Z-Source-Based Dual Active Bridge
Part 16: Optimization Techniques in EnergyInternational audienceThe paper analyzes the impact of the component losses on the efficiency of the novel DC/DC converter. The converter is a combination of the quazi-Z-source (qZS) network and dual active bridge (DAB). In the analysis the mathematical loss models of the proposed DC/DC converter are derived and efficiency is estimated. Eventually the efficiency is verified experimentally
Segment Wise Communication Delay Measurement for Managing Renewable Energy Sources in Smart Grid
In order to meet the communication delay requirements of various message types while developing applications for the Smart Grid (SG), selection of appropriate communication technology is crucial and requires network segment-wise delay characterization under different network conditions. Thus, this thesis presents a segment-wise communication delay measurement technique and experimental results for SG applications. In this technique, an Arduino based test bed is developed to characterize communication delays across multiple hops using different communication technologies such as Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and cellular communication. This test bed is customized for the measurement of the delay involved in several network segments between remotely deployed photovoltaic (PV) panels and monitoring locations. Extensive delay measurement tests are conducted with varying data packet sizes under various controlled background traffic conditions, including Internet traffic. The test results can be used to infer the suitability of various communication technologies under diverse network conditions

Solid state transformers topologies, controllers, and applications: State-of-the-art literature review
With the global trend to produce clean electrical energy, the penetration of renewable energy sources in existing electricity infrastructure is expected to increase significantly within the next few years. The solid state transformer (SST) is expected to play an essential role in future smart grid topologies. Unlike traditional magnetic transformer, SST is flexible enough to be of modular construction, enabling bi-directional power flow and can be employed for AC and DC grids. Moreover, SSTs can control the voltage level and modulate both active and reactive power at the point of common coupling without the need to external flexible AC transmission system device as per the current practice in conventional electricity grids. The rapid advancement in power semiconductors switching speed and power handling capacity will soon allow for the commercialisation of grid-rated SSTs. This paper is aimed at introducing a state-of-the-art review for SST proposed topologies, controllers, and applications. Additionally, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis along with a brief review of market drivers for prospective commercialisation are elaborated
Solid state transformer technologies and applications: a bibliographical survey
This paper presents a bibliographical survey of the work carried out to date on the solid state transformer (SST). The paper provides a list of references that cover most work related to this device and a short discussion about several aspects. The sections of the paper are respectively dedicated to summarize configurations and control strategies for each SST stage, the work carried out for optimizing the design of high-frequency transformers that could adequately work in the isolation stage of a SST, the efficiency of this device, the various modelling approaches and simulation tools used to analyze the performance of a SST (working a component of a microgrid, a distribution system or just in a standalone scenario), and the potential applications that this device is offering as a component of a power grid, a smart house, or a traction system.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
Broadband PLC for Clustered Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Architecture
Advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) subsystems monitor and control energy distribution through exchange of information between smart meters and utility networks. A key
challenge is how to select a cost-effective communication system without compromising the performance of the applications. Current communication technologies were developed for conventional data networks with different requirements. It is therefore necessary to investigate how
much of existing communication technologies can be retrofitted into the new energy infrastructure
to cost-effectively deliver acceptable level of service. This paper investigates broadband power line communications (BPLC) as a backhaul solution in AMI. By applying the disparate traffic characteristics of selected AMI applications, the network performance is evaluated. This study also examines the communication network response to changes in application configurations in terms of packet sizes. In each case, the network is stress-tested and performance is assessed against acceptable thresholds documented in the literature. Results show that, like every other communication technology, BPLC has certain limitations; however, with some modifications in the
network topology, it indeed can fulfill most AMI traffic requirements for flexible and time-bounded
applications. These opportunities, if tapped, can significantly improve fiscal and operational
efficiencies in AMI services. Simulation results also reveal that BPLC as a backhaul can support flat
and clustered AMI structures with cluster size ranging from 1 to 150 smart meters
