POLIS: a probabilistic summarisation logic for structured documents

PhDAs the availability of structured documents, formatted in markup languages such as SGML, RDF, or XML, increases, retrieval systems increasingly focus on the retrieval of document-elements, rather than entire documents. Additionally, abstraction layers in the form of formalised retrieval logics have allowed developers to include search facilities into numerous applications, without the need of having detailed knowledge of retrieval models. Although automatic document summarisation has been recognised as a useful tool for reducing the workload of information system users, very few such abstraction layers have been developed for the task of automatic document summarisation. This thesis describes the development of an abstraction logic for summarisation, called POLIS, which provides users (such as developers or knowledge engineers) with a high-level access to summarisation facilities. Furthermore, POLIS allows users to exploit the hierarchical information provided by structured documents. The development of POLIS is carried out in a step-by-step way. We start by defining a series of probabilistic summarisation models, which provide weights to document-elements at a user selected level. These summarisation models are those accessible through POLIS. The formal definition of POLIS is performed in three steps. We start by providing a syntax for POLIS, through which users/knowledge engineers interact with the logic. This is followed by a definition of the logics semantics. Finally, we provide details of an implementation of POLIS. The final chapters of this dissertation are concerned with the evaluation of POLIS, which is conducted in two stages. Firstly, we evaluate the performance of the summarisation models by applying POLIS to two test collections, the DUC AQUAINT corpus, and the INEX IEEE corpus. This is followed by application scenarios for POLIS, in which we discuss how POLIS can be used in specific IR tasks

Towards the automatic evaluation of stylistic quality of natural texts: constructing a special-purpose corpus of stylistic edits from the Wikipedia revision history

    Get PDF
This thesis proposes an approach to automatic evaluation of the stylistic quality of natural texts through data-driven methods of Natural Language Processing. Advantages of data driven methods and their dependency on the size of training data are discussed. Also the advantages of using Wikipedia as a source for textual data mining are presented. The method in this project crucially involves a program for quick automatic extraction of sentences edited by users from the Wikipedia Revision History. The resulting edits have been compiled in a large-scale corpus of examples of stylistic editing. The complete modular structure of the extraction program is described and its performance is analyzed. Furthermore, the need to separate stylistic edits stylistic edits from factual ones is discussed and a number of Machine Learning classification algorithms for this task are proposed and tested. The program developed in this project was able to process approximately 10% of the whole Russian Wikipedia Revision history (200 gigabytes of textual data) in one month, resulting in the extraction of more than two millions of user edits. The best algorithm for the classification of edits into factual and stylistic ones achieved 86.2% cross-validation accuracy, which is comparable with state-of-the-art performance of similar models described in published papers.Master i Datalingvistikk og språkteknologiMAHF-DASPDASP35

NEMA: Automatic Integration of Large Network Management Databases

    Get PDF
Network management, whether for malfunction analysis, failure prediction, performance monitoring and improvement, generally involves large amounts of data from different sources. To effectively integrate and manage these sources, automatically finding semantic matches among their schemas or ontologies is crucial. Existing approaches on database matching mainly fall into two categories. One focuses on the schema-level matching based on schema properties such as field names, data types, constraints and schema structures. Network management databases contain massive tables (e.g., network products, incidents, security alert and logs) from different departments and groups with nonuniform field names and schema characteristics. It is not reliable to match them by those schema properties. The other category is based on the instance-level matching using general string similarity techniques, which are not applicable for the matching of large network management databases. In this paper, we develop a matching technique for large NEtwork MAnagement databases (NEMA) deploying instance-level matching for effective data integration and connection. We design matching metrics and scores for both numerical and non-numerical fields and propose algorithms for matching these fields. The effectiveness and efficiency of NEMA are evaluated by conducting experiments based on ground truth field pairs in large network management databases. Our measurement on large databases with 1,458 fields, each of which contains over 10 million records, reveals that NEMA can achieve accuracy of 95%. We further compare with several other existing algorithms, and show that NEMA outperforms them by 7%-15% in numerical matching and achieves the best trade-off for non-numerical matching

TopX : efficient and versatile top-k query processing for text, structured, and semistructured data

TopX is a top-k retrieval engine for text and XML data. Unlike Boolean engines, it stops query processing as soon as it can safely determine the k top-ranked result objects according to a monotonous score aggregation function with respect to a multidimensional query. The main contributions of the thesis unfold into four main points, confirmed by previous publications at international conferences or workshops: • Top-k query processing with probabilistic guarantees. • Index-access optimized top-k query processing. • Dynamic and self-tuning, incremental query expansion for top-k query processing. • Efficient support for ranked XML retrieval and full-text search. Our experiments demonstrate the viability and improved efficiency of our approach compared to existing related work for a broad variety of retrieval scenarios.

30th International Conference on Information Modelling and Knowledge Bases

    Get PDF
Information modelling is becoming more and more important topic for researchers, designers, and users of information systems. The amount and complexity of information itself, the number of abstraction levels of information, and the size of databases and knowledge bases are continuously growing. Conceptual modelling is one of the sub-areas of information modelling. The aim of this conference is to bring together experts from different areas of computer science and other disciplines, who have a common interest in understanding and solving problems on information modelling and knowledge bases, as well as applying the results of research to practice. We also aim to recognize and study new areas on modelling and knowledge bases to which more attention should be paid. Therefore philosophy and logic, cognitive science, knowledge management, linguistics and management science are relevant areas, too. In the conference, there will be three categories of presentations, i.e. full papers, short papers and position papers
