MAA*: A Heuristic Search Algorithm for Solving Decentralized POMDPs
We present multi-agent A* (MAA*), the first complete and optimal heuristic
search algorithm for solving decentralized partially-observable Markov decision
problems (DEC-POMDPs) with finite horizon. The algorithm is suitable for
computing optimal plans for a cooperative group of agents that operate in a
stochastic environment such as multirobot coordination, network traffic
control, `or distributed resource allocation. Solving such problems efiectively
is a major challenge in the area of planning under uncertainty. Our solution is
based on a synthesis of classical heuristic search and decentralized control
theory. Experimental results show that MAA* has significant advantages. We
introduce an anytime variant of MAA* and conclude with a discussion of

Design and Development of a User Specific Dynamic E-Magazine
Internet and electronic media gaining more popularity due to ease and speed,
the count of Internet users has increased tremendously. The world is moving
faster each day with several events taking place at once and the Internet is
flooded with information in every field. There are categories of information
ranging from most relevant to user, to the information totally irrelevant or
less relevant to specific users. In such a scenario getting the information
which is most relevant to the user is indispensable to save time. The
motivation of our solution is based on the idea of optimizing the search for
information automatically. This information is delivered to user in the form of
an interactive GUI. The optimization of the contents or information served to
him is based on his social networking profiles and on his reading habits on the
proposed solution. The aim is to get the user's profile information based on
his social networking profile considering that almost every Internet user has
one. This helps us personalize the contents delivered to the user in order to
produce what is most relevant to him, in the form of a personalized e-magazine.
Further the proposed solution learns user's reading habits for example the news
he saves or clicks the most and makes a decision to provide him with the best

Hierarchical path-finding for Navigation Meshes (HNA*)
Path-finding can become an important bottleneck as both the size of the virtual environments and the number of agents navigating them increase. It is important to develop techniques that can be efficiently applied to any environment independently of its abstract representation. In this paper we present a hierarchical NavMesh representation to speed up path-finding. Hierarchical path-finding (HPA*) has been successfully applied to regular grids, but there is a need to extend the benefits of this method to polygonal navigation meshes. As opposed to regular grids, navigation meshes offer representations with higher accuracy regarding the underlying geometry, while containing a smaller number of cells. Therefore, we present a bottom-up method to create a hierarchical representation based on a multilevel k-way partitioning algorithm (MLkP), annotated with sub-paths that can be accessed online by our Hierarchical NavMesh Path-finding algorithm (HNA*). The algorithm benefits from searching in graphs with a much smaller number of cells, thus performing up to 7.7 times faster than traditional AÂż over the initial NavMesh. IPEA: the digital archive use case
Now is the time to migrate tape-based media archives to digital file-based archives for television broadcasters. These archives not only address the issue of tape-deterioration, they also create new possibilities for opening up the archive. However, the switch from tape-based to file-based is something only the very big television broadcasters can manage individually. Outer- broadcasters should work together to accomplish this task. In the Flemish part of Belgium, the two largest broadcasters in Flanders, namely the commercial broadcaster VMMa and the public broadcaster VRT, the television facilities supporting company Videohouse, and different university research groups associated with the Interdisciplinary Institute for Broadband Technology joined forces and started the "Innovative Platform on Electronic Archiving" project. The goal of this project is to develop common standards for the exchange and archiving of audio-visual data. Pervasive and standalone computing: The perceptual effects of variable multimedia quality.
The introduction of multimedia on pervasive and mobile communication devices raises a number of perceptual quality issues, however, limited work has been done examining the 3-way interaction between use of equipment, quality of perception and quality of service. Our work measures levels of informational transfer (objective) and user satisfaction (subjective)when users are presented with multimedia video clips at three different frame rates, using four different display devices, simulating variation in participant mobility. Our results will show that variation in frame-rate does not impact a userâs level of information assimilation, however, does impact a usersâ perception of multimedia video âqualityâ. Additionally, increased visual immersion can be used to increase transfer of video information, but can negatively affect the usersâ perception of âqualityâ. Finally, we illustrate the significant affect of clip-content on the transfer of video, audio and textual information, placing into doubt the use of purely objective quality definitions when considering multimedia
