Technological Challenges of Teaching Mathematics in a Blended Learning Environment
This paper describes the following technological aspects of blended learning of mathematics: effective preparation of electronic teaching materials suited for different students' needs, videotaping of mathematics lectures, automated (self)testing of subjects taught using the computer algebra system Maple and preparation of interactive teaching materials with the MapleNet technology. Authors describe results achieved during preparation and implementation of these challenges in a Calculus course taught at the Faculty of Science, Masaryk University in Brno, in Autumn 2006.ÄŚlánek je vÄ›nován technologickĂ˝m aspektĹŻm vĂ˝uky matematiky s vyuĹľitĂm vĂ˝poÄŤetnĂ techniky a komunikaÄŤnĂch technologiĂ (blended learning): efektivnĂ pĹ™Ăprava elektronickĂ˝ch vĂ˝ukovĂ˝ch materiálĹŻ, nahrávánĂ pĹ™ednášek, pĹ™Ăprava a realizace autotestovánĂ s vyuĹľitĂm technologie MapleNet.This paper describes the following technological aspects of blended learning of mathematics: effective preparation of electronic teaching materials suited for different students' needs, videotaping of mathematics lectures, automated (self)testing of subjects taught using the computer algebra system Maple and preparation of interactive teaching materials with the MapleNet technology. It is also used by the staff for teaching electronic publishing and literate programming, for writing scientific papers, quizzes and teaching resources, and for generating documents and web pages from university databases by the university information system. TeX and related technologies have been systematically supported and deployed at the Faculty of Informatics of MU (FI MU) for more than two decades. In this paper, we describe the TeX-related support and projects that we have realized at various levels. These include the design of the Faculty's visual identity, resources for teaching electronic publishing, and for database publishing directly from the University's information system. We evaluate the outcomes, and consider some possible future deployments of TeX-related technologies. With the data analytics of fithesis3 class support and its use at MU, we give arguments why the answer to the often-asked question in the title is in the affirmative, at least for computer science schools like ours and for authoring math publications

Optimal level sets for bivariate density representation
In bivariate density representation there is an extensive literature on level set estimation when the level is fixed, but this is not so much the case when choosing which level is (or which levels are) of most interest. This is an important practical question which depends on the kind of problem one has to deal with as well as the kind of feature one wishes to highlight in the density, the answer to which requires both the definition of what the optimal level is and the construction of a method for finding it. We consider two scenarios for this problem. The first one corresponds to situations in which one has just a single density function to be represented. However, as a result of the technical progress in data collecting, problems are emerging in which one has to deal with a sample of densities. In these situations, the need arises to develop joint representation for all these densities, and this is the second scenario considered in this paper. For each case, we provide consistency results for the estimated levels and present wide Monte Carlo simulated experiments illustrating the interest and feasibility of the proposed method. Navigating the PDF/A standard: a case study of theses in the University of Oxford’s institutional repository
The PDF/A (Portable Document Format–Archival) was established by the International Organization of Standardization as the ISO 19005 standard for long-term preservation of electronic documents. While the ISO requirements of a well-formed PDF/A ensure sustainability and easy recovery of content, the standard restricts some document features from being incorporated into a well-formed PDF/A. Non-conformances to the standard are found across electronic theses and dissertations, from non-Latin glyphs used in scientific and language papers to embedded content, such as images. A further complication for achieving ISO 19005 compliance is that, despite non-conformance to the ISO standard, validation tools do not always catch non-conformance errors in documents which claim to conform to PDF/A. While PDF/A is a logical solution for long-term preservation of electronic documents, the stringent standard prevents some content which is frequently used in academic research from conforming to the ISO 19005 standard. This thesis evaluates the PDF/A and its potential use as a preservation file format for electronic theses and dissertations
Animations in pdfTEX-generated PDF A New Method for Directly Embedding Animation into PDF
Abstract. This paper presents a new approach for creating animations in Portable Document Format (PDF). The method of animation authoring described uses free software (pdfTEX) only. The animations are viewable by any viewer that supports at least some features of Acrobat JavaScript, particularly Adobe (Acrobat) Reader, which is available at no cost for a wide variety of platforms. Furthermore, the capabilities of PDF make it possible to have a single file with animations both for interactive viewing and printing. The paper explains the principles of PDF, Acrobat JavaScript and pdfTEX needed to create animations for Adobe Reader using no other software except pdfTEX. We present a step by step explanation of animation preparation, together with sample code, using a literate programming style. Finally, we discuss other possibilities of embedding animations into documents using open standards (SVG) and free tools, and conclude with their strengths and weaknesses with respect to the method presented
