    Energy Efficiency in Hybrid Mobile and Wireless Networks

    Wireless Internet access is almost pervasive nowadays, and many types of wireless networks can be used to access the Internet. However, along with this growth, there is an even greater concern about the energy consumption and efficiency of mobile devices as well as of the supporting networks, triggering the appearance of the concept of green communication. While some efforts have been made towards this direction, challenges still exist and need to be tackled from diverse perspectives. Cellular networks, WLANs, and ad hoc networks in the form of wireless mesh networks are the most popular technologies for wireless Internet access. The availability of such a variety of access networks has also paved the way to explore synergistic approaches for Internet access, leading to the concept of hybrid networks and relay communications. In addition, many mobile devices are being equipped with multiple interfaces, enabling them to operate in hybrid networks. In contrast, the improvements in the battery technology itself have not matched the pace of the emerging mobile applications. The situation becomes more sophisticated when a mobile device functions also as a relay node to forward other station’s data. In the literature, energy efficiency of mobile devices has been addressed from various perspectives such as protocol-level efforts, battery management efforts, etc. However, there is little work on energy efficiency in hybrid mobile and wireless networks and devices with heterogeneous connections. For example, when there are multiple networks available to a mobile device, how to achieve optimum long-term energy consumption of such a device is an open question. Furthermore, in today’s cellular networks, micro-, pico-, and femto-cells are the most popular network topologies in order to support high data rate services and high user density. With the growth of such small-cell solutions, the energy consumption of these networks is also becoming an important concern for operators. Towards this direction, various solutions have been proposed, ranging from deployment strategies for base stations to cooperative techniques etc. However, as base stations have the largest share in a network’s energy consumption, methods that allow lightly-loaded base stations sleep or be switched off are possible means as a feasible step towards green communications. In this dissertation, we tackle the above mentioned problems from two perspectives, i.e., mobile station’s and operator’s perspectives. More specifically, by taking into account the amount of transferred data in uplinks and downlinks individually for various components in a hybrid network, strategies are proposed to reduce mobile station’s battery energy consumption. For this purpose, other parameters such as link distance and remaining battery energy can also be considered for handover decision making, in order to maximize energy efficiency of the mobile station. To optimize long-term energy consumption of the mobile stations operated in such scenarios, a Markov decision process-based methodology is proposed as our contribution to this topic. Moreover, from operator’s perspective, a network energy conservation scheme which may switch off a base station is proposed for micro- or pico-cells scenarios. Both deterministic and probabilistic schemes are proposed for network energy conservation. The problems considered and the solutions proposed in this dissertation advance the frontiers of the research work within the theme of energy efficiency for mobile devices as well as hybrid mobile and wireless networks

    Performance analysis of the interference adaptation dynamic channel allocation technique in wireless communication networks

    Dynamic channel allocation (DCA) problem is one of the major research topics in the wireless networking area. The purpose of this technique is to relieve the contradiction between the increasing traffic load in wireless networks and the limited bandwidth resource across the air interface. The challenge of this problem comes from the following facts: a) even the basic DCA problem is shown to be NP-complete (none polynomial complete); b) the size of the state space of the problem is very large; and c) any practical DCA algorithm should run in real-time. Many heuristic DCA schemes have been proposed in the literature. It has been shown through simulation results that the interference adaptive dynamic channel allocation (IA-DCA) scheme is a promising strategy in Time Devision [sic] Multiple Accesss/Frequency Devision [sic] Multiple Accesss [sic] (TDMA/FDMA) based wireless communication systems. However, the analytical work on the IA-DCA strategy in the literature is nearly blank. The performance of a, DCA algorithm in TDMA/FDMA wireless systems is influenced by three factors: representation of the interference, traffic fluctuation, and the processing power of the algorithm. The major obstacle in analyzing IA-DCA is the computation of co-channel interference without the constraint of conventional channel reuse factors. To overcome this difficulty, one needs a representation pattern which can approximate the real interference distribution as accurately as desired, and is also computationally viable. For this purpose, a concept called channel reuse zone (CRZ) is introduced and the methodology of computing the area of a CRZ with an arbitrary, non-trivial channel reuse factor is defined. Based on this new concept, the computation of both downlink and uplink CO-channel interference is investigated with two different propagation models, namely a simplified deterministic model and a shadowing model. For the factor of the processing power, we proposed an idealized Interference Adaptation Maximum Packing (IAMP) scheme, which gives the upper bound of all IA-DCA schemes in terms of the system capacity. The effect of traffic dynamics is delt [sic] with in two steps. First, an asymptotic performance bound for the IA-DCA strategy is derived with the assumption of an arbitrarily large number of channels in the system. Then the performance bound for real wireless systems with the IA-DCA strategy is derived by alleviating this assumption. Our analytical result is compared with the performance bound drawn by Zander and Eriksson for reuse-partitioning DCA1 and some simulation results for IA-DCA in the literature. It turns out that the performance bound obtained in this work is much tighter than Zander and Eriksson\u27s bound and is in agreement with simulation results. 1only available for deterministic propagation model and downlink connection

    Intelligent on-demand radio resource provisioning for green ultra-small cell networks

    This thesis studies intelligent on-demand radio resource provisioning involving sleep mode operation in ultra Small Cell Networks (SCNs). Sleep modes are low power states of base stations. The purpose of the research is to investigate how appropriate traffic information can be adopted in sleep mode operation schemes for SCNs with different architectures. A novel protocol-friendly sleep mode operation algorithm based on Adaptive Traffic Perception is proposed for distributed SCN architectures. It is proved robust to different SCN layouts with the reduction in the average power consumption of base stations being more than 35% while maintaining the Quality of Service. The Traffic-aware Cell Management scheme adopting Direction of Arrival information is particularly designed to eliminate the necessity of computation for sleeping base stations. This scheme is shown to significantly reduce the side effects associated with the sleep mode operation, including system overheads and the increasing user transmission power. For SCNs using centralised architectures, such as Cloud Radio Access Networks, Hotspot-oriented Green Frameworks are proposed for different information availabilities, which achieve almost 80% reduction in power consumption of Remote Radio Heads at low traffic levels. A clustering technique is utilised for the optimisation of the placement of active Remote Radio Heads, lowering the average user transmission power. The amount of reduction depends on the completeness of the information and can exceed 70% compared with the state-of-the-art. A type II Matern Hard-core Point Process is used for modelling SCNs. The derivation and approximation of its distance distributions are also proposed. The distance distributions are used for the probabilistic theoretical analysis of some metrics of the sleep mode operation

    Distributed Algorithms for Location Based Services

    Real-time localization services are some of the most challenging and interesting mobile broadband applications in the Location Based Services (LBS) world. They are gaining more and more importance for a broad range of applications, such as road/highway monitoring, emergency management, social networking, and advertising. This Ph.D. thesis focuses on the problem of defining a new category of decentralized peer-to-peer (P2P) algorithms for LBS. We aim at defining a P2P overlay where each participant can efficiently retrieve node and resource information (data or services) located near any chosen geographic position. The idea is that the responsibility and the required resources for maintaining information about position of active users are properly distributed among nodes, for which a change in the set of participants causes only a minimal amount of disruption without reducing the quality of provided services. In this thesis we will assess the validity of the proposed model through a formal analysis of the routing protocol and a detailed simulative investigation of the designed overlay. We will depict a complete picture of involved parameters, how they affect the performance and how they can be configured to adapt the protocol to the requirements of several location based applications. Furthermore we will present two application scenarios (a smartphone based Traffic Information System and a large information management system for a SmartCity) where the designed protocol has been simulated and evaluated, as well as the first prototype of a real implementation of the overlay using both traditional PC nodes and Android mobile devices

    Interference management in wireless cellular networks

    In wireless networks, there is an ever-increasing demand for higher system throughputs, along with growing expectation for all users to be available to multimedia and Internet services. This is especially difficult to maintain at the cell-edge. Therefore, a key challenge for future orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA)-based networks is inter-cell interference coordination (ICIC). With full frequency reuse, small inter-site distances (ISDs), and heterogeneous architectures, coping with co-channel interference (CCI) in such networks has become paramount. Further, the needs for more energy efficient, or “green,” technologies is growing. In this light, Uplink Interference Protection (ULIP), a technique to combat CCI via power reduction, is investigated. By reducing the transmit power on a subset of resource blocks (RBs), the uplink interference to neighbouring cells can be controlled. Utilisation of existing reference signals limits additional signalling. Furthermore, cell-edge performance can be significantly improved through a priority class scheduler, enhancing the throughput fairness of the system. Finally, analytic derivations reveal ULIP guarantees enhanced energy efficiency for all mobile stations (MSs), with the added benefit that overall system throughput gains are also achievable. Following this, a novel scheduler that enhances both network spectral and energy efficiency is proposed. In order to facilitate the application of Pareto optimal power control (POPC) in cellular networks, a simple feasibility condition based on path gains and signal-to-noise-plus- interference ratio (SINR) targets is derived. Power Control Scheduling (PCS) maximises the number of concurrently transmitting MSs and minimises their transmit powers. In addition, cell/link removal is extended to OFDMA operation. Subsequently, an SINR variation technique, Power SINR Scheduling (PSS), is employed in femto-cell networks where full bandwidth users prohibit orthogonal resource allocation. Extensive simulation results show substantial gains in system throughput and energy efficiency over conventional power control schemes. Finally, the evolution of future systems to heterogeneous networks (HetNets), and the consequently enhanced network management difficulties necessitate the need for a distributed and autonomous ICIC approach. Using a fuzzy logic system, locally available information is utilised to allocate time-frequency resources and transmit powers such that requested rates are satisfied. An empirical investigation indicates close-to-optimal system performance at significantly reduced complexity (and signalling). Additionally, base station (BS) reference signals are appropriated to provide autonomous cell association amongst multiple co-located BSs. Detailed analytical signal modelling of the femto-cell and macro/pico-cell layouts reveal high correlation to experimentally gathered statistics. Further, superior performance to benchmarks in terms of system throughput, energy efficiency, availability and fairness indicate enormous potential for future wireless networks
