    DJ-MC: A Reinforcement-Learning Agent for Music Playlist Recommendation

    In recent years, there has been growing focus on the study of automated recommender systems. Music recommendation systems serve as a prominent domain for such works, both from an academic and a commercial perspective. A fundamental aspect of music perception is that music is experienced in temporal context and in sequence. In this work we present DJ-MC, a novel reinforcement-learning framework for music recommendation that does not recommend songs individually but rather song sequences, or playlists, based on a model of preferences for both songs and song transitions. The model is learned online and is uniquely adapted for each listener. To reduce exploration time, DJ-MC exploits user feedback to initialize a model, which it subsequently updates by reinforcement. We evaluate our framework with human participants using both real song and playlist data.     Current Challenges and Visions in Music Recommender Systems Research

    Music recommender systems (MRS) have experienced a boom in recent years, thanks to the emergence and success of online streaming services, which nowadays make available almost all music in the world at the user's fingertip. While today's MRS considerably help users to find interesting music in these huge catalogs, MRS research is still facing substantial challenges. In particular when it comes to build, incorporate, and evaluate recommendation strategies that integrate information beyond simple user--item interactions or content-based descriptors, but dig deep into the very essence of listener needs, preferences, and intentions, MRS research becomes a big endeavor and related publications quite sparse. The purpose of this trends and survey article is twofold. We first identify and shed light on what we believe are the most pressing challenges MRS research is facing, from both academic and industry perspectives. We review the state of the art towards solving these challenges and discuss its limitations. Second, we detail possible future directions and visions we contemplate for the further evolution of the field. The article should therefore serve two purposes: giving the interested reader an overview of current challenges in MRS research and providing guidance for young researchers by identifying interesting, yet under-researched, directions in the field

    Encouraging attention and exploration in a hybrid recommender system for libraries of unfamiliar music

    There are few studies of user interaction with music libraries comprising solely of unfamiliar music, despite such music being represented in national music information centre collections. We aim to develop a system that encourages exploration of such a library. This study investigates the influence of 69 users’ pre-existing musical genre and feature preferences on their ongoing continuous real-time psychological affect responses during listening and the acoustic features of the music on their liking and familiarity ratings for unfamiliar art music (the collection of the Australian Music Centre) during a sequential hybrid recommender-guided interaction. We successfully mitigated the unfavorable starting conditions (no prior item ratings or participants’ item choices) by using each participant’s pre-listening music preferences, translated into acoustic features and linked to item view count from the Australian Music Centre database, to choose their seed item. We found that first item liking/familiarity ratings were on average higher than the subsequent 15 items and comparable with the maximal values at the end of listeners’ sequential responses, showing acoustic features to be useful predictors of responses. We required users to give a continuous response indication of their perception of the affect expressed as they listened to 30-second excerpts of music, with our system successfully providing either a “similar” or “dissimilar” next item, according to—and confirming—the utility of the items’ acoustic features, but chosen from the affective responses of the preceding item. We also developed predictive statistical time series analysis models of liking and familiarity, using music preferences and preceding ratings. Our analyses suggest our users were at the starting low end of the commonly observed inverted-U relationship between exposure and both liking and perceived familiarity, which were closely related. Overall, our hybrid recommender worked well under extreme conditions, with 53 unique items from 100 chosen as “seed” items, suggesting future enhancement of our approach can productively encourage exploration of libraries of unfamiliar music

    Today, a consistent part of our everyday interaction with art and aesthetic artefacts occurs through digital media, and our preferences and choices are systematically tracked and analyzed by algorithms in ways that are far from transparent. Our consumption is constantly documented, and then, we are fed back through tailored information. We are therefore witnessing the emergence of a complex interrelation between our aesthetic choices, their digital elaboration, and also the production of content and the dynamics of creative processes. All are involved in a process of mutual influences, and are partially determined by the invisible guiding hand of algorithms. With regard to this topic, this paper will introduce some key issues concerning the role of algorithms in aesthetic domains, such as taste detection and formation, cultural consumption and production, and showing how aesthetics can contribute to the ongoing debate about the impact of today’s “algorithmic culture”

    Music is a complicated form of communication, where creators and culture communicate and expose their individuality. After music digitalization took place, recommendation systems and other online services have become indispensable in the field of Music Information Retrieval (MIR). To build these systems and recommend the right choice of song to the user, classification of songs is required. In this paper, we propose an approach for finding similarity between music based on mid-level attributes like pitch, midi value corresponding to pitch, interval, contour and duration and applying text based classification techniques. Our system predicts jazz, metal and ragtime for western music. The experiment to predict the genre of music is conducted based on 450 music files and maximum accuracy achieved is 95.8% across different n-grams. We have also analyzed the Indian classical Carnatic music and are classifying them based on its raga. Our system predicts Sankarabharam, Mohanam and Sindhubhairavi ragas. The experiment to predict the raga of the song is conducted based on 95 music files and the maximum accuracy achieved is 90.3% across different n-grams.     Sequential decision making in artificial musical intelligence

    Over the past 60 years, artificial intelligence has grown from a largely academic field of research to a ubiquitous array of tools and approaches used in everyday technology. Despite its many recent successes and growing prevalence, certain meaningful facets of computational intelligence have not been as thoroughly explored. Such additional facets cover a wide array of complex mental tasks which humans carry out easily, yet are difficult for computers to mimic. A prime example of a domain in which human intelligence thrives, but machine understanding is still fairly limited, is music. Over the last decade, many researchers have applied computational tools to carry out tasks such as genre identification, music summarization, music database querying, and melodic segmentation. While these are all useful algorithmic solutions, we are still a long way from constructing complete music agents, able to mimic (at least partially) the complexity with which humans approach music. One key aspect which hasn't been sufficiently studied is that of sequential decision making in musical intelligence. This thesis strives to answer the following question: Can a sequential decision making perspective guide us in the creation of better music agents, and social agents in general? And if so, how? More specifically, this thesis focuses on two aspects of musical intelligence: music recommendation and human-agent (and more generally agent-agent) interaction in the context of music. The key contributions of this thesis are the design of better music playlist recommendation algorithms; the design of algorithms for tracking user preferences over time; new approaches for modeling people's behavior in situations that involve music; and the design of agents capable of meaningful interaction with humans and other agents in a setting where music plays a roll (either directly or indirectly). Though motivated primarily by music-related tasks, and focusing largely on people's musical preferences, this thesis also establishes that insights from music-specific case studies can also be applicable in other concrete social domains, such as different types of content recommendation. Showing the generality of insights from musical data in other contexts serves as evidence for the utility of music domains as testbeds for the development of general artificial intelligence techniques.     Automatic Music Playlist Generation via Simulation-based Reinforcement Learning

    Personalization of playlists is a common feature in music streaming services, but conventional techniques, such as collaborative filtering, rely on explicit assumptions regarding content quality to learn how to make recommendations. Such assumptions often result in misalignment between offline model objectives and online user satisfaction metrics. In this paper, we present a reinforcement learning framework that solves for such limitations by directly optimizing for user satisfaction metrics via the use of a simulated playlist-generation environment. Using this simulator we develop and train a modified Deep Q-Network, the action head DQN (AH-DQN), in a manner that addresses the challenges imposed by the large state and action space of our RL formulation. The resulting policy is capable of making recommendations from large and dynamic sets of candidate items with the expectation of maximizing consumption metrics. We analyze and evaluate agents offline via simulations that use environment models trained on both public and proprietary streaming datasets. We show how these agents lead to better user-satisfaction metrics compared to baseline methods during online A/B tests. Finally, we demonstrate that performance assessments produced from our simulator are strongly correlated with observed online metric results.Comment: 10 pages. KDD 2

    Thaat Classification Using Recurrent Neural Networks with Long Short-Term Memory and Support Vector Machine

    This research paper introduces a groundbreaking method for music classification, emphasizing thaats rather than the conventional raga-centric approach. A comprehensive range of audio features, including amplitude envelope, RMSE, STFT, spectral centroid, MFCC, spectral bandwidth, and zero-crossing rate, is meticulously used to capture thaats' distinct characteristics in Indian classical music. Importantly, the study predicts emotional responses linked with the identified thaats. The dataset encompasses a diverse collection of musical compositions, each representing unique thaats. Three classifier models - RNN-LSTM, SVM, and HMM - undergo thorough training and testing to evaluate their classification performance. Initial findings showcase promising accuracies, with the RNN-LSTM model achieving 85% and SVM performing at 78%. These results highlight the effectiveness of this innovative approach in accurately categorizing music based on thaats and predicting associated emotional responses, providing a fresh perspective on music analysis in Indian classical music
