Development Of A Supersonic Wind Tunnel Rapid Real-Time Data Acquisition And Control System

    Get PDF
As a part of the revitalization of the supersonic wind tunnel maintained by the Aerospace Engineering Department of Mississippi State University, a new data acquisition and control system became incumbent. Previous data acquisition and control systems used in the operation of the supersonic wind tunnel made use of now outdated hardware and functioned with two central processing units; one processor was used for recording system response, while the other monitored and controlled the tunnel. A new system is required to provide adequate rapid real-time control, along with rapid acquisition of raw tunnel feedback or response data and tunnel pressure data all implemented on one computer processor. The data acquisition and control program that was developed provides synchronized data storage and control output commands, while providing the operator with all essential information and checklists required for running the tunnel. The program is a general user interface developed from previously implemented data acquisition and control systems to perform all predetermined tasks while minimizing operator front panel inputs. When the supersonic wind tunnel repair is completed, the compiled data acquisition and control program will be implemented in the operation of the tunnel. This paper details the development of the supersonic wind tunnel data acquisition and control system employed in the revitalization project. Without the information on the details of the data acquisition and control program, any future editing of the control system source codes will be a laborious task

Optical Access Engine Setup and Validation

The optical access engine integrated with the diagnostic and optical measurement techniques is a great platform for engine research because it provides clear visual access to the combustion chamber inside the engines. An optical access engine customized based on a 4-cylinder spark ignited direct injection (SIDI) production engine is located in the Advanced Power Systems Laboratories (APS LABS) at Michigan Technological University. This optical access engine inside the test cell has been set up for different engine research. In this report, two SAE papers in engine research utilizing the optical access engine are reviewed to gain basic understanding of the methodology. Though the optical engine in APS LABS is a little bit different from the engines used in the literature, the methodology in the papers provides guidelines for engine research through optical access engines. In addition, the optical access engine instrumentation including the test cell setup and the optical engine setup is described in detail in the report providing a solid record for later troubleshooting and reference. Finally, the motoring tests, firing tests and optical imaging experiment on the optical engine have been performed to validate the instrumentation. This report only describes so far the instrumentation of the optical engine in the APS LABS by April 2015

ASDTIC control and standardized interface circuits applied to buck, parallel and buck-boost dc to dc power converters

    Get PDF
Versatile standardized pulse modulation nondissipatively regulated control signal processing circuits were applied to three most commonly used dc to dc power converter configurations: (1) the series switching buck-regulator, (2) the pulse modulated parallel inverter, and (3) the buck-boost converter. The unique control concept and the commonality of control functions for all switching regulators have resulted in improved static and dynamic performance and control circuit standardization. New power-circuit technology was also applied to enhance reliability and to achieve optimum weight and efficiency

Who controls children’s education data? A socio-legal analysis of the UK governance regimes for schools and EdTech

    Get PDF
A socio-legal analysis of the UK governance regime for data collected from children at school for teaching and learning contrasts the government-mandated data collection by schools to inform educational policy and planning with data processed and shared with third parties by commercial EdTech providers. We find the former is effectively governed by the government’s ‘Five Safes Framework’ with some problematic exceptions. By contrast, EdTech providers process a growing volume of personal data under the DPA 2018/UK GDPR with a looser enforcement regime. While schools have few mechanisms and insufficient expertise or resources to hold EdTech providers accountable for processing children’s data, EdTech providers have considerable latitude in interpreting the law. Consequently, and paradoxically, regulations governing (mostly) deidentified data used for public purposes are more systematically enforced than those governing personal (identifiable) data used for public and commercial purposes. We conclude with recommendations so that education data can serve children’s best interests

Interface Development for Digitization of Documents Using OCR

    Get PDF
The purpose of this thesis is to develop a semi-automated interface that uses Optical Character Recognition (OCR) routines to identify text-based information from a large volume of digitized drawings associated with the oil and gas industry. The identified information is presented in an appropriate interface for any necessary manual modifica- tion, with the target of improving the efficiency of maintaining large amounts of older documents. The thesis outlines the design of the interface and the implementation of Tesseract OCR engine, in combination with tailor-made functions and classes that lever- age OpenCV to enhance the recognition process. The purpose of this thesis is to develop a semi-automated interface that uses Optical Character Recognition (OCR) routines to identify text-based information from a large volume of digitized drawings associated with the oil and gas industry.
