Hybrid ToF and RSSI real-time semantic tracking with an adaptive industrial internet of things architecture
Real-time asset tracking in indoor mass production manufacturing environments can reduce losses associated with pausing a production line to locate an asset. Complemented by monitored contextual information, e.g. machine power usage, it can provide smart information, such as which components have been machined by a worn or damaged tool. Although sensor based Internet of Things (IoT) positioning has been developed, there are still key challenges when benchmarked approaches concentrate on precision, using computationally expensive filtering and iterative statistical or heuristic algorithms, as a trade-off for timeliness and scalability. Precise but high-cost hardware systems and invasive infrastructures of wired devices also pose implementation issues in the Industrial IoT (IIoT). Wireless, selfpowered
sensors are integrated in this paper, using a novel, communication-economical RSSI/ToF ranging method in a proposed semantic IIoT architecture. Annotated data collection ensures accessibility, scalable knowledge discovery
and flexibility to changes in consumer and business requirements. Deployed at a working indoor industrial facility the system demonstrated comparable RMS ranging accuracy (ToF 6m and RSSI 5.1m with 40m range) to existing systems tested in non-industrial environments and a 12.6-13.8m mean positioning accuracy
Not All Wireless Sensor Networks Are Created Equal: A Comparative Study On Tunnels
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are envisioned for a number of application scenarios. Nevertheless, the few in-the-field experiences typically focus on the features of a specific system, and rarely report about the characteristics of the target environment, especially w.r.t. the behavior and performance of low-power wireless communication. The TRITon project, funded by our local administration, aims to improve safety and reduce maintenance costs of road tunnels, using a WSN-based control infrastructure. The access to real tunnels within TRITon gives us the opportunity to experimentally assess the peculiarities of this environment, hitherto not investigated in the WSN field. We report about three deployments: i) an operational road tunnel, enabling us to assess the impact of vehicular traffic; ii) a non-operational tunnel, providing insights into analogous scenarios (e.g., underground mines) without vehicles; iii) a vineyard, serving as a baseline representative of the existing literature. Our setup, replicated in each deployment, uses mainstream WSN hardware, and popular MAC and routing protocols. We analyze and compare the deployments w.r.t. reliability, stability, and asymmetry of links, the accuracy of link quality estimators, and the impact of these aspects on MAC and routing layers. Our analysis shows that a number of criteria commonly used in the design of WSN protocols do not hold in tunnels. Therefore, our results are useful for designing networking solutions operating efficiently in similar environments
Collaborative Indoor Positioning Systems: A Systematic Review
Research and development in Collaborative Indoor Positioning Systems (CIPSs) is growing
steadily due to their potential to improve on the performance of their non-collaborative counterparts.
In contrast to the outdoors scenario, where Global Navigation Satellite System is widely adopted, in
(collaborative) indoor positioning systems a large variety of technologies, techniques, and methods is
being used. Moreover, the diversity of evaluation procedures and scenarios hinders a direct comparison. This paper presents a systematic review that gives a general view of the current CIPSs. A total of
84 works, published between 2006 and 2020, have been identified. These articles were analyzed and
classified according to the described system’s architecture, infrastructure, technologies, techniques,
methods, and evaluation. The results indicate a growing interest in collaborative positioning, and
the trend tend to be towards the use of distributed architectures and infrastructure-less systems.
Moreover, the most used technologies to determine the collaborative positioning between users are
wireless communication technologies (Wi-Fi, Ultra-WideBand, and Bluetooth). The predominant collaborative positioning techniques are Received Signal Strength Indication, Fingerprinting, and Time
of Arrival/Flight, and the collaborative methods are particle filters, Belief Propagation, Extended
Kalman Filter, and Least Squares. Simulations are used as the main evaluation procedure. On the
basis of the analysis and results, several promising future research avenues and gaps in research
were identified
Multi-mode Tracking of a Group of Mobile Agents
We consider the problem of tracking a group of mobile nodes with limited
available computational and energy resources given noisy RSSI measurements and
position estimates from group members. The multilateration solutions are known
for energy efficiency. However, these solutions are not directly applicable to
dynamic grouping scenarios where neighbourhoods and resource availability may
frequently change. Existing algorithms such as cluster-based GPS duty-cycling,
individual-based tracking, and multilateration-based tracking can only
partially deal with the challenges of dynamic grouping scenarios. To cope with
these challenges in an effective manner, we propose a new group-based
multi-mode tracking algorithm. The proposed algorithm takes the topological
structure of the group as well as the availability of the resources into
consideration and decides the best solution at any particular time instance. We
consider a clustering approach where a cluster head coordinates the usage of
resources among the cluster members. We evaluate the energy-accuracy trade-off
of the proposed algorithm for various fixed sampling intervals. The evaluation
is based on the 2D position tracks of 40 nodes generated using Reynolds'
flocking model. For a given energy budget, the proposed algorithm reduces the
mean tracking error by up to in comparison to the existing
energy-efficient cooperative algorithms. Moreover, the proposed algorithm is as

Design and theoretical analysis of advanced power based positioning in RF system
Accurate locating and tracking of people and resources has become a fundamental requirement for many applications. The global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) is widely used. But its accuracy suffers from signal obstruction by buildings, multipath fading, and disruption due to jamming and spoof. Hence, it is required to supplement GPS with inertial sensors and indoor localization schemes that make use of WiFi APs or beacon nodes. In the GPS-challenging or fault scenario, radio-frequency (RF) infrastructure based localization schemes can be a fallback solution for robust navigation. For the indoor/outdoor transition scenario, we propose hypothesis test based fusion method to integrate multi-modal localization sensors. In the first paper, a ubiquitous tracking using motion and location sensor (UTMLS) is proposed. As a fallback approach, power-based schemes are cost-effective when compared with the existing ToA or AoA schemes. However, traditional power-based positioning methods suffer from low accuracy and are vulnerable to environmental fading. Also, the expected accuracy of power-based localization is not well understood but is needed to derive the hypothesis test for the fusion scheme. Hence, in paper 2-5, we focus on developing more accurate power-based localization schemes. The second paper improves the power-based range estimation accuracy by estimating the LoS component. The ranging error model in fading channel is derived. The third paper introduces the LoS-based positioning method with corresponding theoretical limits and error models. In the fourth and fifth paper, a novel antenna radiation-pattern-aware power-based positioning (ARPAP) system and power contour circle fitting (PCCF) algorithm are proposed to address antenna directivity effect on power-based localization. Recent Advances in Indoor Localization Systems and Technologies
Despite the enormous technical progress seen in the past few years, the maturity of indoor localization technologies has not yet reached the level of GNSS solutions. The 23 selected papers in this book present the recent advances and new developments in indoor localization systems and technologies, propose novel or improved methods with increased performance, provide insight into various aspects of quality control, and also introduce some unorthodox positioning methods
RSSI-Based Self-Localization with Perturbed Anchor Positions
We consider the problem of self-localization by a resource-constrained mobile
node given perturbed anchor position information and distance estimates from
the anchor nodes. We consider normally-distributed noise in anchor position
information. The distance estimates are based on the log-normal shadowing
path-loss model for the RSSI measurements. The available solutions to this
problem are based on complex and iterative optimization techniques such as
semidefinite programming or second-order cone programming, which are not
suitable for resource-constrained environments. In this paper, we propose a
closed-form weighted least-squares solution. We calculate the weights by taking
into account the statistical properties of the perturbations in both RSSI and
anchor position information. We also estimate the bias of the proposed solution
and subtract it from the proposed solution. We evaluate the performance of the
proposed algorithm considering a set of arbitrary network topologies in
comparison to an existing algorithm that is based on a similar approach but
only accounts for perturbations in the RSSI measurements. We also compare the
results with the corresponding Cramer-Rao lower bound. Our experimental
evaluation shows that the proposed algorithm can substantially improve the
