    Clock Generation Design for Continuous-Time Sigma-Delta Analog-To-Digital Converter in Communication Systems

    Software defined radio, a highly digitized wireless receiver, has drawn huge attention in modern communication system because it can not only benefit from the advanced technologies but also exploit large digital calibration of digital signal processing (DSP) to optimize the performance of receivers. Continuous-time (CT) bandpass sigma-delta (ΣΔ) modulator, used as an RF-to-digital converter, has been regarded as a potential solution for software defined ratio. The demand to support multiple standards motivates the development of a broadband CT bandpass ΣΔ which can cover the most commercial spectrum of 1GHz to 4GHz in a modern communication system. Clock generation, a major building block in radio frequency (RF) integrated circuits (ICs), usually uses a phase-locked loop (PLL) to provide the required clock frequency to modulate/demodulate the informative signals. This work explores the design of clock generation in RF ICs. First, a 2-16 GHz frequency synthesizer is proposed to provide the sampling clocks for a programmable continuous-time bandpass sigma-delta (ΣΔ) modulator in a software radio receiver system. In the frequency synthesizer, a single-sideband mixer combines feed-forward and regenerative mixing techniques to achieve the wide frequency range. Furthermore, to optimize the excess loop delay in the wideband system, a phase-tunable clock distribution network and a clock-controlled quantizer are proposed. Also, the false locking of regenerative mixing is solved by controlling the self-oscillation frequency of the CML divider. The proposed frequency synthesizer performs excellent jitter performance and efficient power consumption. Phase noise and quadrature phase accuracy are the common tradeoff in a quadrature voltage-controlled oscillator. A larger coupling ratio is preferred to obtain good phase accuracy but suffer phase noise performance. To address these fundamental trade-offs, a phasor-based analysis is used to explain bi-modal oscillation and compute the quadrature phase errors given by inevitable mismatches of components. Also, the ISF is used to estimate the noise contribution of each major noise source. A CSD QVCO is first proposed to eliminate the undesired bi-modal oscillation and enhance the quadrature phase accuracy. The second work presents a DCC QVCO. The sophisticated dynamic current-clipping coupling network reduces injecting noise into LC tank at most vulnerable timings (zero crossing points). Hence, it allows the use of strong coupling ratio to minimize the quadrature phase sensitivity to mismatches without degrading the phase noise performance. The proposed DCC QVCO is implemented in a 130-nm CMOS technology. The measured phase noise is -121 dBc/Hz at 1MHz offset from a 5GHz carrier. The QVCO consumes 4.2mW with a 1-V power supply, resulting in an outstanding Figure of Merit (FoM) of 189 dBc/Hz. Frequency divider is one of the most power hungry building blocks in a PLL-based frequency synthesizer. The complementary injection-locked frequency divider is proposed to be a low-power solution. With the complimentary injection schemes, the dividers can realize both even and odd division modulus, performing a more than 100% locking range to overcome the PVT variation. The proposed dividers feature excellent phase noise. They can be used for multiple-phase generation, programmable phase-switching frequency dividers, and phase-skewing circuits

    Analysis of the high frequency substrate noise effects on LC-VCOs

    La integració de transceptors per comunicacions de radiofreqüència en CMOS pot quedar seriosament limitada per la interacció entre els seus blocs, arribant a desaconsellar la utilització de un únic dau de silici. El soroll d’alta freqüència generat per certs blocs, com l’amplificador de potencia, pot viatjar pel substrat i amenaçar el correcte funcionament de l’oscil·lador local. Trobem tres raons importants que mostren aquest risc d’interacció entre blocs i que justifiquen la necessitat d’un estudi profund per minimitzar-lo. Les característiques del substrat fan que el soroll d’alta freqüència es propagui m’és fàcilment que el de baixa freqüència. Per altra banda, les estructures de protecció perden eficiència a mesura que la freqüència augmenta. Finalment, el soroll d’alta freqüència que arriba a l’oscil·lador degrada al seu correcte comportament. El propòsit d’aquesta tesis és analitzar en profunditat la interacció entre el soroll d’alta freqüència que es propaga pel substrat i l’oscil·lador amb l’objectiu de poder predir, mitjançant un model, l’efecte que aquest soroll pot tenir sobre el correcte funcionament de l’oscil·lador. Es volen proporcionar diverses guies i normes a seguir que permeti als dissenyadors augmentar la robustesa dels oscil·ladors al soroll d’alta freqüència que viatja pel substrat. La investigació de l’efecte del soroll de substrat en oscil·ladors s’ha iniciat des d’un punt de vista empíric, per una banda, analitzant la propagació de senyals a través del substrat i avaluant l’eficiència d’estructures per bloquejar aquesta propagació, i per altra, determinant l’efecte d’un to present en el substrat en un oscil·lador. Aquesta investigació ha mostrat que la injecció d’un to d’alta freqüència en el substrat es pot propagar fins arribar a l’oscil·lador i que, a causa del ’pulling’ de freqüència, pot modular en freqüència la sortida de l’oscil·lador. A partir dels resultats de l’anàlisi empíric s’ha aportat un model matemàtic que permet predir l’efecte del soroll en l’oscil·lador. Aquest model té el principal avantatge en el fet de que està basat en paràmetres físics de l’oscil·lador o del soroll, permetent determinar les mesures que un dissenyador pot prendre per augmentar la robustesa de l’oscil·lador així com les conseqüències que aquestes mesures tenen sobre el seu funcionament global (trade-offs). El model ha estat comparat tant amb simulacions com amb mesures reals demostrant ser molt precís a l’hora de predir l’efecte del soroll de substrat. La utilitat del model com a eina de disseny s’ha demostrat en dos estudis. Primerament, les conclusions del model han estat aplicades en el procés de disseny d’un oscil·lador d’ultra baix consum a 2.5GHz, aconseguint un oscil·lador robust al soroll de substrat d’alta freqüència i amb característiques totalment compatibles amb els principals estàndards de comunicació en aquesta banda. Finalment, el model s’ha utilitzat com a eina d’anàlisi per avaluar la causa de les diferències, en termes de robustesa a soroll de substrat, mesurades en dos oscil·ladors a 60GHz amb dues diferents estratègies d’apantallament de l’inductor del tanc de ressonant, flotant en un cas i connectat a terra en l’altre. El model ha mostrat que les diferències en robustesa són causades per la millora en el factor de qualitat i en l’amplitud d’oscil·lació i no per un augment en l’aïllament entre tanc i substrat. Per altra banda, el model ha demostrat ser vàlid i molt precís inclús en aquest rang de freqüència tan extrem.The integration of transceivers for RF communication in CMOS can be seriously limited by the interaction between their blocks, even advising against using a single silicon die. The high frequency noise generated by some of the blocks, like the power amplifier, can travel through the substrate, reaching the local oscillator and threatening its correct performance. Three important reasons can be stated that show the risk of the single die integration. Noise propagation is easier the higher the frequency. Moreover, the protection structures lose efficiency as the noise frequency increases. Finally, the high frequency noise that reaches the local oscillator degrades its performance. The purpose of this thesis is to deeply analyze the interaction between the high frequency substrate noise and the oscillator with the objective of being able to predict, thanks to a model, the effect that this noise may have over the correct behavior of the oscillator. We want to provide some guidelines to the designers to allow them to increase the robustness of the oscillator to high frequency substrate noise. The investigation of the effect of the high frequency substrate noise on oscillators has started from an empirical point of view, on one hand, analyzing the noise propagation through the substrate and evaluating the efficiency of some structures to block this propagation, and on the other hand, determining the effect on an oscillator of a high frequency noise tone present in the substrate. This investigation has shown that the injection of a high frequency tone in the substrate can reach the oscillator and, due to a frequency pulling effect, it can modulate in frequency the output of the oscillator. Based on the results obtained during the empirical analysis, a mathematical model to predict the effect of the substrate noise on the oscillator has been provided. The main advantage of this model is the fact that it is based on physical parameters of the oscillator and of the noise, allowing to determine the measures that a designer can take to increase the robustness of the oscillator as well as the consequences (trade-offs) that these measures have over its global performance. This model has been compared against both, simulations and real measurements, showing a very high accuracy to predict the effect of the high frequency substrate noise. The usefulness of the presented model as a design tool has been demonstrated in two case studies. Firstly, the conclusions obtained from the model have been applied in the design of an ultra low power consumption 2.5 GHz oscillator robust to the high frequency substrate noise with characteristics which make it compatible with the main communication standards in this frequency band. Finally, the model has been used as an analysis tool to evaluate the cause of the differences, in terms of performance degradation due to substrate noise, measured in two 60 GHz oscillators with two different tank inductor shielding strategies, floating and grounded. The model has determined that the robustness differences are caused by the improvement in the tank quality factor and in the oscillation amplitude and no by an increased isolation between the tank and the substrate. The model has shown to be valid and very accurate even in these extreme frequency range.Postprint (published version

    Techniques for low jitter clock multiplication

D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2008.Includes bibliographical references (p. 115-121).Phase realigning clock multipliers, such as Multiplying Delay-Locked Loops (MDLL), offer significantly reduced random jitter compared to typical Phase-Locked Loops (PLL). This is achieved by introducing the reference signal directly into their voltage controlled oscillators (VCO) to realign the phase to the clean reference. However, the typical cost of this benefit is a significant increase in deterministic jitter due to path mismatch in the detector as well as analog nonidealities in the tuning circuits. This thesis proposes a mostly-digital tuning technique that drastically reduces deterministic jitter in phase realigning clock multipliers. The proposed technique eliminates path mismatch by using a single-path digital detection method that leverages a scrambling time-to-digital converter (TDC) and correlated double sampling to infer the tuning error from the difference in cycle periods of the output. By using a digital loop filter that consists of a digital accumulator, the tuning technique avoids the analog nonidealities of typical tuning paths. The scrambling TDC is not a contribution of this thesis. A highly-digital MDLL prototype that uses the proposed tuning technique consists of two custom 0.13 [mu]m ICs, an FPGA board, a discrete digital-to-analog converter (DAC) with effective 8 bits, and a simple RC filter. The measured performance (for a 1.6 GHz output and 50 MHz reference) demonstrated an overall jitter of 0.93 ps rms, and estimated random and deterministic jitter of 0.68 ps rms and 0.76 ps peak-to-peak, respectively. The proposed MDLL architecture is especially suitable for digital ICs, since its highly-digital architecture is mostly compatible with digital design flows, which eases its porting between technologies.by Belal Moheedin Helal.Ph.D

As sub-rate, multi-standard architectures are becoming predominant, the conventional clocking methodology seems to necessitate innovation in terms of low-cost implementation. Frequency synthesis with active, inductor-less oscillators replacing LC counterparts are reviewed, and solutions for two major drawbacks are proposed. Each solution is verified by prototype chip design, giving a possibility that the inductor-less oscillator may become a proper candidate for future high-speed serial links. To mitigate the high flicker noise of a high-frequency ring oscillator (RO), a reference multiplication technique that effectively extends the bandwidth of the following all-digital phase-locked loop (ADPLL) is proposed. The technique avoids any jitter accumulation, generating a clean mid-frequency clock, overall achieving high jitter performance in conjunction with the ADPLL. Timing constraint for the proper reference multiplication is first analyzed to determine the calibration points that may correct the existent phase errors. The weight for each calibration point is updated by the proposed a priori probability-based least-mean-square (LMS) algorithm. To minimize the time required for the calibration, each gain for the weight update is adaptively varied by deducing a posteriori which error source dominates the others. The prototype chip is fabricated in a 40-nm CMOS technology, and its measurement results verify the low-jitter, high-frequency clock generation with fast calibration settling. The presented work achieves an rms jitter of 177/223 fs at 8/16-GHz output, consuming 12.1/17-mW power. As the second embodiment, an RO-based ADPLL with an analog technique that addresses the high supply sensitivity of the RO is presented. Unlike prior arts, the circuit for the proposed technique does not extort the RO voltage headroom, allowing high-frequency oscillation. Further, the performance given from the technique is robust over process, voltage, and temperature (PVT) variations, avoiding the use of additional calibration hardware. Lastly, a comprehensive analysis of phase noise contribution is conducted for the overall ADPLL, followed by circuit optimizations, to retain the low-jitter output. Implemented in a 40-nm CMOS technology, the frequency synthesizer achieves an rms jitter of 289 fs at 8 GHz output without any injected supply noise. Under a 20-mVrms white supply noise, the ADPLL suppresses supply-noise-induced jitter by -23.8 dB.본 논문은 현대 시리얼 링크의 클락킹에 관여되는 주요한 문제들에 대하여 기술한다. 준속도, 다중 표준 구조들이 채택되고 있는 추세에 따라, 기존의 클라킹 방법은 낮은 비용의 구현의 관점에서 새로운 혁신을 필요로 한다.     학위논문 (박사)-- 서울대학교 대학원 : 전기·컴퓨터공학부, 2016. 8. 정덕균.In this thesis, novel circuit techniques for low-power and area-efficient wireline transceiver, including a phase-locked loop (PLL) based on a two-stage ring oscillator, a scalable voltage-mode transmitter, and a forwarded-clock (FC) receiver based on a delay-locked-loop (DLL) based per-pin deskew, are proposed. At first, a two-stage ring PLL that provides a four-phase, high-speed clock for a quarter-rate TX in order to minimize power consumption is presented. Several analyses and verification techniques, ranging from the clocking architectures for a high-speed TX to oscillation failures in a two-stage ring oscillator, are addressed in this thesis. A tri-state-inverter–based frequency-divider and an AC-coupled clock-buffer are used for high-speed operations with minimal power and area overheads. The proposed PLL fabricated in the 65-nm CMOS technology occupies an active area of 0.009 mm2 with an integrated-RMS-jitter of 414 fs from 10 kHz to 100 MHz while consuming 7.6 mW from a 1.2-V supply at 10 GHz. The resulting figure-of-merit is -238.8 dB, which surpasses that of the state-of-the-art ring-PLLs by 4 dB. Secondly, a voltage-mode (VM) transmitter which offers a wide operation range of 6 to 32 Gb/s, controllable pre-emphasis equalization and output voltage swing without altering output impedance, and a power supply scalability is presented. A quarter-rate clocking architecture is employed in order to maximize the scalability and energy efficiency across the variety of operating conditions. A P-over-N VM driver is used for CMOS compatibility and wide voltage-swing range required for various I/O standards. Two supply regulators calibrate the output impedance of the VM driver across the wide swing and pre-emphasis range. A single phase-locked loop is used to provide a wide frequency range of 1.5-to-8 GHz. The prototype chip is fabricated in 65-nm CMOS technology and occupies active area of 0.48x0.36 mm2. The proposed transmitter achieves 250-to-600-mV single-ended swing and exhibits the energy efficiency of 2.10-to-2.93 pJ/bit across the data rate of 6-to-32 Gb/s. And last, this thesis describes a power and area-efficient FC receiver and includes an analysis of the jitter tolerance of the FC receiver. In the proposed design, jitter tolerance is maximized according to the analysis by employing a DLL-based de-skewing. A sample-swapping bang-bang phase-detector (SS-BBPD) eliminates the stuck locking caused by the finite delay range of the voltage-controlled delay line (VCDL), and also reduces the required delay range of the VCDL by half. The proposed FC receiver is fabricated in 65-nm CMOS technology and occupies an active area of 0.025 mm2. At a data rate of 12.5 Gb/s, the proposed FC receiver exhibits an energy efficiency of 0.36 pJ/bit, and tolerates 1.4-UIpp sinusoidal jitter of 300 MHz.Chapter 1. Introduction 1 1.1.     Circuit Design Techniques For Wideband Phased Arrays

Two different solutions, one in frequency and one in time, have been proposed to minimize beam squinting in phased arrays. Additionally, a differential current reuse frequency doubler for area and power savings has been proposed. Silicon measurement results are provided for the frequency domain solution (IBM 65nm RF CMOS), injection locked oscillator model verification (IBM 130nm RF-CMOS) and frequency doubler (IBM 65nm RF CMOS), while post extraction simulation results are provided for the time domain phased array solution (the chip is currently under fabrication, TSMC 65nm RF CMOS). In the frequency domain solution, a 4-point passive analog FFT based frequency tunable filter is used to channelize an incoming wideband signal into multiple narrowband signals, which are then processed through independent phase shifters. A two channel prototype has been developed at 8GHz RF frequency. Three discrete phase shifts (0 & +/- 90 degrees) are implemented through differential I-Q swapping with appropriate polarity. A minimum null-depth of 19dB while a maximum null-depth of 27dB is measured. In the time domain solution, a discrete time approach is undertaken with signals getting sampled in order of their arrival times. A two-channel prototype for a 2GHz instantaneous RF bandwidth (7GHz-9GHz) has been designed. A QVCO generates quadrature LO signals at 8GHz which are phase shifted through a 5-bit (2 extra bits from differential I-Q swapping with appropriate polarity) cartesian combiner. Baseband sampling clocks are generated from phase shifted LOs through a CMOS divide by 4 with independent resets. The design achieves an average time delay of 4.53ps with 31.5mW of power consumption (per channel, buffers excluded). An injection locked oscillator has been analyzed in s-domain using Paciorek's time domain transient equations. The simplified analysis leads to a phase noise model identical to that of a type-I PLL. The model is equally applicable to injection locked dividers and multipliers and has been extended to cover all injection locking scenarios. The model has been verified against a discrete 57MHz Colpitt's ILO, a 6.5GHz ILFD and a 24GHz ILFM with excellent matching between the model and measurements. Additionally, a differential current reuse frequency doubler, for frequency outputs between 7GHz to 14GHz, design has been developed to reduce passive area and dc power dissipation. A 3-bit capacitive tuning along with a tail current source is used to better conversion efficiency. The doubler shows FOMT_{T} values between 191dBc/Hz to 209dBc/Hz when driven by a 0.7GHz to 5.8GHz wide tuning VCO with a phase noise that ranges from -114dBc/Hz to -112dBc/Hz over the same bandwidth

    Design of Fully-Integrated High-Resolution Radars in CMOS and BiCMOS Technologies

    The RADAR, acronym that stands for RAdio Detection And ranging, is a device that uses electromagnetic waves to detect the presence and the distance of an illuminated target. The idea of such a system was presented in the early 1900s to determine the presence of ships. Later on, with the approach of World War II, the radar gained the interest of the army who decided to use it for defense purposes, in order to detect the presence, the distance and the speed of ships, planes and even tanks. Nowadays, the use of similar systems is extended outside the military area. Common applications span from weather surveillance to Earth composition mapping and from flight control to vehicle speed monitoring. Moreover, the introduction of new ultrawideband (UWB) technologies makes it possible to perform radar imaging which can be successfully used in the automotive or medical field. The existence of a plenty of known applications is the reason behind the choice of the topic of this thesis, which is the design of fully-integrated high-resolution radars. The first part of this work gives a brief introduction on high resolution radars and describes its working principle in a mathematical way. Then it gives a comparison between the existing radar types and motivates the choice of an integrated solution instead of a discrete one. The second part concerns the analysis and design of two CMOS high-resolution radar prototypes tailored for the early detection of the breast cancer. This part begins with an explanation of the motivations behind this project. Then it gives a thorough system analysis which indicates the best radar architecture in presence of impairments and dictates all the electrical system specifications. Afterwards, it describes in depth each block of the transceivers with particular emphasis on the local oscillator (LO) generation system which is the most critical block of the designs. Finally, the last section of this part presents the measurement results. In particular, it shows that the designed radar operates over 3 octaves from 2 to 16GHz, has a conversion gain of 36dB, a flicker-noise-corner of 30Hz and a dynamic range of 107dB. These characteristics turn into a resolution of 3mm inside the body, more than enough to detect even the smallest tumor. The third and last part of this thesis focuses on the analysis and design of some important building blocks for phased-array radars, including phase shifter (PHS), true time delay (TTD) and power combiner. This part begins with an exhaustive introduction on phased array systems followed by a detailed description of each proposed lumped-element block. The main features of each block is the very low insertion loss, the wideband characteristic and the low area consumption. Finally, the major effects of circuit parasitics are described followed by simulation and measurement results
