    A theoretical look at ELECTRE TRI-nB and related sorting models

    ELECTRE TRI is a set of methods designed to sort alternatives evaluated on several attributes into ordered categories. The original ELECTRE TRI-B method uses one limiting profile per category. A more recent method, ELECTRE TRI-nB, allows one to use several limiting profiles for each category. We investigate the properties of ELECTRE TRI-nB. When the number of limiting profiles used to define each category is not restricted, ELECTRE TRI-nB is easy to characterize axiomatically and is found to be equivalent to several other methods proposed in the literature.     Preference incorporation in MOEA/D using an outranking approach with imprecise model parameters

    Multi-objective Optimization Evolutionary Algorithms (MOEAs) face numerous challenges when they are used to solve Many-objective Optimization Problems (MaOPs). Decomposition-based strategies, such as MOEA/D, divide an MaOP into multiple single-optimization sub-problems, achieving better diversity and a better approximation of the Pareto front, and dealing with some of the challenges of MaOPs. However, these approaches still require one to solve a multi-criteria selection problem that will allow a Decision-Maker (DM) to choose the final solution. Incorporating preferences may provide results that are closer to the region of interest of a DM. Most of the proposals to integrate preferences in decomposition-based MOEAs prefer progressive articulation over the “a priori” incorporation of preferences. Progressive articulation methods can hardly work without comparable and transitive preferences, and they can significantly increase the cognitive effort required of a DM. On the other hand, the “a priori” strategies do not demand transitive judgements from the DM but require a direct parameter elicitation that usually is subject to imprecision. Outranking approaches have properties that allow them to suitably handle non-transitive preferences, veto conditions, and incomparability, which are typical characteristics of many real DMs. This paper explores how to incorporate DM preferences into MOEA/D using the “a priori” incorporation of preferences, based on interval outranking relations, to handle imprecision when preference parameters are elicited. Several experiments make it possible to analyze the proposal's performance on benchmark problems and to compare the results with the classic MOEA/D without preference incorporation and with a recent, state-of-the-art preference-based decomposition algorithm. In many instances, our results are closer to the Region of Interest, particularly when the number of objectives increases

    Multiple Criteria Decision Analysis: Classification Problems and Solutions

    Multiple criteria decision analysis (MCDA) techniques are developed to address challenging classification problems arising in engineering management and elsewhere. MCDA consists of a set of principles and tools to assist a decision maker (DM) to solve a decision problem with a finite set of alternatives compared according to two or more criteria, which are usually conflicting. The three types of classification problems to which original research contributions are made are Screening: Reduce a large set of alternatives to a smaller set that most likely contains the best choice. Sorting: Arrange the alternatives into a few groups in preference order, so that the DM can manage them more effectively. Nominal classification: Assign alternatives to nominal groups structured by the DM, so that the number of groups, and the characteristics of each group, seem appropriate to the DM. Research on screening is divided into two parts: the design of a sequential screening procedure that is then applied to water resource planning in the Region of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada; and the development of a case-based distance method for screening that is then demonstrated using a numerical example. Sorting problems are studied extensively under three headings. Case-based distance sorting is carried out with Model I, which is optimized for use with cardinal criteria only, and Model II, which is designed for both cardinal and ordinal criteria; both sorting approaches are applied to a case study in Canadian municipal water usage analysis. Sorting in inventory management is studied using a case-based distance method designed for multiple criteria ABC analysis, and then applied to a case study involving hospital inventory management. Finally sorting is applied to bilateral negotiation using a case-based distance model to assist negotiators that is then demonstrated on a negotiation regarding the supply of bicycle components. A new kind of decision analysis problem, called multiple criteria nominal classification (MCNC), is addressed. Traditional classification methods in MCDA focus on sorting alternatives into groups ordered by preference. MCNC is the classification of alternatives into nominal groups, structured by the DM, who specifies multiple characteristics for each group. The features, definitions and structures of MCNC are presented, emphasizing criterion and alternative flexibility. An analysis procedure is proposed to solve MCNC problems systematically and applied to a water resources planning problem

    This fifth volume on Advances and Applications of DSmT for Information Fusion collects theoretical and applied contributions of researchers working in different fields of applications and in mathematics, and is available in open-access. The collected contributions of this volume have either been published or presented after disseminating the fourth volume in 2015 in international conferences, seminars, workshops and journals, or they are new. The contributions of each part of this volume are chronologically ordered. First Part of this book presents some theoretical advances on DSmT, dealing mainly with modified Proportional Conflict Redistribution Rules (PCR) of combination with degree of intersection, coarsening techniques, interval calculus for PCR thanks to set inversion via interval analysis (SIVIA), rough set classifiers, canonical decomposition of dichotomous belief functions, fast PCR fusion, fast inter-criteria analysis with PCR, and improved PCR5 and PCR6 rules preserving the (quasi-)neutrality of (quasi-)vacuous belief assignment in the fusion of sources of evidence with their Matlab codes.     Evaluation of optimal solutions in multicriteria models for intelligent decision support

    La memoria se enmarca dentro de la optimización y su uso para la toma de decisiones. La secuencia lógica ha sido la modelación, implementación, resolución y validación que conducen a una decisión. Para esto, hemos utilizado herramientas del análisis multicrerio, optimización multiobjetivo y técnicas de inteligencia artificial. El trabajo se ha estructurado en dos partes (divididas en tres capítulos cada una) que se corresponden con la parte teórica y con la parte experimental. En la primera parte se analiza el contexto del campo de estudio con un análisis del marco histórico y posteriormente se dedica un capítulo a la optimización multicriterio en el se recogen modelos conocidos, junto con aportaciones originales de este trabajo. En el tercer capítulo, dedicado a la inteligencia artificial, se presentan los fundamentos del aprendizaje estadístico , las técnicas de aprendizaje automático y de aprendizaje profundo necesarias para las aportaciones en la segunda parte. La segunda parte contiene siete casos reales a los que se han aplicado las técnicas descritas. En el primer capítulo se estudian dos casos: el rendimiento académico de los estudiantes de la Universidad Industrial de Santander (Colombia) y un sistema objetivo para la asignación del premio MVP en la NBA. En el siguiente capítulo se utilizan técnicas de inteligencia artificial a la similitud musical (detección de plagios en Youtube), la predicción del precio de cierre de una empresa en el mercado bursátil de Nueva York y la clasificación automática de señales espaciales acústicas en entornos envolventes. En el último capítulo a la potencia de la inteligencia artificial se le incorporan técnicas de análisis multicriterio para detectar el fracaso escolar universitario de manera precoz (en la Universidad Industrial de Santander) y, para establecer un ranking de modelos de inteligencia artificial de se recurre a métodos multicriterio. Para acabar la memoria, a pesar de que cada capítulo contiene una conclusión parcial, en el capítulo 8 se recogen las principales conclusiones de toda la memoria y una bibliografía bastante exhaustiva de los temas tratados. Además, el trabajo concluye con tres apéndices que contienen los programas y herramientas, que a pesar de ser útiles para la comprensión de la memoria, se ha preferido poner por separado para que los capítulos resulten más fluidos
