    Anomalous Chiral Plasmas in the Hydrodynamic Regime

    abstract: Chiral symmetry and its anomalous and spontaneous breaking play an important role in particle physics, where it explains the origin of pion and hadron mass hierarchy among other things. Despite its microscopic origin chirality may also lead to observable effects in macroscopic physical systems -- relativistic plasmas made of chiral (spin-12\frac{1}{2}) particles. Such plasmas are called \textit{chiral}. The effects include non-dissipative currents in external fields that could be present even in quasi-equilibrium, such as the chiral magnetic (CME) and separation (CSE) effects, as well as a number of inherently chiral collective modes called the chiral magnetic (CMW) and vortical (CVW) waves. Applications of chiral plasmas are truly interdisciplinary, ranging from hot plasma filling the early Universe, to dense matter in neutron stars, to electronic band structures in Dirac and Weyl semimetals, to quark-gluon plasma produced in heavy-ion collisions. The main focus of this dissertation is a search for traces of chiral physics in the spectrum of collective modes in chiral plasmas. I start from relativistic chiral kinetic theory and derive first- and second-order chiral hydrodynamics. Then I establish key features of an equilibrium state that describes many physical chiral systems and use it to find the full spectrum of collective modes in high-temperature and high-density cases. Finally, I consider in detail the fate of the two inherently chiral waves, namely the CMW and the CVW, and determine their detection prospects. The main results of this dissertation are the formulation of a fully covariant dissipative chiral hydrodynamics and the calculation of the spectrum of collective modes in chiral plasmas. It is found that the dissipative effects and dynamical electromagnetism play an important role in most cases. In particular, it is found that both the CMW and the CVW are heavily damped by the usual Ohmic dissipation in charged plasmas and the diffusion effects in neutral plasmas. These findings prompt a search for new physical observables in heavy-ion collisions, as well as a revision of potential applications of chiral theories in cosmology and solid-state physics.Dissertation/ThesisDoctoral Dissertation Physics 201

    thesisThis thesis analyzes the Palestinian national movement between 1917 and 1939. It focuses on the social structure and economic problems in Palestinian Arab society and how these factors contributed to the political challenges that confronted the national leadership. The Palestinian Arab leaders of this era are remembered today for their unwillingness to accept the terms of the British Mandate. Their position stayed more or less consistent throughout the period under review, as did their opposition to Jewish land purchase and immigration to the region. These were the two major tenets of the Zionist movement and critical objectives of the mandate itself. The continued opposition of the Palestinian leaders and the persistence of the issues they faced did not amount to a static situation. There were various social and economic changes taking place in Palestine. These changes adversely affected the lower classes and weakened the position of the ruling class. As the plight of the Palestinians worsened, the national leaders remained caught in political gridlock that further eroded their position. In addition to these factors, there were outside forces that determined the trajectory of the Palestine mandate and the state of its Arab population

    Nobody should have a monopoly of the truth in this universe. The censorship and suppression of challenging ideas against the tide of mainstream research, the blacklisting of scientists, for instance, is neither the best way to do and filter science, nor to promote progress in the human knowledge. The removal of good and novel ideas from the scientific stage is very detrimental to the pursuit of the truth. There are instances in which a mere unqualified belief can occasionally be converted into a generally accepted scientific theory through the screening action of refereed literature and meetings planned by the scientific organizing committees and through the distribution of funds controlled by "club opinions". It leads to unitary paradigms and unitary thinking not necessarily associated to the unique truth. This is the topic of this book: to critically analyze the problems of the official (and sometimes illicit) mechanisms under which current science (physics and astronomy in particular) is being administered and filtered today, along with the onerous consequences these mechanisms have on all of us.\ud \ud The authors, all of them professional researchers, reveal a pessimistic view of the miseries of the actual system, while a glimmer of hope remains in the "leitmotiv" claim towards the freedom in doing research and attaining an acceptable level of ethics in science

    Strategic development process and complex adaptive systems

    The two areas of theory upon which this research was based were „strategy development process?(SDP) and „complex adaptive systems? (CAS), as part of complexity theory, focused on human social organisations. The literature reviewed showed that there is a paucity of empirical work and theory in the overlap of the two areas, providing an opportunity for contributions to knowledge in each area of theory, and for practitioners. An inductive approach was adopted for this research, in an effort to discover new insights to the focus area of study. It was undertaken from within an interpretivist paradigm, and based on a novel conceptual framework. The organisationally intimate nature of the research topic, and the researcher?s circumstances required a research design that was both in-depth and long term. The result was a single, exploratory, case study, which included use of data from 44 in-depth, semi-structured interviews, from 36 people, involving all the top management team members and significant other staff members; observations, rumour and grapevine (ORG) data; and archive data, over a 5½ year period (2005 – 2010). Findings confirm the validity of the conceptual framework, and that complex adaptive systems theory has potential to extend strategy development process theory. It has shown how and why the strategy process developed in the case study organisation by providing deeper insights to the behaviour of the people, their backgrounds, and interactions. Broad predictions of the „latent strategy development? process and some elements of the strategy content are also possible. Based on this research, it is possible to extend the utility of the SDP model by including peoples? behavioural characteristics within the organisation, via complex adaptive systems theory. Further research is recommended to test limits of the application of the conceptual framework and improve its efficacy with more organisations across a variety of sectors

    A view of technology as a particular and partial way in which the world is revealed to us rather than as merely a means of producing or manufacturing. 'Being-the-world, ready to hand, present at hand, equipment, signs, conspicuousness, disturbance, region are key concepts in Being and Time which are relevant to an understanding of technology. An examination of Heidegger's explicit writing on technology and an examination of concepts as the 'standing-reserve' (Bestand), the framework (Gestell) and the 'fourfold'. These concepts are examined with reference to more modem everyday encounters with machines, switches, devices and grids. What are the different characterisations of technology? Other ideas test include the viability of describing technology as a distinctly 'modem' phenomena. Is there such a thing as a technological concept of time and if so what are its main features? The second half of the dissertation examines ways in which we may come to regard technology as less than all pervasive, how do we might minimise its claim on us. Thorsten Pattberg's East-West Dichotomy discusses the philosophical concept that two diametrically opposed hemispheres exist - East and West.
