    Multi-item Inventory Problem: Literature Review and a Proposal for Practitioners

    The Application of the EDAS Method in the Parametric Selection Scheme for Maintenance Plans in the Nigerian Food Industry

    Nowadays, maintenance performance in organizations has become compelling due to competitiveness in the global market and the inclusion of more legislation issues (such as safety and health regulations) in assessments. In this article, the purpose is to formulate in maintenance problem for a food processing unit as a multicriteria problem and solve it using the evaluation based on distance from the average solution (EDAS) method. To attain this purpose, the authors defined a set of weighted criteria and a set of alternatives, and the solution is the alternative that scores the best in those criteria. Consequently, analysis was done based on the EDAS method and the calculated results from the literature data. Consequently, the parameters considered include the frequency of failure, MTBF, MTTF and MTTR while availability is the response. The EDAS method was used to select the best alternative (MTTR, 0.8802) and this score of 0.8802 is for an alternative. The chief novelty of this article is the unique introduction of an innovative EDAS method, which requires only two measures of the desirability of alternative (positive and negative distances from the average solution) but excluded the evaluation of the idea and nadir solutions for the key performance indicators of maintenance. Consequently, this study initiates a maintenance plan for the food industry referring to the key performance indicators as a cause for poor availability of equipment in the Nigerian food industry

    A wearable biofeedback device to improve motor symptoms in Parkinson’s disease

    Dissertação de mestrado em Engenharia BiomédicaThis dissertation presents the work done during the fifth year of the course Integrated Master’s in Biomedical Engineering, in Medical Electronics. This work was carried out in the Biomedical & Bioinspired Robotic Devices Lab (BiRD Lab) at the MicroElectroMechanics Center (CMEMS) established at the University of Minho. For validation purposes and data acquisition, it was developed a collaboration with the Clinical Academic Center (2CA), located at Braga Hospital. The knowledge acquired in the development of this master thesis is linked to the motor rehabilitation and assistance of abnormal gait caused by a neurological disease. Indeed, this dissertation has two main goals: (1) validate a wearable biofeedback system (WBS) used for Parkinson's disease patients (PD); and (2) develop a digital biomarker of PD based on kinematic-driven data acquired with the WBS. The first goal aims to study the effects of vibrotactile biofeedback to play an augmentative role to help PD patients mitigate gait-associated impairments, while the second goal seeks to bring a step advance in the use of front-end algorithms to develop a biomarker of PD based on inertial data acquired with wearable devices. Indeed, a WBS is intended to provide motor rehabilitation & assistance, but also to be used as a clinical decision support tool for the classification of the motor disability level. This system provides vibrotactile feedback to PD patients, so that they can integrate it into their normal physiological gait system, allowing them to overcome their gait difficulties related to the level/degree of the disease. The system is based on a user- centered design, considering the end-user driven, multitasking and less cognitive effort concepts. This manuscript presents all steps taken along this dissertation regarding: the literature review and respective critical analysis; implemented tech-based procedures; validation outcomes complemented with results discussion; and main conclusions and future challenges.Esta dissertação apresenta o trabalho realizado durante o quinto ano do curso Mestrado Integrado em Engenharia Biomédica, em Eletrónica Médica. Este trabalho foi realizado no Biomedical & Bioinspired Robotic Devices Lab (BiRD Lab) no MicroElectroMechanics Center (CMEMS) estabelecido na Universidade do Minho. Para efeitos de validação e aquisição de dados, foi desenvolvida uma colaboração com Clinical Academic Center (2CA), localizado no Hospital de Braga. Os conhecimentos adquiridos no desenvolvimento desta tese de mestrado estão ligados à reabilitação motora e assistência de marcha anormal causada por uma doença neurológica. De facto, esta dissertação tem dois objetivos principais: (1) validar um sistema de biofeedback vestível (WBS) utilizado por doentes com doença de Parkinson (DP); e (2) desenvolver um biomarcador digital de PD baseado em dados cinemáticos adquiridos com o WBS. O primeiro objetivo visa o estudo dos efeitos do biofeedback vibrotáctil para desempenhar um papel de reforço para ajudar os pacientes com PD a mitigar as deficiências associadas à marcha, enquanto o segundo objetivo procura trazer um avanço na utilização de algoritmos front-end para biomarcar PD baseado em dados inerciais adquiridos com o dispositivos vestível. De facto, a partir de um WBS pretende-se fornecer reabilitação motora e assistência, mas também utilizá-lo como ferramenta de apoio à decisão clínica para a classificação do nível de deficiência motora. Este sistema fornece feedback vibrotáctil aos pacientes com PD, para que possam integrá-lo no seu sistema de marcha fisiológica normal, permitindo-lhes ultrapassar as suas dificuldades de marcha relacionadas com o nível/grau da doença. O sistema baseia-se numa conceção centrada no utilizador, considerando o utilizador final, multitarefas e conceitos de esforço menos cognitivo.     Using a decision-making process to evaluate efficiency and operating performance for listed semiconductor companies

    Today’s high-tech industries face increasing competition and challenges. Thus, for hightech companies, making effective use of resources to enhance business performance and maintain the competitive advantage in the market has become increasingly important. Therefore, this study aimed to design a decision-making model for evaluating the efficiency and operating performance of Taiwan’s listed semiconductor companies in 2010 to provide a basis for improving business performance. In view of this, this study combines data envelopment analysis (DEA) and improved grey relational analysis (IGRA) as efficiency tools to measure relative efficiencies; the semiconductor companies are divided into two groups, efficient and inefficient. We then integrate the multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) method (e.g. VlseKriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje, VIKOR), IGRA and the entropy weight method to evaluate the operating performance of the efficient and inefficient groups, respectively. Establishing a reasonable, objective and valid evaluation model to measure semiconductor companies’ operating efficiency can provide company managers, investors and policy makers with a reference for performance evaluation.     This book presents the collection of fifty papers which were presented in the Second International Conference on BUSINESS SUSTAINABILITY 2011 - Management, Technology and Learning for Individuals, Organisations and Society in Turbulent Environments , held in Póvoa de Varzim, Portugal, from 22ndto 24thof June, 2011.The main motive of the meeting was growing awareness of the importance of the sustainability issue. This importance had emerged from the growing uncertainty of the market behaviour that leads to the characterization of the market, i.e. environment, as turbulent. Actually, the characterization of the environment as uncertain and turbulent reflects the fact that the traditional technocratic and/or socio-technical approaches cannot effectively and efficiently lead with the present situation. In other words, the rise of the sustainability issue means the quest for new instruments to deal with uncertainty and/or turbulence. The sustainability issue has a complex nature and solutions are sought in a wide range of domains and instruments to achieve and manage it. The domains range from environmental sustainability (referring to natural environment) through organisational and business sustainability towards social sustainability. Concerning the instruments for sustainability, they range from traditional engineering and management methodologies towards “soft” instruments such as knowledge, learning, and creativity. The papers in this book address virtually whole sustainability problems space in a greater or lesser extent. However, although the uncertainty and/or turbulence, or in other words the dynamic properties, come from coupling of management, technology, learning, individuals, organisations and society, meaning that everything is at the same time effect and cause, we wanted to put the emphasis on business with the intention to address primarily companies and their businesses. Due to this reason, the main title of the book is “Business Sustainability 2.0” but with the approach of coupling Management, Technology and Learning for individuals, organisations and society in Turbulent Environments. Also, the notation“2.0” is to promote the publication as a step further from our previous publication – “Business Sustainability I” – as would be for a new version of software. Concerning the Second International Conference on BUSINESS SUSTAINABILITY, its particularity was that it had served primarily as a learning environment in which the papers published in this book were the ground for further individual and collective growth in understanding and perception of sustainability and capacity for building new instruments for business sustainability. In that respect, the methodology of the conference work was basically dialogical, meaning promoting dialog on the papers, but also including formal paper presentations. In this way, the conference presented a rich space for satisfying different authors’ and participants’ needs. Additionally, promoting the widest and global learning environment and participation, in accordance with the Conference's assumed mission to promote Proactive Generative Collaborative Learning, the Conference Organisation shares/puts open to the community the papers presented in this book, as well as the papers presented on the previous Conference(s). These papers can be accessed from the conference webpage (http://labve.dps.uminho.pt/bs11). In these terms, this book could also be understood as a complementary instrument to the Conference authors’ and participants’, but also to the wider readerships’ interested in the sustainability issues. The book brought together 107 authors from 11 countries, namely from Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Serbia, Switzerland, and United States of America. The authors “ranged” from senior and renowned scientists to young researchers providing a rich and learning environment. At the end, the editors hope, and would like, that this book to be useful, meeting the expectation of the authors and wider readership and serving for enhancing the individual and collective learning, and to incentive further scientific development and creation of new papers.     DEVELOPMENT OF DIAGNOSTIC AND PROGNOSTIC METHODOLOGIES FOR ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS BASED ON MAHALANOBIS DISTANCE

    Diagnostic and prognostic capabilities are one aspect of the many interrelated and complementary functions in the field of Prognostic and Health Management (PHM). These capabilities are sought after by industries in order to provide maximum operational availability of their products, maximum usage life, minimum periodic maintenance inspections, lower inventory cost, accurate tracking of part life, and no false alarms. Several challenges associated with the development and implementation of these capabilities are the consideration of a system's dynamic behavior under various operating environments; complex system architecture where the components that form the overall system have complex interactions with each other with feed-forward and feedback loops of instructions; the unavailability of failure precursors; unseen events; and the absence of unique mathematical techniques that can address fault and failure events in various multivariate systems. The Mahalanobis distance methodology distinguishes multivariable data groups in a multivariate system by a univariate distance measure calculated from the normalized value of performance parameters and their correlation coefficients. The Mahalanobis distance measure does not suffer from the scaling effect--a situation where the variability of one parameter masks the variability of another parameter, which happens when the measurement ranges or scales of two parameters are different. A literature review showed that the Mahalanobis distance has been used for classification purposes. In this thesis, the Mahalanobis distance measure is utilized for fault detection, fault isolation, degradation identification, and prognostics. For fault detection, a probabilistic approach is developed to establish threshold Mahalanobis distance, such that presence of a fault in a product can be identified and the product can be classified as healthy or unhealthy. A technique is presented to construct a control chart for Mahalanobis distance for detecting trends and biasness in system health or performance. An error function is defined to establish fault-specific threshold Mahalanobis distance. A fault isolation approach is developed to isolate faults by identifying parameters that are associated with that fault. This approach utilizes the design-of-experiment concept for calculating residual Mahalanobis distance for each parameter (i.e., the contribution of each parameter to a system's health determination). An expected contribution range for each parameter estimated from the distribution of residual Mahalanobis distance is used to isolate the parameters that are responsible for a system's anomalous behavior. A methodology to detect degradation in a system's health using a health indicator is developed. The health indicator is defined as the weighted sum of a histogram bin's fractional contribution. The histogram's optimal bin width is determined from the number of data points in a moving window. This moving window approach is utilized for progressive estimation of the health indicator over time. The health indicator is compared with a threshold value defined from the system's healthy data to indicate the system's health or performance degradation. A symbolic time series-based health assessment approach is developed. Prognostic measures are defined for detecting anomalies in a product and predicting a product's time and probability of approaching a faulty condition. These measures are computed from a hidden Markov model developed from the symbolic representation of product dynamics. The symbolic representation of a product's dynamics is obtained by representing a Mahalanobis distance time series in symbolic form. Case studies were performed to demonstrate the capability of the proposed methodology for real time health monitoring. Notebook computers were exposed to a set of environmental conditions representative of the extremes of their life cycle profiles. The performance parameters were monitored in situ during the experiments, and the resulting data were used as a training dataset. The dataset was also used to identify specific parameter behavior, estimate correlation among parameters, and extract features for defining a healthy baseline. Field-returned computer data and data corresponding to artificially injected faults in computers were used as test data

    Current Studies and Applications of Krill Herd and Gravitational Search Algorithms in Healthcare

    Nature-Inspired Computing or NIC for short is a relatively young field that tries to discover fresh methods of computing by researching how natural phenomena function to find solutions to complicated issues in many contexts. As a consequence of this, ground-breaking research has been conducted in a variety of domains, including synthetic immune functions, neural networks, the intelligence of swarm, as well as computing of evolutionary. In the domains of biology, physics, engineering, economics, and management, NIC techniques are used. In real-world classification, optimization, forecasting, and clustering, as well as engineering and science issues, meta-heuristics algorithms are successful, efficient, and resilient. There are two active NIC patterns: the gravitational search algorithm and the Krill herd algorithm. The study on using the Krill Herd Algorithm (KH) and the Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA) in medicine and healthcare is given a worldwide and historical review in this publication. Comprehensive surveys have been conducted on some other nature-inspired algorithms, including KH and GSA. The various versions of the KH and GSA algorithms and their applications in healthcare are thoroughly reviewed in the present article. Nonetheless, no survey research on KH and GSA in the healthcare field has been undertaken. As a result, this work conducts a thorough review of KH and GSA to assist researchers in using them in diverse domains or hybridizing them with other popular algorithms. It also provides an in-depth examination of the KH and GSA in terms of application, modification, and hybridization. It is important to note that the goal of the study is to offer a viewpoint on GSA with KH, particularly for academics interested in investigating the capabilities and performance of the algorithm in the healthcare and medical domains.Comment: 35 page

    Decision-Making Framework for Medical Equipment Maintenance and Replacement in Private Hospitals

    The process for medical equipment maintenance and replacement in hospitals is a challenging and demanding procedure. Further, the topic of making decisions to maintain or replace or upgrade medical equipment has been debated for a long time since errors equipment maintenance will increase equipment failure at undesirable times; or if early equipment replacement will result in high investment costs and premature disposal. Therefore, standard operating procedures or guidelines need to be in place to help healthcare facilities conduct a more organized and planned maintenance and replacement process. Many hospitals may already have established replacement guidelines or have implemented asset monitoring systems for this purpose. However, the effectiveness of this system has not yet been systematically evaluated. Several studies have been conducted on the same research topic, but most of the findings emphasize the replacement method rather than the criteria that contributed to the decision. Criteria for replacing medical equipment play an important role in ensuring that the equipment can be used cost-effectively. Thus, this research aims to identify important criteria that need to be considered for medical equipment maintenance and replacement focusing on private hospitals. This research was conducted in three phases: (1) a structured literature review; (2) semi-structured interviews with eleven (11) healthcare experts; and (3) a pairwise comparison survey with 50 biomedical engineers. A decision-making framework was developed based on the findings of these three research phases. The framework developed will provide guidelines for practitioners and academics to understand and make better decisions for medical equipment maintenance and replacement in the context of private hospitals
