    A Big Bang Big Crunch Type-2 Fuzzy Logic System for Machine Vision-Based Event Detection and Summarization in Real-world Ambient Assisted Living

    The recent years have witnessed the prevalence and abundance of vision sensors in various applications such as security surveillance, healthcare and Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) among others. This is so as to realize intelligent environments which are capable of detecting users’ actions and gestures so that the needed services can be provided automatically and instantly to maximize user comfort and safety as well as to minimize energy. However, it is very challenging to automatically detect important events and human behaviour from vision sensors and summarize them in real time. This is due to the massive data sizes related to video analysis applications and the high level of uncertainties associated with the real world unstructured environments occupied by various users. Machine vision based systems can help detect and summarize important information which cannot be detected by any other sensor; for example, how much water a candidate drank and whether or not they had something to eat. However, conventional non-fuzzy based methods are not robust enough to recognize the various complex types of behaviour in AAL applications. Fuzzy logic system (FLS) is an established field of research to robustly handle uncertainties in complicated real-world problems. In this thesis, we will present a general recognition and classification framework based on fuzzy logic systems which allows for behaviour recognition and event summarisation using 2D/3D video sensors in AAL applications. I started by investigating the use of 2D CCTV camera based system where I proposed and developed novel IT2FLS-based methods for silhouette extraction and 2D behaviour recognition which outperform the traditional on the publicly available Weizmann human action dataset. I will also present a novel system based on 3D RGB-D vision sensors and Interval Type-2 Fuzzy Logic based Systems (IT2FLSs) ) generated by the Big Bang Big Crunch (BB-BC) algorithm for the real time automatic detection and summarization of important events and human behaviour. I will present several real world experiments which were conducted for AAL related behaviour with various users. It will be shown that the proposed BB-BC IT2FLSs outperforms its Type-1 FLSs (T1FLSs) counterpart as well as other conventional non-fuzzy methods, and that performance improvement rises when the number of subjects increases. It will be shown that by utilizing the recognized output activity together with relevant event descriptions (such as video data, timestamp, location and user identification) detailed events are efficiently summarized and stored in our back-end SQL event database, which provides services including event searching, activity retrieval and high-definition video playback to the front-end user interfaces

Instead, providing highlights of any such shows or game videos then it will be helpful to go through and decide about that video. Also we can provide trailer part of any news/movie videos which can yield to make judgement of those incidents. We propose an interesting principle for highlighting videos mostly they can be online. These online videos can be shortened and summarized the huge video into smaller parts. In order to achieve this we use feature extracting algorithms called the gradient and optical flow histograms (HOG & HOF). In order to enhance the efficiency of the method several optimization techniques are also being implemented

    Relative-fuzzy: a novel approach for handling complex ambiguity for software engineering of data mining models

    There are two main defined classes of uncertainty namely: fuzziness and ambiguity, where ambiguity is ‘one-to-many’ relationship between syntax and semantic of a proposition. This definition seems that it ignores ‘many-to-many’ relationship ambiguity type of uncertainty. In this thesis, we shall use complex-uncertainty to term many-to-many relationship ambiguity type of uncertainty. This research proposes a new approach for handling the complex ambiguity type of uncertainty that may exist in data, for software engineering of predictive Data Mining (DM) classification models. The proposed approach is based on Relative-Fuzzy Logic (RFL), a novel type of fuzzy logic. RFL defines a new formulation of the problem of ambiguity type of uncertainty in terms of States Of Proposition (SOP). RFL describes its membership (semantic) value by using the new definition of Domain of Proposition (DOP), which is based on the relativity principle as defined by possible-worlds logic. To achieve the goal of proposing RFL, a question is needed to be answered, which is: how these two approaches; i.e. fuzzy logic and possible-world, can be mixed to produce a new membership value set (and later logic) that able to handle fuzziness and multiple viewpoints at the same time? Achieving such goal comes via providing possible world logic the ability to quantifying multiple viewpoints and also model fuzziness in each of these multiple viewpoints and expressing that in a new set of membership value. Furthermore, a new architecture of Hierarchical Neural Network (HNN) called ML/RFL-Based Net has been developed in this research, along with a new learning algorithm and new recalling algorithm. The architecture, learning algorithm and recalling algorithm of ML/RFL-Based Net follow the principles of RFL. This new type of HNN is considered to be a RFL computation machine. The ability of the Relative Fuzzy-based DM prediction model to tackle the problem of complex ambiguity type of uncertainty has been tested. Special-purpose Integrated Development Environment (IDE) software, which generates a DM prediction model for speech recognition, has been developed in this research too, which is called RFL4ASR. This special purpose IDE is an extension of the definition of the traditional IDE. Using multiple sets of TIMIT speech data, the prediction model of type ML/RFL-Based Net has classification accuracy of 69.2308%. This accuracy is higher than the best achievements of WEKA data mining machines given the same speech data

    WiFi-Based Human Activity Recognition Using Attention-Based BiLSTM

    Recently, significant efforts have been made to explore human activity recognition (HAR) techniques that use information gathered by existing indoor wireless infrastructures through WiFi signals without demanding the monitored subject to carry a dedicated device. The key intuition is that different activities introduce different multi-paths in WiFi signals and generate different patterns in the time series of channel state information (CSI). In this paper, we propose and evaluate a full pipeline for a CSI-based human activity recognition framework for 12 activities in three different spatial environments using two deep learning models: ABiLSTM and CNN-ABiLSTM. Evaluation experiments have demonstrated that the proposed models outperform state-of-the-art models. Also, the experiments show that the proposed models can be applied to other environments with different configurations, albeit with some caveats. The proposed ABiLSTM model achieves an overall accuracy of 94.03%, 91.96%, and 92.59% across the 3 target environments. While the proposed CNN-ABiLSTM model reaches an accuracy of 98.54%, 94.25% and 95.09% across those same environments

    Establishment of a novel predictive reliability assessment strategy for ship machinery

    There is no doubt that recent years, maritime industry is moving forward to novel and sophisticated inspection and maintenance practices. Nowadays maintenance is encountered as an operational method, which can be employed both as a profit generating process and a cost reduction budget centre through an enhanced Operation and Maintenance (O&M) strategy. In the first place, a flexible framework to be applicable on complex system level of machinery can be introduced towards ship maintenance scheduling of systems, subsystems and components.;This holistic inspection and maintenance notion should be implemented by integrating different strategies, methodologies, technologies and tools, suitably selected by fulfilling the requirements of the selected ship systems. In this thesis, an innovative maintenance strategy for ship machinery is proposed, namely the Probabilistic Machinery Reliability Assessment (PMRA) strategy focusing towards the reliability and safety enhancement of main systems, subsystems and maintainable units and components.;In this respect, the combination of a data mining method (k-means), the manufacturer safety aspects, the dynamic state modelling (Markov Chains), the probabilistic predictive reliability assessment (Bayesian Belief Networks) and the qualitative decision making (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis) is employed encompassing the benefits of qualitative and quantitative reliability assessment. PMRA has been clearly demonstrated in two case studies applied on offshore platform oil and gas and selected ship machinery.;The results are used to identify the most unreliability systems, subsystems and components, while advising suitable practical inspection and maintenance activities.     New Archive-Based Ant Colony Optimization Algorithms for Learning Predictive Rules from Data

    Data mining is the process of extracting knowledge and patterns from data. Classification and Regression are among the major data mining tasks, where the goal is to predict a value of an attribute of interest for each data instance, given the values of a set of predictive attributes. Most classification and regression problems involve continuous, ordinal and categorical attributes. Currently Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithms have focused on directly handling categorical attributes only; continuous attributes are transformed using a discretisation procedure in either a preprocessing stage or dynamically during the rule creation. The use of a discretisation procedure has several limitations: (i) it increases the computational runtime, since several candidates values need to evaluated; (ii) requires access to the entire attribute domain, which in some applications all data is not available; (iii) the values used to create discrete intervals are not optimised in combination with the values of other attributes. This thesis investigates the use of solution archive pheromone model, based on Ant Colony Optimization for mixed-variable (ACOMV) algorithm, to directly cope with all attribute types. Firstly, an archive-based ACO classification algorithm is presented, followed by an automatic design framework to generate new configuration of ACO algorithms. Then, we addressed the challenging problem of mining data streams, presenting a new ACO algorithm in combination with a hybrid pheromone model. Finally, the archive-based approach is extended to cope with regression problems. All algorithms presented are compared against well-known algorithms from the literature using publicly available data sets. Our results have been shown to improve the computational time while maintaining a competitive predictive performance

    A framework development to predict remaining useful life of a gas turbine mechanical component

    Power-by-the-hour is a performance based offering for delivering outstanding service to operators of civil aviation aircraft. Operators need to guarantee to minimise downtime, reduce service cost and ensure value for money which requires an innovative advanced technology for predictive maintenance. Predictability, availability and reliability of the engine offers better service for operators, and the need to estimate the expected component failure prior to failure occurrence requires a proactive approach to predict the remaining useful life of components within an assembly. This research offers a framework for component remaining useful life prediction using assembly level data. The thesis presents a critical analysis on literature identifying the Weibull method, statistical technique and data-driven methodology relating to remaining useful life prediction, which are used in this research. The AS-IS practice captures relevant information based on the investigation conducted in the aerospace industry. The analysis of maintenance cycles relates to the examination of high-level events for engine availability, whereby more communications with industry showcase a through-life performance timeline visualisation. Overhaul sequence and activities are presented to gain insights of the timeline visualisation. The thesis covers the framework development and application to gas turbine single stage assembly, repair and replacement of components in single stage assembly, and multiple stage assembly. The framework is demonstrated in aerospace engines and power generation engines. The framework developed enables and supports domain experts to quickly respond to, and prepare for maintenance and on-time delivery of spare parts. The results of the framework show the probability of failure based on a pair of error values using the corresponding Scale and Shape parameters. The probability of failure is transformed into the remaining useful life depicting a typical Weibull distribution. The resulting Weibull curves developed with three scenarios of the case shows there are components renewals, therefore, the remaining useful life of the components are established. The framework is validated and verified through a case study with three scenarios and also through expert judgement
