    Real Time UAV Altitude, Attitude and Motion Estimation form Hybrid Stereovision

    International audienceKnowledge of altitude, attitude and motion is essential for an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle during crit- ical maneuvers such as landing and take-off. In this paper we present a hybrid stereoscopic rig composed of a fisheye and a perspective camera for vision-based navigation. In contrast to classical stereoscopic systems based on feature matching, we propose methods which avoid matching between hybrid views. A plane-sweeping approach is proposed for estimating altitude and de- tecting the ground plane. Rotation and translation are then estimated by decoupling: the fisheye camera con- tributes to evaluating attitude, while the perspective camera contributes to estimating the scale of the trans- lation. The motion can be estimated robustly at the scale, thanks to the knowledge of the altitude. We propose a robust, real-time, accurate, exclusively vision-based approach with an embedded C++ implementation. Although this approach removes the need for any non-visual sensors, it can also be coupled with an Inertial Measurement Unit

    Stereo Matching in Address-Event-Representation (AER) Bio-Inspired Binocular Systems in a Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA)

    In stereo-vision processing, the image-matching step is essential for results, although it involves a very high computational cost. Moreover, the more information is processed, the more time is spent by the matching algorithm, and the more ine cient it is. Spike-based processing is a relatively new approach that implements processing methods by manipulating spikes one by one at the time they are transmitted, like a human brain. The mammal nervous system can solve much more complex problems, such as visual recognition by manipulating neuron spikes. The spike-based philosophy for visual information processing based on the neuro-inspired address-event-representation (AER) is currently achieving very high performance. The aim of this work was to study the viability of a matching mechanism in stereo-vision systems, using AER codification and its implementation in a field-programmable gate array (FPGA). Some studies have been done before in an AER system with monitored data using a computer; however, this kind of mechanism has not been implemented directly on hardware. To this end, an epipolar geometry basis applied to AER systems was studied and implemented, with other restrictions, in order to achieve good results in a real-time scenario.     Panoramic Stereovision and Scene Reconstruction

    With advancement of research in robotics and computer vision, an increasingly high number of applications require the understanding of a scene in three dimensions. A variety of systems are deployed to do the same. This thesis explores a novel 3D imaging technique. This involves the use of catadioptric cameras in a stereoscopic arrangement. A secondary system aims to stabilize the system in the event that the cameras are misaligned during operation. The system provides a stark advantage due to it being a cost effective alternative to present day standard state-of-the-art systems that achieve the same goal of 3D imaging. The compromise lies in the quality of depth estimation, which can be overcome with a different imager and calibration. The result was a panoramic disparity map generated by the system

    A proposal for automatic fruit harvesting by combining a low cost stereovision camera and a robotic arm

    This paper proposes the development of an automatic fruit harvesting system by combining a low cost stereovision camera and a robotic arm placed in the gripper tool. The stereovision camera is used to estimate the size, distance and position of the fruits whereas the robotic arm is used to mechanically pickup the fruits. The low cost stereovision system has been tested in laboratory conditions with a reference small object, an apple and a pear at 10 different intermediate distances from the camera. The average distance error was from 4% to 5%, and the average diameter error was up to 30% in the case of a small object and in a range from 2% to 6% in the case of a pear and an apple. The stereovision system has been attached to the gripper tool in order to obtain relative distance, orientation and size of the fruit. The harvesting stage requires the initial fruit location, the computation of the inverse kinematics of the robotic arm in order to place the gripper tool in front of the fruit, and a final pickup approach by iteratively adjusting the vertical and horizontal position of the gripper tool in a closed visual loop. The complete system has been tested in controlled laboratory conditions with uniform illumination applied to the fruits. As a future work, this system will be tested and improved in conventional outdoor farming conditions

    Developing Interaction 3D Models for E-Learning Applications

    Some issues concerning the development of interactive 3D models for e-learning applications are considered. Given that 3D data sets are normally large and interactive display demands high performance computation, a natural solution would be placing the computational burden on the client machine rather than on the server. Mozilla and Google opted for a combination of client-side languages, JavaScript and OpenGL, to handle 3D graphics in a web browser (Mozilla 3D and O3D respectively). Based on the O3D model, core web technologies are considered and an example of the full process involving the generation of a 3D model and their interactive visualization in a web browser is described. The challenging issue of creating realistic 3D models of objects in the real world is discussed and a method based on line projection for fast 3D reconstruction is presented. The generated model is then visualized in a web browser. The experiments demonstrate that visualization of 3D data in a web browser can provide quality user experience. Moreover, the development of web applications are facilitated by O3D JavaScript extension allowing web designers to focus on 3D contents generation

    Three-dimensional contact patch strain measurement inside rolling off-Road tyres

    The forces generated in the tyre contact-patch are important for vehicle dynamics analysis. The tyre contact patch is not directly visible due to the terrain. Measuring the strain in the contact patch region may give insight into the forces generated by the tyre as it deforms. Strain measurement in the contact patch is often limited to discrete points, using strain gauges or other techniques which limits data capture to once per revolution. In this study stereovision cameras are used to capture unique features in the pattern painted on the tyres inner surface. An in-tyre mechanically stabilized camera system allows the contact patch to be captured continuously and the stereovision cameras allow for full field measurement of the tyre inner surface. In post processing the features are tracked and triangulated to form point-clouds for each time step. Point-clouds are compared to determine the strain of common points in two directions. The system is applied to an agricultural tyre with large tread-blocks. The wheel is instrumented to measure pressure and forces. The tyre is tested statically in a series of tyre tests where the lateral, longitudinal and vertical displacement is controlled. The strain measured in the tyre contact patch region is compared to the forces measured at the wheel centre. It is noticed that as the measured forces increases so too does the magnitudes of the strains. Unique patterns are found in the contact patch strain for each test type. These patterns could be used to identify the type of forces experienced by the wheel while the strain magnitude could give an indication of the magnitude of the forces.     International audienceObstacle detection is an essential task for mobile robots. This subject has been investigated for many years by researchers and a lot of obstacle detection systems have been proposed so far. Yet designing an accurate and totally robust and reliable system remains a challenging task, above all in outdoor environments. Thus, the purpose of this chapter is to present new techniques and tools to design an accurate, robust and reliable obstacle detection system in outdoor environments based on a minimal number of sensors. So far, experiments and assessments of already developed systems show that using a single sensor is not enough to meet the requirements: at least two complementary sensors are needed. In this chapter a stereovision sensor and a 2D laser scanner are considered
