OpenPING: A Reflective Middleware for the Construction of Adaptive Networked Game Applications
The emergence of distributed Virtual Reality (VR) applications
that run over the Internet has presented networked game
application designers with new challenges. In an environment
where the public internet streams multimedia data and is
constantly under pressure to deliver over widely heterogeneous
user-platforms, there has been a growing need that distributed VR
applications be aware of and adapt to frequent variations in their
context of execution. In this paper, we argue that in contrast to
research efforts targeted at improvement of scalability, persistence
and responsiveness capabilities, much less attempts have been
aimed at addressing the flexibility, maintainability and
extensibility requirements in contemporary distributed VR
platforms. We propose the use of structural reflection as an
approach that not only addresses these requirements but also
offers added value in the form of providing a framework for
scalability, persistence and responsiveness that is itself flexible,
maintainable and extensible. We also present an adaptive
middleware platform implementation called OpenPING1 that
supports our proposal in addressing these requirements
Modeling adaptation with a tuple-based coordination language
In recent years, it has been argued that systems and applications, in order to deal with their increasing complexity, should be able to adapt their behavior according to new requirements or environment conditions. In this paper, we present a preliminary investigation aiming at studying how coordination languages and formal methods can contribute to a better understanding, implementation and usage of the mechanisms and techniques for adaptation currently proposed in the literature. Our study relies on the formal coordination language Klaim as a common framework for modeling some adaptation techniques, namely the MAPE-K loop, aspect- and context-oriented programming

Using problem descriptions to represent variabilities for context-aware applications
This paper investigates the potential use of problem descriptions to represent and analyse variability in context-aware software products. By context-aware, we refer to recognition of changes in properties of external domains, which are recognised as affecting the behaviour of products. There are many reasons for changes in the operating environment, from fluctuating resources upon which the product relies, to different operating locations or the presence of objects. There is an increasing expectation for software intensivedevices to be context-aware which, in turn, adds further variability to problem description and analysis. However, we argue in this paper that the capture of contextual variability on current variability representations and analyses has yet to be explored. We illustrate the representation of this type of variability in a pilot study, and conclude with lessons learnt and an agenda for further work
Exploring the requirements process for a complex, adaptive system in a high risk software development environment
This work ties together research from a number of different areas to show how the develop-ment of a complex adaptive system for an industrial company has a number of difficulties given the current state of the art. The INFER system which is a Complex Adaptive System (CAS) has a number of attributes which mean that current requirements and indeed develop-ment processes are not able to cope with them adequately. A CAS can be recognised by the fact that it consists of a number of agents acting together dynamically resulting in emergent behaviour. This emergent behaviour cannot be predicted and thus, along with other phenom-ena such as reaction to and with the environment and deciding the different responsibilities of the components means that the requirements process for such a system is a current research area. A retrospective case study is underway to capture the rich data available from the ex-periences of building such a syste
Adaptable transition systems
We present an essential model of adaptable transition systems inspired by white-box approaches to adaptation and based on foundational models of component based systems. The key feature of adaptable transition systems are control propositions, imposing a clear separation between ordinary, functional behaviours and adaptive ones. We instantiate our approach on interface automata yielding adaptable interface automata, but it may be instantiated on other foundational models of component-based systems as well. We discuss how control propositions can be exploited in the specification and analysis of adaptive systems, focusing on various notions proposed in the literature, like adaptability, control loops, and control synthesis
Issues of Architectural Description Languages for Handling Dynamic Reconfiguration
Dynamic reconfiguration is the action of modifying a software system at
runtime. Several works have been using architectural specification as the basis
for dynamic reconfiguration. Indeed ADLs (architecture description languages)
let architects describe the elements that could be reconfigured as well as the
set of constraints to which the system must conform during reconfiguration. In
this work, we investigate the ADL literature in order to illustrate how
reconfiguration is supported in four well-known ADLs: pi-ADL, ACME, C2SADL and
Dynamic Wright. From this review, we conclude that none of these ADLs: (i)
addresses the issue of consistently reconfiguring both instances and types;
(ii) takes into account the behaviour of architectural elements during
reconfiguration; and (iii) provides support for assessing reconfiguration,
