Fostering Music Performers in the 21st Century: A Contemporary Professional Perspective toward a New Curricular Agenda for Graduate Study in Music

What if the core curriculum for graduate students in music performance were designed to prepare students to succeed in the world of the Fourth Industrial Revolution? This dissertation offers a hypothetical answer: a structured and systematic academic curricular framework for music graduate students of performance of concert music (especially those in terminal degrees, such as doctoral students), along with music instructors, professional music performers, school administrators, and college professors, seeking to prepare such students for achieving and maintaining a music career more in keeping with the current work environment, especially those skills demanded by the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the current cultural moment. Syllabi designed by the author for the proposed curriculum are included. This research is supported by various studies: of the Paris Conservatory, the first state school created during the period of the First Industrial Revolution; of the curriculum of selected outstanding current institutions in the United States; and an analysis of a comprehensive bibliography of recent publications on the topic of the skills needed by current performers of concert music. The conclusion advocates the development of a new curricular area in music performance: “Professional Musicianship.

THE BEES’ HONEY: REMARKS ON STUDENTS AS AGENTS OF KNOWLEDGE IN RENAISSANCE EUROPE THROUGH THE CASE OF SIMON CLÜVER (1540–1598)

This article argues that the notebooks produced by students during their stay abroad can become precious documentary evidence of early modern knowledge creation and organization. From the second half of the fifteenth century an unprecedented availability of paper led students to take notes freely on anything they considered useful or interesting for their education and, more generally, for their future. The case study of the notebooks belonging to a student from Danzig who stayed in Wittenberg in the 1560s, will show how the multi-text documents produced by students contribute to a better understanding of both their educational needs and their original reworking of academic knowledge

    Rischi sistemici e regolamentazione macroprudenziale

A Study of the English Language and Its Effects on Vocal Technique

    Get PDF
There is a widely accepted view by voice teachers at all levels that the English language poses significant challenges for the classical singer in both diction and technique. For the native speaker, this notion may be puzzling and frustrating. This study aims to research and provide pedagogical strategies to assist the teacher and aid the student in singing English successfully and with effective classical technique. The primary research question is: What are the main challenges of singing English diction with classical technique? Other sub-questions include 1) How do period and style affect how the language is sung? 2) To what extent do regionalism and dialect affect language delivery? 3) What pedagogical strategies aid the singer in conquering these technical challenges? The research will look at prominent diction and technical pedagogues in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries for insight. The peculiar qualities of the language, the vast array of musical literature throughout the eras, and the variety of forms the language takes on via differing countries, regions, and dialects provide a set of challenges that can easily confuse or overwhelm any singer, particularly the developing one. This research applies to singers seeking consistency and excellence in their English diction and any teacher pursuing effective pedagogical strategies in their students\u27 vocal development

Collaborative Workspaces within Distributed Virtual Environments

In warfare, be it a training simulation or actual combat, a commander\u27s time is one of the most valuable and fleeting resources of a military unit. Thus, it is natural for a unit to have a plethora of personnel to analyze and filter information to the decision-maker. This dynamic exchange of ideas between analyst and commander is currently not available within the distributed interactive simulation (DIS) community. This lack of exchange limits the usefulness of the DIS experience to the commander and his troops. This thesis addresses the commander\u27s isolation problem through the integration of a collaborative workspace within AFIT\u27s Synthetic BattleBridge (SBB) as a technique to improve situational awareness. The SBB\u27s Collaborative Workspace enhances battlespace awareness through CSCW (computer supported cooperative work) enabling communication technologies. The SBB\u27s Collaborative Workspace allows the user to interact with other SBB users through the transmission and reception of public bulletins, private email, real-time chat sessions, shared viewpoints, shared video, and shared annotations to the virtual environment. Collaborative communication between SBB occurs through the use of standard and experimental DIS-compliant protocol data units. The SBB\u27s Collaborative Workspace gives the battlespace commander the widest range of communication options available within a DIS virtual environment today

From the twenty-fifth to the thirtieth of January, 2009, the Dagstuhl Seminar 09051 on ``Knowledge representation for intelligent music processing\u27\u27 was held in Schloss Dagstuhl~--~Leibniz Centre for Informatics. During the seminar, several participants presented their current research, and ongoing work and open problems were discussed. Abstracts of the presentations and demos given during the seminar as well as plenary presentations, reports of workshop discussions, results and ideas are put together in this paper. The first section describes the seminar topics and goals in general, followed by plenary `stimulus\u27 papers, followed by reports and abstracts arranged by workshop followed finally by some concluding materials providing views of both the seminar itself and also forward to the longer-term goals of the discipline. Links to extended abstracts, full papers and supporting materials are provided, if available. The organisers thank David Lewis for editing these proceedings
