    The future of technology enhanced active learning – a roadmap

    The notion of active learning refers to the active involvement of learner in the learning process, capturing ideas of learning-by-doing and the fact that active participation and knowledge construction leads to deeper and more sustained learning. Interactivity, in particular learnercontent interaction, is a central aspect of technology-enhanced active learning. In this roadmap, the pedagogical background is discussed, the essential dimensions of technology-enhanced active learning systems are outlined and the factors that are expected to influence these systems currently and in the future are identified. A central aim is to address this promising field from a best practices perspective, clarifying central issues and formulating an agenda for future developments in the form of a roadmap

    About the necessity and usefulness of developing a philosophy specific to the blockchain technology, emphasizing on the ontological aspects. After an Introduction that highlights the main philosophical directions for this emerging technology, in Blockchain Technology I explain the way the blockchain works, discussing ontological development directions of this technology in Designing and Modeling. The next section is dedicated to the main application of blockchain technology, Bitcoin, with the social implications of this cryptocurrency. There follows a section of Philosophy in which I identify the blockchain technology with the concept of heterotopia developed by Michel Foucault and I interpret it in the light of the notational technology developed by Nelson Goodman as a notational system. In the Ontology section, I present two developmental paths that I consider important: Narrative Ontology, based on the idea of order and structure of history transmitted through Paul Ricoeur's narrative history, and the Enterprise Ontology system based on concepts and models of an enterprise, specific to the semantic web, and which I consider to be the most well developed and which will probably become the formal ontological system, at least in terms of the economic and legal aspects of blockchain technology. In Conclusions I am talking about the future directions of developing the blockchain technology philosophy in general as an explanatory and robust theory from a phenomenologically consistent point of view, which allows testability and ontologies in particular, arguing for the need of a global adoption of an ontological system for develop cross-cutting solutions and to make this technology profitable.     Interactive correction and recommendation for computer language learning and training

    Active learning and training is a particularly effective form of education. In various domains, skills are equally important to knowledge. We present an automated learning and skills training system for a database programming environment that promotes procedural knowledge acquisition and skills training. The system provides meaningful, knowledge-level feedback such as correction of student solutions and personalised guidance through recommendations. Specifically, we address automated synchronous feedback and recommendations based on personalised performance assessment. At the core of the tutoring system is a pattern-based error classification and correction component that analyses student input in order to provide immediate feedback and in order to diagnose student weaknesses and suggest further study material. A syntax-driven approach based on grammars and syntax trees provides the solution for a semantic analysis technique. Syntax tree abstractions and comparison techniques based on equivalence rules and pattern matching are specific approaches

    Abductive speech act recognition, corporate agents and the COSMA system

    This chapter presents an overview of the DISCO project\u27s solutions to several problems in natural language pragmatics. Its central focus is on relating utterances to intentions through speech act recognition. Subproblems include the incorporation of linguistic cues into the speech act recognition process, precise and efficient multiagent belief attribution models (Corporate Agents), and speech act representation and processing using Corporate Agents. These ideas are being tested within the COSMA appointment scheduling system, one application of the DISCO natural language interface. Abductive speech act processing in this environment is not far from realizing its potential for fully bidirectional implementation

    Understanding Optical Music Recognition

    For over 50 years, researchers have been trying to teach computers to read music notation, referred to as Optical Music Recognition (OMR). However, this field is still difficult to access for new researchers, especially those without a significant musical background: Few introductory materials are available, and, furthermore, the field has struggled with defining itself and building a shared terminology. In this work, we address these shortcomings by (1) providing a robust definition of OMR and its relationship to related fields, (2) analyzing how OMR inverts the music encoding process to recover the musical notation and the musical semantics from documents, and (3) proposing a taxonomy of OMR, with most notably a novel taxonomy of applications. Additionally, we discuss how deep learning affects modern OMR research, as opposed to the traditional pipeline. Based on this work, the reader should be able to attain a basic understanding of OMR: its objectives, its inherent structure, its relationship to other fields, the state of the art, and the research opportunities it affords

    Database support for large-scale multimedia retrieval

    With the increasing proliferation of recording devices and the resulting abundance of multimedia data available nowadays, searching and managing these ever-growing collections becomes more and more difficult. In order to support retrieval tasks within large multimedia collections, not only the sheer size, but also the complexity of data and their associated metadata pose great challenges, in particular from a data management perspective. Conventional approaches to address this task have been shown to have only limited success, particularly due to the lack of support for the given data and the required query paradigms. In the area of multimedia research, the missing support for efficiently and effectively managing multimedia data and metadata has recently been recognised as a stumbling block that constraints further developments in the field. In this thesis, we bridge the gap between the database and the multimedia retrieval research areas. We approach the problem of providing a data management system geared towards large collections of multimedia data and the corresponding query paradigms. To this end, we identify the necessary building-blocks for a multimedia data management system which adopts the relational data model and the vector-space model. In essence, we make the following main contributions towards a holistic model of a database system for multimedia data: We introduce an architectural model describing a data management system for multimedia data from a system architecture perspective. We further present a data model which supports the storage of multimedia data and the corresponding metadata, and provides similarity-based search operations. This thesis describes an extensive query model for a very broad range of different query paradigms specifying both logical and executional aspects of a query. Moreover, we consider the efficiency and scalability of the system in a distribution and a storage model, and provide a large and diverse set of index structures for high-dimensional data coming from the vector-space model. Thee developed models crystallise into the scalable multimedia data management system ADAMpro which has been implemented within the iMotion/vitrivr retrieval stack. We quantitatively evaluate our concepts on collections that exceed the current state of the art. The results underline the benefits of our approach and assist in understanding the role of the introduced concepts. Moreover, the findings provide important implications for future research in the field of multimedia data management

    Pattern languages in HCI: A critical review

    This article presents a critical review of patterns and pattern languages in human-computer interaction (HCI). In recent years, patterns and pattern languages have received considerable attention in HCI for their potential as a means for developing and communicating information and knowledge to support good design. This review examines the background to patterns and pattern languages in HCI, and seeks to locate pattern languages in relation to other approaches to interaction design. The review explores four key issues: What is a pattern? What is a pattern language? How are patterns and pattern languages used? and How are values reflected in the pattern-based approach to design? Following on from the review, a future research agenda is proposed for patterns and pattern languages in HCI
