    Materials Handling Vehicles : Policy Framework for an Emerging Fuel Cell Market

Open access under CC BY-NC-ND licenseThere are several challenges to wide-spread commercialisation of the technology hydrogen fuel-cell technology; including reliability and cost implications, infrastructure requirements, and safety aspects of the upcoming technology. Targeted policy initiatives are required to address two significant bottlenecks; reliability and cost constraints. Such policy measures and financial mechanisms providing incentives for manufacturers and end-users of the novel technology create an initial impetus for the introduction of the forthcoming technology into the market place. The current approach, policy mechanisms and their impacts are reviewed in the context of demonstration projects, deploying material handling equipment, involving public-private initiatives.Final Published versio

    The ATHENE project:the importance of bricolage in personalising assisted living technologies

    Introduction: An aging population is fueling interest in assisted living technologies (ALTs) to support independence at home. Numerous ALTs have been developed and deployed, but uptake and use has fallen short of levels predicted by policymakers. A key reason is a lack of understanding of users’ needs. In this paper we report findings from the ATHENE (Assistive Technologies for Healthy Living in Elders: Needs Assessment by Ethnography) project, which is funded by the Technology Strategy Board under its Assisted Living Innovation Platform programme. The project aims to produce a richer understanding of the lived experiences and needs of older people and explore how ALT stakeholders – suppliers, health and social care providers – can work with users and carers to ‘coproduce’ ALTs. We focus, in particular, on the role of ‘bricolage’ (pragmatic customisation, combining new with legacy devices) by informal carers, such as family members, in enabling ALTs to be personalised to individual needs. Bricolage allows users and family members to take the initiative in ‘coproducing’ ALTs. that making assisted living work relies on collaboration, involving not only formal carers, but also informal ones. We argue that a new research agenda is needed, focusing on solving challenges of involving users and their informal carers in the straightforward and dependable co-production of ALTs

    Clean birth kits to improve birth practices: development and testing of a country level decision support tool

    Background: Clean birth practices can prevent sepsis, one of the leading causes of both maternal and newborn mortality. Evidence suggests that clean birth kits (CBKs), as part of package that includes education, are associated with a reduction in newborn mortality, omphalitis, and puerperal sepsis. However, questions remain about how best to approach the introduction of CBKs in country. We set out to develop a practical decision support tool for programme managers of public health systems who are considering the potential role of CBKs in their strategy for care at birth. Methods: Development and testing of the decision support tool was a three-stage process involving an international expert group and country level testing. Stage 1, the development of the tool was undertaken by the Birth Kit Working Group and involved a review of the evidence, a consensus meeting, drafting of the proposed tool and expert review. In Stage 2 the tool was tested with users through interviews (9) and a focus group, with federal and provincial level decision makers in Pakistan. In Stage 3 the findings from the country level testing were reviewed by the expert group. Results: The decision support tool comprised three separate algorithms to guide the policy maker or programme manager through the specific steps required in making the country level decision about whether to use CBKs. The algorithms were supported by a series of questions (that could be administered by interview, focus group or questionnaire) to help the decision maker identify the information needed. The country level testing revealed that the decision support tool was easy to follow and helpful in making decisions about the potential role of CBKs. Minor modifications were made and the final algorithms are presented. Conclusion: Testing of the tool with users in Pakistan suggests that the tool facilitates discussion and aids decision making. However, testing in other countries is needed to determine whether these results can be replicated and to identify how the tool can be adapted to meet country specific needs

    Automated Shuttles as Traffic Calming: Evidence from a Pilot Study in City Traffic

    Discourse about the real-world effects of automated vehicles has intensified over the last decade, but few observational studies have been made examining their integration in real traffic. This research is based on the dataset prepared by Beauchamp et al. in [1] where video footage from two pilot projects involving automated shuttles in Montreal and Candiac in 2019 was analyzed to compute safety indicators from road user trajectories. The study showed that automated shuttles have safer interactions with other road users compared to human drivers following the same trajectories. Yet, this may not be the only characteristic of automated shuttles. These vehicles are notoriously slow, 10 to 15 km/h slower than human-driven cars in city traffic [1], which on city streets is bound to influence other road users, in particular following cars. lt is therefore hypothesized that automated shuttles may have a traflic calming effect, slowing other motorized vehicles [2]. Slower speed and the predictability of automated shuttles, obeying the rules of the road and yielding more willingly to vulnerable road users (pedestrians and cyclists) may also have an impact on these users' behavior [3]: for example, cyclists may pass the shuttle, pedestrians may cross outside of crosswalks.     Development and Pilot of a Checklist for Management of Acute Liver Failure in the Intensive Care Unit

    Introduction Acute liver failure (ALF) is an ideal condition for use of a checklist. Our aims were to develop a checklist for the management of ALF in the intensive care unit (ICU) and assess the usability of the checklist among multiple providers. Methods The initial checklist was developed from published guidelines and expert opinion. The checklist underwent pilot testing at 11 academic liver transplant centers in the US and Canada. An anonymous, written survey was used to assess the usability and quality of the checklist. Written comments were used to improve the checklist following the pilot testing period. Results We received 81 surveys involving the management of 116 patients during the pilot testing period. The overall quality of the checklist was judged to be above average to excellent by 94% of users. On a 5-point Likert scale, the majority of survey respondents agreed or agreed strongly with the following checklist characteristics: the checklist was easy to read (99% agreed/agreed strongly), easy to use (97%), items are categorized logically (98%), time to complete the checklist did not interfere with delivery of appropriate and safe patient care (94%) and was not excessively burdensome (92%), the checklist allowed the user the freedom to use his or her clinical judgment (80%), it is a useful tool in the management of acute liver failure (98%). Web-based and mobile apps were developed for use of the checklist at the point of care. Conclusion The checklist for the management of ALF in the ICU was shown in this pilot study to be easy to use, helpful and accepted by a wide variety of practitioners at multiple sites in the US and Canada

    Co-designing a mental health training curriculum for staff in the vision impairment sector

    Depression and anxiety are common in people with congenital and acquired vision impairment but often go unaddressed. Staff from a variety of professions and roles in the sight impairment sector are well placed to identify mental health issues and signpost individuals for support. However, many of these individuals need training to do this competently. The aim of this project was to develop a mental health training curriculum for staff. We used a seven-step method involving staff and service users from national sight loss charities & local authority and university researchers. The result was a curriculum containing five modules covering an introduction to mental wellbeing, the use of a standardised depression and anxiety screening tool, referral and support options and implementation issues to consider. Future work involves developing the curriculum into an online training programme for wide dissemination across the sight loss sector

    This research was structured to find out and analyze the effectiveness of public services in Demak district, especially in the Demak district government's reporting channel. Along with technological developments, the Demak Regency Communication and Informatics Service (DINKOMINFO) is moving to provide efforts and innovation on issues regarding public services. The program provided is in the form of public services in the form of reports through booths, websites, SMS, social media, and applications to convey public complaints. This research is a qualitative descriptive study with a process of document analysis and observation. The information taken comes from a sample involving the people of Demak district. At this stage of the study, an analysis of public knowledge and the effectiveness of the number of users of the complaint report service was used, namely Hallo Demak and the SP4N report application, Demak district. The results of the study obtained the effectiveness of public services in Demak district through SP4N reports that the Demak district had experienced an increase in the range from December 2020 to mid-January 2021 in a period of 1.5 months receiving a total of 212 complaints, but the data was not optimal and uneven. There are still many people who do not know and even use the service. The lack of equality in the form of direct introduction and involving many parties such as students, university students, laborers, village officials, has an effect on ordinary people to participate and feel the benefits of the facilities provided.   Keywords: SPAN; Report; Introduction; Benefits

    The first chapter "Digitization of Cultural Heritage – Standards, Institutions, Initiatives" provides an introduction to the area of digitisation. The main pillars of process of creating, preserving and accessing of cultural heritage in digital space are observed. The importance of metadata in the process of accessing to information is outlined. The metadata schemas and standards used in cultural heritage are discussed. In order to reach digital objects in virtual space they are organized in digital libraries. Contemporary digital libraries are trying to deliver richer and better functionality, which usually is user oriented and depending on current IT trend. Additionally, the chapter is focused on some initiatives on world and European level that during the years enforce the process of digitization and organizing digital objects in the cultural heritage domain. In recent years, the main focus in the creation of digital resources shifts from "system-centred" to "user-centred" since most of the issues around this content are related to making it accessible and usable for the real users.     The Effect of Dispositional Resistance to Change on Perceived Ease of Use

    The introduction of new information systems often involves user resistance due to the changes associated with adopting new technologies. Therefore, it is important to understand how individuals’ resistance to change influences their perceptions of new technologies. Personality traits are commonly used in the psychology literature to explain human beliefs and behavior across different domains, and recently see a growing interest in the IS literature as an explanatory tool in the domain of technology related behavior. Research in social psychology has found Resistance to Change (RTC) to be a fundamental personality trait that influences individuals’ beliefs and behavior in situations involving change. In the present study we explore the relationship between RTC and Perceived Ease of Use, using a survey of 170 users of a digital library system. The preliminary findings suggest that RTC is a significant determinant of perceived ease of use. Implications of the findings are discussed
