    Refrigeration Capacity and Effect of Ageing on the Operation of Cellulose Evaporative Cooling Pads, by Wind Tunnel Analysis

    This study investigates the temperature reduction capacity and water consumption of a fan-pad system installed in a greenhouse located in the coastal regions of Almería. The suitability of this system for coastal zones with high environmental humidity during the summer is analyzed. Historical temperature and relative humidity series are studied, obtaining the thermal difference and maximum, medium, and minimum monthly water consumption of the pads based on the operation data of the pads. Despite the high relative humidity of the air in the hottest hours of the day, a decrease of 5.92 ºC in the mean temperature and a water consumption of 13.55 l/h per square meter of an evaporative cooling pad are obtained in the month of August. Additionally, the operation of a cellulose evaporative cooling pad installed for 3 years in a greenhouse is analyzed in a wind tunnel and compared with that of a new pad of the same model. Over time and with low maintenance, the porosity of the pad decreases due to salt incrustation. The salt incrustation makes airflow more difficult in the pad, increasing the pressure drop by 170.04%; however, the air saturation efficiency of the pad increases by 6.6% due to the greater contact time between the air and the waterMinisterio de Economía y Competitividad de España AGL2015-68050-RUnión Europea (FEDER) AGL2015-68050-

    ABSTRACT The growth of the world’s population leads to increased energy needs. The use of fossil energy leads to challenges. The main reason for this is that the use of fossil fuels has a negative impact on global climate change, and the world is heading towards running out of fossil fuels in a few years. Renewable energy sources like photovoltaic and wind power plants are good solutions for those challenges. For the generation of clean energy, batteries are not necessary. Most renewable energy sources are intermittent in nature, which is why battery energy storage systems could be useful. There are mainly two types of converters for converting direct current to alternating current. They are voltage-source inverters and current source inverters. A voltage source inverter is well-known and widely used in many industrial applications. But a little research has been done about current source inverters due to some problems such as open circuits and large inductances on the DC side. The project deals with the Current Source Inverter for Battery Energy Storage System. The main objective of this project is to model, design, control, and simulation a current source inverter and analyse the advantages and disadvantages of both converters, with focus on the current source inverter. In this thesis, a cascaded control structure is used for controlling three-phase grid-connected CSI. Current and voltage control design and simulation of CSI will be the focus. The proportional integral controller (PI-controller) is used to control the inverter. To verify the theoretical study, a simulation model in MATLAB/Simulink is built and verified.     Heterogeneous multi-robot system for mapping environmental variables of greenhouses

    The productivity of greenhouses highly depends on the environmental conditions of crops, such as temperature and humidity. The control and monitoring might need large sensor networks, and as a consequence, mobile sensory systems might be a more suitable solution. This paper describes the application of a heterogeneous robot team to monitor environmental variables of greenhouses. The multi-robot system includes both ground and aerial vehicles, looking to provide flexibility and improve performance. The multi-robot sensory system measures the temperature, humidity, luminosity and carbon dioxide concentration in the ground and at different heights. Nevertheless, these measurements can be complemented with other ones (e.g., the concentration of various gases or images of crops) without a considerable effort. Additionally, this work addresses some relevant challenges of multi-robot sensory systems, such as the mission planning and task allocation, the guidance, navigation and control of robots in greenhouses and the coordination among ground and aerial vehicles.     Effects of ventilator configuration on the flow pattern of a naturally-ventilated three-span Mediterranean greenhouse

    Natural ventilation used in agricultural greenhouses is important to control greenhouse microclimate. The effect of the ventilator configuration on the flow pattern of a three-span Mediterranean greenhouse with an obstacle to airflow (a neighbouring greenhouse) was investigated. Two different ventilator configurations, two or three half-arch roof vents with two roll-up side vents, were evaluated using sonic anemometry. It was observed that the flow pattern through the greenhouse depends of the ventilation surfaces distribution and the obstruction to the ventilation system. Moreover, the magnitude and distribution of ventilation surface affected the overall ventilation rate and the ventilation rate at plant level. The ventilator configuration with two roof and two side vents improved air movement at the plant level, although the overall volumetric flow rate was lower than that with three roof and two side vents

    The purpose of this catalog is to assist small business firms in making the community aware of products emerging from their efforts in the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. It contains descriptions of some products that have advanced into Phase 3 and others that are identified as prospective products. Both lists of products in this catalog are based on information supplied by NASA SBIR contractors in responding to an invitation to be represented in this document. Generally, all products suggested by the small firms were included in order to meet the goals of information exchange for SBIR results. Of the 444 SBIR contractors NASA queried, 137 provided information on 219 products. The catalog presents the product information in the technology areas listed in the table of contents. Within each area, the products are listed in alphabetical order by product name and are given identifying numbers. Also included is an alphabetical listing of the companies that have products described. This listing cross-references the product list and provides information on the business activity of each firm. In addition, there are three indexes: one a list of firms by states, one that lists the products according to NASA Centers that managed the SBIR projects, and one that lists the products by the relevant Technical Topics utilized in NASA's annual program solicitation under which each SBIR project was selected

    The objectives of 301 projects placed under contract by the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) are described. These projects were selected competitively from among proposals submitted to NASA in response to the 1991 SBIR Program Solicitation. The basic document consists of edited, non-proprietary abstracts of the winning proposals submitted by small businesses. The abstracts are presented under the 15 technical topics within which Phase 1 proposals were solicited. Each project was assigned a sequential identifying number from 001 to 301, in order of its appearance in the body of the report. Appendixes to provide additional information about the SBIR program and permit cross-reference of the 1991 Phase 1 projects by company name, location by state, principal investigator, NASA Field Center responsible for management of each project, and NASA contract number are included
