    Context constraint integration and validation in dynamic web service compositions

    System architectures that cross organisational boundaries are usually implemented based on Web service technologies due to their inherent interoperability benets. With increasing exibility requirements, such as on-demand service provision, a dynamic approach to service architecture focussing on composition at runtime is needed. The possibility of technical faults, but also violations of functional and semantic constraints require a comprehensive notion of context that captures composition-relevant aspects. Context-aware techniques are consequently required to support constraint validation for dynamic service composition. We present techniques to respond to problems occurring during the execution of dynamically composed Web services implemented in WS-BPEL. A notion of context { covering physical and contractual faults and violations { is used to safeguard composed service executions dynamically.     Requirements of the SALTY project

    This document is the first external deliverable of the SALTY project (Self-Adaptive very Large disTributed sYstems), funded by the ANR under contract ANR-09-SEGI-012. It is the result of task 1.1 of the Work Package (WP) 1 : Requirements and Architecture. Its objective is to identify and collect requirements from use cases that are going to be developed in WP 4 (Use cases and Validation). Based on the study and classification of the use cases, requirements against the envisaged framework are then determined and organized in features. These features will aim at guide and control the advances in all work packages of the project. As a start, features are classified, briefly described and related scenarios in the defined use cases are pinpointed. In the following tasks and deliverables, these features will facilitate design by assigning priorities to them and defining success criteria at a finer grain as the project progresses. This report, as the first external document, has no dependency to any other external documents and serves as a reference to future external documents. As it has been built from the use cases studies that have been synthesized in two internal documents of the project, extracts from the two documents are made available as appendices (cf. appen- dices B and C)

    An extended ontology-based context model and manipulation calculus for dynamic web service processes

    Services are oered in an execution context that is determined by how a provider provisions the service and how the user consumes it. The need for more exibility requires the provisioning and consumption aspects to be addressed at runtime. We propose an ontology-based context model providing a framework for service provisioning and consumption aspects and techniques for managing context constraints for Web service processes where dynamic context concerns can be monitored and validated at service process run-time. We discuss the contextualization of dynamically relevant aspects of Web service processes as our main goal, i.e. capture aspects in an extended context model. The technical contributions of this paper are a context model ontology for dynamic service contexts and an operator calculus for integrated and coherent context manipulation, composition and reasoning. The context model ontology formalizes dynamic aspects of Web services and facilitates reasoning. We present the context ontology in terms of four core dimensions - functional, QoS, domain and platform - which are internally interconnected

    Skill-based reconfiguration of industrial mobile robots

    Caused by a rising mass customisation and the high variety of equipment versions, the exibility of manufacturing systems in car productions has to be increased. In addition to a exible handling of production load changes or hardware breakdowns that are established research areas in literature, this thesis presents a skill-based recon guration mechanism for industrial mobile robots to enhance functional recon gurability. The proposed holonic multi-agent system is able to react to functional process changes while missing functionalities are created by self-organisation. Applied to a mobile commissioning system that is provided by AUDI AG, the suggested mechanism is validated in a real-world environment including the on-line veri cation of the recon gured robot functionality in a Validity Check. The present thesis includes an original contribution in three aspects: First, a recon - guration mechanism is presented that reacts in a self-organised way to functional process changes. The application layer of a hardware system converts a semantic description into functional requirements for a new robot skill. The result of this mechanism is the on-line integration of a new functionality into the running process. Second, the proposed system allows maintaining the productivity of the running process and exibly changing the robot hardware through provision of a hardware-abstraction layer. An encapsulated Recon guration Holon dynamically includes the actual con guration each time a recon guration is started. This allows reacting to changed environment settings. As the resulting agent that contains the new functionality, is identical in shape and behaviour to the existing skills, its integration into the running process is conducted without a considerable loss of productivity. Third, the suggested mechanism is composed of a novel agent design that allows implementing self-organisation during the encapsulated recon guration and dependability for standard process executions. The selective assignment of behaviour-based and cognitive agents is the basis for the exibility and e ectiveness of the proposed recon guration mechanism

    Time-bounded distributed QoS-aware service configuration in heterogeneous cooperative environments

    The scarcity and diversity of resources among the devices of heterogeneous computing environments may affect their ability to perform services with specific Quality of Service constraints, particularly in dynamic distributed environments where the characteristics of the computational load cannot always be predicted in advance. Our work addresses this problem by allowing resource constrained devices to cooperate with more powerful neighbour nodes, opportunistically taking advantage of global distributed resources and processing power. Rather than assuming that the dynamic configuration of this cooperative service executes until it computes its optimal output, the paper proposes an anytime approach that has the ability to tradeoff deliberation time for the quality of the solution. Extensive simulations demonstrate that the proposed anytime algorithms are able to quickly find a good initial solution and effectively optimise the rate at which the quality of the current solution improves at each iteration, with an overhead that can be considered negligible

    Self-healing Web service composition with HTN planners

    Web services have become a prominent paradigm for building of both inter and intra-enterprise business processes. These processes are composed from existing Web services based on defined requirements. Standards and techniques have been developed to aid in the dynamic composition of services. However, these approaches are limited when it comes to the handling of unexpected events. This dissertation presents the results of experiments that investigated numerous problems related to Web service composition processes. Based on the investigation, a fault taxonomy was formulated. Faults were grouped into three broad categories, each representing a distinct problem stage. The investigation into faults gave rise to the issue of fault recovery and continued process execution. A list of requirements for self-healing Web service composition was identified, while a new self-healing cycle was exploited based on the MAPE cycle (Monitor, Analyzer, Planner, Executive). The proposed self-healing composition cycle consists of three modules: Plan Generation Module, Plan Execution Module and Failure Analysis Module. The plan execution module, consisting of the execution and run-time monitoring phases, and the failure analysis module, consisting of the analysis and sensemaking phases, were found to be vital to self-healing Web service composition.
