Semantic user profiling techniques for personalised multimedia recommendation
Due to the explosion of news materials available through broadcast and other channels, there is an increasing need for personalised news video retrieval. In this work, we introduce a semantic-based user modelling technique to capture users’ evolving information needs. Our approach exploits implicit user interaction to capture long-term user interests in a profile. The organised interests are used to retrieve and recommend news stories to the users. In this paper, we exploit the Linked Open Data Cloud to identify similar news stories that match the users’ interest. We evaluate various recommendation parameters by introducing a simulation-based evaluation scheme
Training a personal alert system for research information recommendation
Information Systems, and in particular Current Research Information Systems (CRISs), are usually quite difficult to query when looking for specific information, due to the huge amounts of data they contain. To solve this problem, we propose to use a personal search agent that uses fuzzy and rough sets to inform the user about newly available information. Additionally, in order to automate the operation of our solution and to provide it with sufficient information, a document classification module is developed and tested. This module also generates fuzzy relations between research domains that are used by the agent during the mapping process
Automated user modeling for personalized digital libraries

Ontology-based Classification of News in an Electronic Newspaper
This paper deals with the classification of news items in ePaper, a prototype system of a future
personalized newspaper service on a mobile reading device. The ePaper system aggregates news items from
various news providers and delivers to each subscribed user (reader) a personalized electronic newspaper,
utilizing content-based and collaborative filtering methods. The ePaper can also provide users "standard" (i.e., not
personalized) editions of selected newspapers, as well as browsing capabilities in the repository of news items.
This paper concentrates on the automatic classification of incoming news using hierarchical news ontology.
Based on this classification on one hand, and on the users' profiles on the other hand, the personalization engine
of the system is able to provide a personalized paper to each user onto her mobile reading device
User Modeling and User Profiling: A Comprehensive Survey
The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into daily life, particularly
through information retrieval and recommender systems, has necessitated
advanced user modeling and profiling techniques to deliver personalized
experiences. These techniques aim to construct accurate user representations
based on the rich amounts of data generated through interactions with these
systems. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of the current state,
evolution, and future directions of user modeling and profiling research. We
provide a historical overview, tracing the development from early stereotype
models to the latest deep learning techniques, and propose a novel taxonomy
that encompasses all active topics in this research area, including recent
trends. Our survey highlights the paradigm shifts towards more sophisticated
user profiling methods, emphasizing implicit data collection, multi-behavior
modeling, and the integration of graph data structures. We also address the
critical need for privacy-preserving techniques and the push towards
explainability and fairness in user modeling approaches. By examining the
definitions of core terminology, we aim to clarify ambiguities and foster a
clearer understanding of the field by proposing two novel encyclopedic
definitions of the main terms. Furthermore, we explore the application of user
modeling in various domains, such as fake news detection, cybersecurity, and
personalized education. This survey serves as a comprehensive resource for
researchers and practitioners, offering insights into the evolution of user
modeling and profiling and guiding the development of more personalized,

On User Modelling for Personalised News Video Recommendation

Our approach captures users evolving information needs, identifies aspects of their need and recommends relevant news items to the users. CHORUS Deliverable 2.2: Second report - identification of multi-disciplinary key issues for gap analysis toward EU multimedia search engines roadmap
After addressing the state-of-the-art during the first year of Chorus and establishing the existing landscape in
multimedia search engines, we have identified and analyzed gaps within European research effort during our second year.
In this period we focused on three directions, notably technological issues, user-centred issues and use-cases and socio-
economic and legal aspects. These were assessed by two central studies: firstly, a concerted vision of functional breakdown
of generic multimedia search engine, and secondly, a representative use-cases descriptions with the related discussion on
requirement for technological challenges. Both studies have been carried out in cooperation and consultation with the
community at large through EC concertation meetings (multimedia search engines cluster), several meetings with our
Think-Tank, presentations in international conferences, and surveys addressed to EU projects coordinators as well as
National initiatives coordinators. Based on the obtained feedback we identified two types of gaps, namely core
technological gaps that involve research challenges, and “enablers”, which are not necessarily technical research
challenges, but have impact on innovation progress. New socio-economic trends are presented as well as emerging legal
challenges
